As we first previewed at CES back in January of this year, Lenovo has finally unveiled the IdeaPad Yoga, an Ultrabook with a unique hinge design that allows you to fold the screen over in one simple motion to transform your laptop into a tablet. The touch-optimized IdeaPad Yoga 13 and Yoga 11 and clearly targeting consumers who have a tough time deciding whether to buy a laptop or a tablet.

The hinge doesn't rotate a full 360 degrees to put the bottom part flush against the back of the screen, right? Just about a 300-degree hinge to make a stand?

Regardless, the Yoga 13 offers impressive specs for the price. Should make the MacBook Pro 13 sweat. $100 less, yet includes a 1600x900 IPS screen, a touchscreen, and that back-bending hinge?

Lenovo is on fire with their designs! I've loved the Yoga ever since I first laid my eyes on it. I hope Lenovo makes an AMD A10 APU equivalent.

No, I'm pretty sure it's a 360 degree hinge, actually. Let's talk about how much I want an IdeaPad Yoga 11.

    It's a lot.

Having played with them, I can say that these things are pretty awesome.

Yeah, Ars Technica had pictures of it folded fully over. Pretty cool.

I'm very tempted by the 13 inch version as I want something with decent specs and a biggish screen. I'm a bit concerned that it might be a bit chunky in tablet mode but probably would be using it mainly as a notebook as I have a new iPad already. I was hoping my sister could pick one up for me in BB when she visits Chicago on 11/06/12 but am concerned that BB won't have any available in their stores - it's only available for home delivery preorder at the moment.

J.R. - Did you get to try the 13 inch one too? If so what did you think of it?

I know at BBY, at least in Texas, the average store is getting between 3 and 6 units for the launch on the 26th.

If displays can do various contortions then who will be the first to provide a notebook display that I can rotate into the portrait position?

Acer Iconia W700 slate (Ivy Bridge) plus Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard (whose cover forms a tablet stand) and you've got a highly-portable Ivy-Bridge-and-1080p combination where you can type in portrait mode.

If they went 1920x1080 with the display like most of the other i5/i7 tablets/convertables are coming with, I'd be in.

    oh well.

The 900p screen is a surprising let-down, especially considering that for the same price, the Asus TaiChi gives you two separate 1080p screens. Or the Duo 11, despite the Sony name, gives you a 1080p screen for the same price. Etc.

I went to Best Buy today and got to play around with the Yoga 13. The 900p display seemed more than adequate to me and the viewing angles were superb. The display was glossy but very responsive to touch input. The build quailty was pretty good. I wouldn't mind owning one but I would like a stronger discrete gpu. I'm sure the HD4000 should be sufficient for most things except for hardcore 3D stuff.

Yoga? It looks nice already! But if you guys would spare a second looking at this frightening pic.
It looks like the keyboard has become the surface of the notebook itself. if we practice this in a table full of other things like books, pens and all that, or in a soft surface like beds or our laps, would it press the buttons randomly? And if we set up this position frequently, would you guys think it will cause scratches on the keyboard?

I did the same thing today and was ready to find the 1600x900 adequate and have one rung up to take home (they had 10 in stock). Then I kept digging for show stoppers. It was the Realtek wireless. I have and use the Netgear Push2TV HD device so I have to have WiDi support and Intel wireless.

The keys are said to be made of some scratch resistant material or have a scratch resistant coating, and they are ressesed so they don't touch a surface. The keyboard also deacitvates once you rotate it beyond 180 degrees so the keys won't accidentally depress.

The keyboard is recessed so I don't think it would ever touch a flat surface on a desk. If you have crap underneath it or use this device on your lap, sure the keyboard will touch whatevers under it. The keyboard won't register any input when in tablet or tent positions, I'm sure it disables it. Otherwise, that would be a silly move on Lenovo's part. The surface around the keyboard has a rubberized coating which is grippy and I'm sure can handle being placed on a flat sureface. Scratches are bound to happen so what's the point of worrying about this? You could put a placemat or some felt under the Yoga at all times if you want it to remain scratch-free. Or wrap it with something like a silicon skin. Now why would you place any laptop or tablet on a surface with crap all over? Why not clear the crap out of your workspace so you don't even have to worry about this? Seems obvious.

Or you could swap it for an Intel wireless card that supports widi? Or check on lenovo's site to see if its offered with widi as an option and buy that? I'm sure you could pick up the Yoga from Lenovo's Barnes and Noble Gold site and get it cheaper with the extra coupons they offer than buying it from Best Buy. Only downside to ordering online is the wait.

A bit disappointed that Lenovo didn't follow through with a FHD screen (as was mentioned several times during the prototype stage earlier this year). The price point isn't too bad, though, I think: realistically, the Yoga 13 starts at $999, and I'd expect ecoupons to follow that will soon drop the price further.
