Everyone wants a piece of the pie. ;)

What we have enough of are 15.6" screens with 1366x768 resolution.

I really want them to push out a nice 12'' Ultra Portable that is thin and functional, low cost, and good battery life. (Lenovo specifically)

    They have introduced a version of the 13.3" U350 with a 1.3GHz SU4100 Dual-Core processor and 8-cell battery for $649....pretty darn close!

And there's an 11.6" U150 in the pipeline, at least for some markets....

Not bad, but those low resolutions are a no-go on such a large laptop...

The U350, U450 have been out for quite some time now.
The U150 was spotted some weeks ago, and the U550 is new.

Photos of the 11.6" U150 are shown on the Lenovo U.S. website- check out the 'Features', 'Comparison' and 'Gallery' tabs to see more details. LINK

There are also dual-core configurations of the U350 and U450 shown!

I'd like to see the 14"+ ideapads use 46x series gpu's. 110M GT is useless.

The IdeaPad Y450-418966U ($999) specs incorrectly show the nVIDIA GeForce G 110M. It actually has the 512mb GT 130M instead!

A new configuration with Windows 7 is also due to release any day now- the Y450-41896HU with the nVIDIA GeForce GT 240M...

The trend of low res screens in large notebooks really is growing tiresome (as others have pointed out). The problem is, if you slap the "HD" name on the computers, the average consumer will gobble it up.

Yeah notebooks should start offering options of higher screen resolution(let them keep the lower ones for costs, but at least add options for higher ones).

The HD sticker is probably oe of the best working marketing gimmicks for laptops of the current generations lol :p I mean, it works on TVs because honestly, TV resolutions aren't all that important compared to computer resolutions(the main different is image clarity/sharpness for TVs while for computers you get the real estate factor); a 720p TV is fine for lots of people, but a 720p "laptop monitor" = meh for most of us users who know better ;)

If they want these 15.6" to sell, they need to up the resolution to 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

The average consumer, which sadly, makes up the bulk of their profits. I'm sick of it as well.

Slight diversion but as you are clearly opinionated on the subject I'd appreciate your view on my current purchase dilemma, I'm looking at various laptops from 14 to 16 inch - would you consider a 1366 x 768 (WXGA 16-9) screen acceptable on a 14 inch laptop? Seems OK to me given the smaller screen, I personally don't see how "full HD" on this size would be effective. Comments appreciated.

My only quarrel with the wider screens is that they make the laptop bigger!

Or 1600x900 to keep 16:9. Dell and Sony seem to be the only one to have understood that yet.

Yep, 1366x768 on 15 inches is just not good enough.

They will sell just fine . . . let's face it, Best Buy does very well catering to John Q. Consumer.

It is not like low resolutions on large screens are a shocker. The majority of 16:10 15.4" laptops were only 1280x800, which is very similar to its replacement, 1366x768. But wait, the 1366x768 screens are "HD" so that means they are much better! :D

    1280 x 800 is HD though?

I know, it's part of the joke. Manufacturers are really pushing the "HD" tag now with the 16:9 notebooks.

HD sounds so nice for the regular costumer, that they dont know/care about the resolution given, and since WXGA is cheapest of them, there you go.
