Lenovo's IdeaPad U450p is their newest ultra-thin consumer-oriented notebook. With a 14-inch screen and Intel Ultra-Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processor, consumers can expect a mid-sized notebook that maintains a great deal of portability. Does a svelte exterior hamper the performance? Read on and find out.

Who would purchase this? Not many would be safe to say. Lenovo must be paying their bills lol

Lenovo is currently selling it for $749, so $200 off the MSRP. Not the best deal but it is not a bad notebook at all. The purchase decision would of course depend on your uses.

People I see purchasing this: consumers who are looking for a thinner notebook with multimedia features. This would be a pretty decent college notebook. The HDMI port is a plus.

I am currently testing out the U450p's bigger brother, the 15.6-inch U550.

I like the look of this one a lot. I just setup a Dell Inspiron 14z for a friend, and loved the su4100, so im kinda on a kick with these ulv's right now. I figure the su7300 would be slightly better.

I like the thin and light aspect of this guy, the build seems relatively solid, and the keyboard and trackpad sound quite nice. 14" seems perfect imo too. (The more and more i look at the 13.3's...quite popular amoung ulv's...the more i think its a bit too small for every day use. Frankly, i wish we would start seeing ulvs in bigger machines with higher resolutions.)

From the review, the battery life is the only thing that disappoints me, which might be a bit of a deal breaker. Superior battery life is pretty much why u go ulv, imo...if ur down closer to 4 hrs than 6, seems like u should just roll with a new Arrandale.

I've been debating between this guy and a Thinkpad Edge 13. The Edge is suppose to have excellent battery life, but im not crazy about the 13.3 and lack of optical.

    Oh well.

while im here, anyone know of any 14 or 15 inch models outside of lenovo that use ulvs?

off the top of my head...inspiron 14z, Asus UL80

Did the Dell studio 14 and 15 models use ulvs? they dont look to be available on their site anymore.

Check out the Acer Timeline series, they make a full range of CULV from 11.6" - 15.6". They compete head-to-head with Lenovo's U-series.

Also, Dell as you know also sells CULV notebooks; they have a 15.6" version.

I wish there were some CULV notebooks with higher screen resolutions as well . . . 1366x768 is just too low once you go over 13.3"/14". I think 1600x900 should be the minimum for 15.6" screens.

Keep an eye out for the new Core i-series ULV processors like the ones found in the refreshed Alienware M11x.
