Lenovo, the world's second largest PC company, has expanded its IdeaPad product line with the IdeaPad S300, S400, and S405 laptops. These budget-priced thin and light laptops are designed to strike a balance portability, performance and price for consumers who want more computing power than a netbook and longer battery life -- up to five hours -- than a traditional laptop, without the premium price of an Ultrabook.

dear lord, i swear i'm not asking for too much.
lenovo, please, don't do half a job, stick a damned A10 in the AMD powered s405.
the A8 simply isn't good enough as the only option. -
Finally a thin 14" AMD laptop . Sounds really promising with 9mm HDD support and mSata slot for SSD. Backlit-keyboard? What is HD widescreen mean? 720 or 1080p?

I agree the A10 should have been an upgrade option. We're working on a review of a Samsung Series 5 thin and light notebook with an AMD A10 APU and it's a VERY nice system (more details on that soon). I can't speak for Lenovo here, but from my point of view it would have been nice if the S405 came with an A8 at the base configuration and an A10 as an upgrade option.

DANGIT!!!!
I would be all in for one of these if there was an A10 option. -
Screen resolution?

======================================
This Anandtech article reveals a little bit more information not mentioned in some of the other tech sites:
Lenovo Announces New Ideatabs and IdeaPads at IFA
The S405 is very thin. Like the Samsung 5 Series, a soldered APU becomes your only option as the socketed APUs take up more space and most than likely the cooling system couldn't handle a full voltage APU. The quad core A8-4555M (most than likely 25w) is basically the same, CPU-wise, as the A10-4655M. Where it differs is the iGPU. In the S405 it will be paired to a 7450M, i'm guessing to make up for the loss of iGPU performance or lack of crossfire support from the A10? Like I notice before, there isn't a motherboard part number with the A10-4655M + 7450M listed. I too wish Lenovo would at least offer an "HD+" 1600x900 optional display but the "HD" resolution means it'll be 1366x768. I've noticed a poor trend with Lenovo lately. Their consumer IdeaPad notebooks rarely if ever get displays with other than the standard 1366x768 resolutions. It's very sad actually considering I really like the S405. A backlit keyboard would be nice too! C'mon Lenovo, step up your game!
At the bottom of the S405 Hardware Maintenance Manual, under "Parts List" starting at page 60 is where it lists the APUs, motherboards, 7mm HDDs and mSATA SSDs, etc., but no mention of any 9mm 1TB HDD or 32GB mSATA SSD. This is the first time I heard about this (U?)LV BGA A8-4555M & ULV A4-4355M too hence why I was surprised. However, there isn't a motherboard part number with the discrete GPU listed with the A10-4655M . Looks like crossfire will be the name of the game for this s405.
According to the manual, the boards listed with dGPU include:
5 VIUS5 MB DIS 1G A70 A4-4355M HDMI 90000792 N

I'm also still waiting for the Samsung NP535U4C review...
Or... any news about the S405...

Doesn't these compete directly with the HP sleekbooks? Would be nice to see some comparison.

Those two models will definitely compete. I would like to know who's cooling is best. I'm kinda leaning towards the Lenovo but I also feel like the Pavilion Sleekbook will give longer battery life (the 60Whr 4-cell battery in the ENVY Sleekbook was/is long lasting). Most of these thin notebooks get hot from the bottom, its a common complaint.
The 14.0" Samsung NP535U4C with A10-4655M is currently $650 at Amazon. It has an OD drive (SATAII) and a matte display. Battery life is ok. I'd take this over the ENVY Sleekbook.
Supposedly the S405 has mSATA but that has yet to be confirmed and the battery is rather small. I'm wondering whether they'll actually release the A10 version and not just the A4-A8. -
Has anyone bought an S405 yet? I am trying to find some reviews/comments from owners, but no luck so far.
