    Intel Releases Faster 2.10 GHz Pentium M, Prices Dropped on Slower Processors

    Intel today released the latest Pentium M chip in the form of the Pentium M model 765. The Pentium M 765 clocks in at 2.10GHz, contains 2MB cache and a 400MHz system bus. It is part of the latest Intel Pentium M chipset using the "Dothan" core technology.In anticipationof this new chip release Intel earlierin theweek dropped prices on older, more slow Pentium M processors. Thisprice drop will likelylead to lower notebook prices and may have been a contributing factor in allowing Dell to have offered $750 off on notebooks this past Tuesday.


    Intelsaid the new 765processor underpins the worldwide introduction of Centrino systems Wednesday. The chip is priced at $637 apiecewhen purchased in1,000-unit quantities.


    The Pentium M 765 replaces the Pentium M 755 as being the fastest Pentium M on the market. The Pentium M755 has2GHz clock speed and contains 2MB of cache. The 755 model was also priced at $637 per 1000 units, butIntel slashed prices of older Pentium M processors.. The cost of the Pentium M 755 was dropped almost 34 percent, from $637 to $423. The Pentium M 745, which runs at 1.8GHz, was sliced from $423 to $294.


    The price cuts follows a pattern typical of Intel pricing. A faster chip takes on the former price of the processor just below it. These changes and price cutstypically translate to lower notebook prices, which might have something to do with the fact that Dell was able to offer a $750 off deal on Inspiron notebooks on October 20.


    Some market analysts believe that Intel has been recently losing ground in desktop chips to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). However, Intel said in the third quarter it shipped a record number of notebook chips, an area in which AMD is not nearly as strong.

    Well this is certainly interesting. I am new to all of this but am curious as to how often Dell offers deals like the one for $750? I was not able to get the coupon accepted so I missed out on that one. I am wondering if they may be offering something similar in the near future like maybe next week?????

    May have something to do with the fact that they pulled the Inspiron 9100 from production too.
