Intel Netbook Platform Promises 2 sec Boot

Intel is working on a Linux-based mobile platform named Moblin, which they eventually hope has a two-second boot time. Moblin is aimed at Atom-based devices such as netbooks to improve the Linux user experience. Intel's Imhad Sousou, director of the Intel Open Source Technology Center, talked about the company's plans for the platform at the Linux Collaboration Summit in San Francisco.

The Moblin platform is already at the point where the graphics stack takes only a few seconds to start. Sousou said that improving the boot performance will be no easy task.

It'll boot, but I doubt anything will be usable for another 20.

Also, why aren't they trying to innovate "2 second" boots on normal laptops?

    Pretty intense. :D

Just to clarify... he said it would be no easy task, meaning this will take some serious work to pull off?

The average read performance of a hd is at around 50-60MB/s. It might work if the whole system is less than 100MB in size and they remove the whole hardware detection during the boot as pretty much all the computers using atom are clones hardware wise.
As for the "nothing will be usable for 20secs" Linux ain't no windows kid, you can work while the system is launching stuff around without any problem.
This can boot in 5 seconds depending on how fast your system is.

This is only possible if they integrate linux into the bios. It needs to start before "post" in order to achieve 2seconds boot time.

I think 2 second boot is useless. Instead, intel should make the netbook platform be able to wake from standby in 0.5 seconds or something. Right now, my netbook wakes up from standby in 1 second.

I'm not joking 0.5 seconds speed up out of 1 second it takes to wake from standby is 50% improvement. It's not perceptable, but the speed improvement is there.

% is meaningless, especially at such low figures. It's perfect for marketting hypes where the buyer doesn't know any better. You just include the % of increase and omit the real time increase.

that's sequencial read speed, impossible to achieve in real life.
at the very best you'll get 20mb/s.

Under a minute for boot up is fine by me, what frosts my pumpkins is lenghty shutdown/restart times, I think that should be no more than 10-15 seconds tops.
