Intel has announced the fastest Atom processor to date, the Z550 with a 2GHz clockspeed at its Beijing Developer Forum. The Z550 consumes less than 3W of power. The 1.2GHz Z515 was also introduced. Other specifications of the chip, including the Front-Side bus frequency and cache size, were not announced along with pricing.

even at 2.0 i cant see this performing to much better than the 1.66 now.. it will be better but i doubt it will be that big of a jump..

I await the day a netbook can run crysis on high and still maintain a 6+ hour battery life. :D

I await the day that any ultraportable less than 3 pounds can do that.

    I prefer a 1.6ghz dual-core instead of a 2.0ghz single core. Come on Intel!!!!

You can probably run crysis on high with decent playable frame rates at 800x600 with nvidia ion platform.

You can probably run crysis on low with decent playable frame rates at 640/480 with nvidia ion and the current atom platform.

    :p

Good step forward, intel. Now we need the benchmarks.

You can overclock current atoms to that speed. And whats up with releasing a 1.2ghz chip?

2GHz . . . doesn't seem like much of a bump, I doubt it will do anything noticeably better than the 1.66GHz chips we have now.
I think that it may be intended for handheld devices.

These are from the Atom "Silverthorne" family (aka- "Z"-series). A 1.86GHz version, the Z540, has been available from the beginning. The Panasonic Toughbook H1 is the only system that I'm aware of using the Z540.

The Dell Mini 9 and Mini 12 are the only ones using the existing 1.33GHz Z520 and 1.6GHz Z530 (both with a TDP of 2W). The Z540 has a TDP of 2.4W and the Z550 TDP is 3W. Power usage/heat may be one reason the 1.86GHz hasn't been seen in a netbook application....

The intial pricing was $40 for the Z520, $70 for the Z530 and $135 for the Z540. The $65 premium over the Z530 may be another reason we haven't seen the Z540 in any netbooks.
