Intel Atom N280 to Launch this Month
A DigiTimes report states that Intel is moving the launch of its next-generation Atom N280 processor forward to mid-February, up from its originally scheduled second-half '09 launch. The Atom N280 and GN40 chipset combination will sell for US$60-65 (1,000 unit quantities). The Atom processor is a low-wattage, low-power processor used in Netbook computers. Several netbook makers including Asustek are expected to introduce netbooks with the new processor.

The N280 appears to only run at 1.66GHz but I hope the GN40 is a lot better than the nasty inefficient 945GM chipset Intel has used.

It's been discovered that the N280 won't come standard with the GN40 and instead it will be offered as an enhanced high-end option against an N280+945GSE low-end option.

Is this a sign that the Via Nano + Via chipset, being used in the Samsung NC20, is more than a match for the current Intel netbook hardware?

The reports say the N280+GN40 is being put out as an off-map answer to AMD Neo and the Nvidia Ion.
And according to Nvidia the VIA Nano suffers from software issues:

The neo platform is for notebooks that are about 11" - 12" which is a fine screen size. Then it has the power to boot what more could you ask for? -
When combined with Intel's old 945 chipset, the N280 is somewhat faster than the N270, but the difference is marginal.

I would like to see a truly significant increase in the power (not the power consumption) of netbook processors. I think the small format processors and PCs have already begun to revolutionize day-to-day computing. True portability without the downside of over-miniaturization of human interfaces (the problem with Blackberry "keyboards", etc.), is the new paradigm.

Il like his honesty. He doesn't seem very bias at all about what he has to say, but I'd expect Via to be down with their software. And why not an Ion equivalent for Via CPUs? Apparently Intel doesn't want to lose out on their crappy GMAs and I guess Via wouldn't want to lose out on their S3 Chrome series GPUs.
