Intel Atom N280 processor coming in Q2/Q3

A faster and more expensive Intel Atom processor will be arriving in Q2/Q3 this year, to be available in 10-inch netbooks from Asustek, Acer, and Gigabyte. The Atom N280 has a 1.66GHz clockspeed and 667MHz FSB, and will make use of Intel's GN40 chipset. The N280 will go for $60-65 in thousand-unit quantities; the current N270 and 945GSE chipset goes for $46.

Good to hear. All comes down to what the GN40 is capable of though.

So far Intel's integrated is still behind the 9400 found in the Ion chipset even if they surprise us all and include a 4500. Considering the crappy 950 available now I wouldn't doubt if they cheap out again and include a 3100 which would be even worse but so far its all speculation.

Correct me if I'm wrong (i verywell might be)
But if the processors FSB increases to 667 mhz, doesn't that mean that the ram can also go at 667 mhz?
(instead of the current 533 mhz)

Most likely but I don't think it has to, if that makes sense :) I don't know too much about platforms but in the case of my processor it has an 800mhz fsb but my motherboard only supports 667 ram.

I won't pretend to know anything about netbook hardware, but I notice that mfgrs like to use old chipsets in them. Given that, would it not be cheaper to use an old low-power cpu (like an Intel U7500 or something) in them? It would be more powerful than current offerings and eliminate R&D costs because they are "legacy" components. Just a thought......

    :)

A U7500 uses 4 times as much power as an Atom N270, and costs like half the price of a netbook, so its not gonna happen.

the thing with the nvidia ion though is they say the ion + 9400 is gonna cost $500....hell no that plus the cost of a netbook you are looking at $800+ for a netbook you can get a really decent notebook for that price if we can see ion + 9400 in a netbook for about $600 that would be fine.

They're saying $500 for the complete Nvidia Ion nettop PC...that little one they keep showing that fits in the palm of your hand.

For netbooks the Nvidia Ion platform should only cost "at most" $50 more than a comparable netbook equiped with the standard 945GSE chipset.

All the important stuff that's inside the Ion box will be in a netbook but just not in that exact shape. Expect netbook manufacturers to only use one type of display port and at most half of the usb ports.

Those Ion boxes though are great as nettops and I'd love to buy one for every TV in my house.
