    IBM Recalls 553,000 Power Adapters Worldwide due to Overheating Issues

    IBM announced a recall on a 56-watt adapter that it shipped with ThinkPad notebooks between January 1999 and August 2000. These adapters shipped with the IBM ThinkPad i Series notebooks, the ThinkPad 390 and 240 series, and a limited number of ThinkPad s Series notebooks sold in Asia. Look for the part number 02K6549 on your AC adapter to see if you have a faulty device (see image below). The power adapter was manufactured by Delta Electronics Inc. and this adapter could have been bought as an accessory as well, so if you purchased your laptop outside of the given dates but did purchase a power adapter as an accessory during this time then you might also be affected.


    The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that the adapter made by Delta Electronics can overheat and cause damage to the laptop circuit board, in addition to even melting through the case of the laptop. Six reports ofthis type of incident occurred. Nobody has been reported injured by this adapter.
