Nice! HDD progress stagnated last year while the manufacturers debugged PMR but now they are moving forward again. And it seems they have stopped announcing products months ahead of manufacture.

Personally, I would prefer the Samsung 250GB 5400rpm drive rather than 200GB 7200prm.

I find the 5400rpm drives give decent performance/size/value. i wouldnt spend more or the same for a 7200rpm drive that is 50GB less than an 5400 drive.

though i wonder how far theyd take the 2.5" drives before the SSD drives become the norm or at least reach reasonably good size/price

I'd take one, as it would be a rather large upgrade from my 120gb 5400 Samsung. Whether a 200gb drive would actually be recognized by an HP V5000 is a whole 'nother story. ;)

Did anyone catch an actual release date in that article or is the drive available now?

Either way, great link and thanks for posting. I may get one of these for my next notebook; $249 is expensive but not unreasonable in my opinion. I paid close to $200 for my 100GB 7200RPM 2.5" SATA drive.

What's the difference between the 7k200 and the E7k200? And does encryption affect performance at all?

The E7k200 sounds like it is geared for blade server use.

Yes. It uses much more power, and supposedly lasts longer. Forget about it for laptop use. 7K200 is what you want for your laptop.

    Looks like a fast beast.

I am looking for real life tests of power consumption and noise...

Those drives have been available for at least a few weeks now. Most of the Clevo notebook resellers are offering them. I have 3 in my D901C.
