The model look very similar to dv4000z series but the CPU is Turion/Sempron instead of Pentium-M. however, HP does not have an X700 option for dv5000z is a very big pain.

As far as I saw, the main disadvantage of dv5000z is hp still does not offer the MT but offer only ML... maybe HP does not have a plan to sell MT until they have low number of ML cpu first.

Anyway, at this moment.. Yonah is talk of the town already. So, the oldie Turion with new dress would not make me feel excite much.

I wonder why HP offer Turion cpu but arms with only low-end graphic card. (dv5000, dv8000..) So, if I would like to play games.. I have to choose dv4000 which have X700 only ??

Indeed, why must HP/Compaq keep crippling their machines with the most powerful processors with the the weakest GPUs? x200Ms on all the AMD-powered models, and only a measly x600 on that 10 pound, P4HT beastie the zd8000? It makes no sense whatsoever.

And this is why Dell continues to outsell HP by leaps and bounds.

With the low-end graphics card. . . that is a shame. This could have been an excellent gaming notebook, a nice alternative to the dv4000 with an X700 card.

Agreed, it doesn't make any sense.

Other than the graphics card, I like the design of the notebook as a whole. HP has always had very well designed laptops in my opinion. :)

Next from HP, a 14" Wide AMD. Hey Compaq, already has it.

I think they are going by demand. % wise I do not think they will be selling too many with X700 or something like that. Many people(including me) does not care much about GPU.

Yeah, but it'd be a nice option. The HP dv4000 sold like hot cakes once it had the X700 GPU in it.

It's a real pity it lacks an x700. A 5400RPM 100GB hard drive option would've been nice, too. It was the latter that really prevented me from buying the dv4000, which is a very impressive system as far as I can tell.

Yes - HP does have an annoying habit of underpowering their notebooks. I have no idea why they would do this - they'd make tons of money if they just put a decent GPU in all of their notebooks.

Notice that they especially give crippling GPUs to their AMD notebooks, like the ZV6000 and DV5000Z, GET WITH THE PROGRAM HP!!!!!!!!!

Can't all of us on this forum make a petition to HP? They'd have to listen wouldn't they?

I for one am okay with the crippled graphics. I mean, as long as it keep costs down for the average (that is, non-gamer or people like me who only play games like Sims 2), why not?

This is probably a stupid question...but is there a big difference between AMD processors and Intel where battery life is concerned? As someone who doesn't do anything that requires much GPU power in the realm of gaming, I'm intrigued by this model, but if it's gonna take a hit on battery...

No, there isn't a big difference in battery life between AMD Turion CPUs and Intel P-M CPUs.

i just ordered an dv5000z a couple days ago, and should be getting it in about a week...these are the specs

    – Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional with SP2
    – AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-40 (2.2GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
    – 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    – 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    – 2.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x1024MB)
    – 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    – LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
    – Sonic DigitalMedia Deluxe-Burn/Copy, Label CD/DVDs
    – 54g(TM) 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
    – 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

what i would like to know is, after reviewing all these negative comments about the game card, will work good for the sims 2? thats really the only high performance game i play, second would be law and order:criminal intent.

im pretty sure either way ill be satisfied with it either way...since all i have to settle for now is a 6 year old desktop that cant even play most of games today and a laptop with a 645MHz processor that i can barely play the sims 2 on

    Dear notebook Gurus!

I am under the impression that HP dv5000z is the only 64-bit CPU based notebook introduced at CES 2006. Am I missing something? Is there anything from Acer, ASUS or any other reputable manufacturer?
Is anybody aware of any upcoming (in the next couple of months) models? Please advise at your earliest opportunity! I need your help badly indeed…

    :)

Just ordered a dv5000z with 256MB of RAM...

Want to buy a 1GB DIMM after the fact, but I cant seem to find what exact kind of RAM is in this laptop.

Can someone either tell me what is in this laptop, or point me to a place to purchase it (cheaply) :)

    TIA!
