HP has launched updates to its current consumer notebook line by incorporating the new Intel Santa Rosa platform. The dv2500t, dv6500t and dv9500t will update the dv2000t, dv6000t and dv9000t respectively.

HP Pavilion dv2500t

The dv2500t, like the dv2000t, is a 14.1" widescreen notebook with BrightView. Following are the basic specs of the dv2500t:

• Processor: Intel Centrino Duo (Core 2 Duo)
• Memory: Up to 2GB Ram
• Graphics: Intel X3100 or NVIDIA 8400M
• OS: Windows Vista
• Optical Drive: 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive OR, Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support (s) OR, LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with double layer support
• Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection OR, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection & Bluetooth TM, Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection & Bluetooth TM
• Ports: 3 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 2 Headphone out, 1 microphone-in, 1 VGA (15-pin), 1 TV-Out (S-video), 1 RJ-11 (modem), 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 notebook expansion port 3, 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin), 1 Consumer IR
• Optional built-in web camera
• "Trace" Imprint finish
• Weight: 5.8lbs
• Dimensions: 13.15" (L) x 9.33" (W) x 1.02" (min H)/1.54" (max H)

The dv2500t is mostly unchanged from the HP dv2000t design wise, although the imprint finish is now changed slightly to what HP is calling "Trace" Imprint finish. According to HP the “Trace” Imprint pattern with show subtle lines radiating from organic circles across the surface of the notebook hinting at the interconnectedness of life in the digital universe. Very Zen sounding. It makes sense that HP is launching this notebook in Shanghai China.

Pricing will start at $999 for the dv2500t.

HP Pavilion dv6500t

The dv6500t updates the hugely popular HP dv6000t (that's been the most popular site on this site for several months now). Like the dv6000t, the dv6500t has a 15.4" BrightView display. The dv6500t also adopts the new "Trace" imprint finish the dv2500t has, in the image above you can see the closeup of this design. Following are the basic specs of the dv6500t:

• Processor: Intel Centrino Duo (Core 2 Duo)
• Screen:15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
• Memory: Up to 2GB Ram
• OS: Windows Vista
• Graphics: Intel X3100 or NVIDIA 8400M
• Optical Drive: 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive OR, Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support (s) OR, LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with double layer support
• Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection OR, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection & Bluetooth TM, Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection & Bluetooth TM
• Ports: 3 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 2 Headphone out, 1 microphone-in, 1 VGA (15-pin), 1 TV-Out (S-video), 1 RJ-11 (modem), 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 notebook expansion port 3, 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin), 1 Consumer IR
• Optional built-in web camera
• "Trace" Imprint finish
• Weight: 6.14 lbs
• Dimensions: 14.05" (L) X 10.12" (W) X 1" (MIN H)/1.69" (MAX H)

The dv6500t is again mostly unchanged from the HP dv6000t design wise, outside of the new Imprint "Trace" design. The big story here is the updated processor from Intel which will provide improved performance.

HP Pavilion dv9500t

The HP dv9500t is a 17" widescreen notebook, and would be the biggest Pavilion if it weren't for the giant 20" screen HP HDX. The HP dv9500t updates the dv9000t with the Intel Santa Rosa platform and has the new "Trace" Imprint design.

You can see that the dv9500t offers a number pad to the right thanks to the increased real estate that comes with a 17" screen notebook. Following are the basic specs of the dv9500t:

• Processor: Intel Centrino Duo (Core 2 Duo)
• Screen: 17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440x900) OR 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
• Memory: Up to 2GB Ram
• OS: Windows Vista
• Graphics: Intel X3100, NVIDIA 8400M or NVIDIA 8600M
• Optical Drive: 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive OR, Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support (s) OR, LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with double layer support, HD-DVD drive
• Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection OR, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection & Bluetooth TM, Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection & Bluetooth TM
• Ports: 4 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 2 Headphone out, 1 microphone-in, 1 VGA (15-pin), 1 TV-Out (S-video), 1 RJ-11 (modem), 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 notebook expansion port 3, 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin), 1 Consumer IR
• Optional built-in web camera
• "Trace" Imprint finish
• Weight: 7.7 lbs
• Dimensions: 15.16 (L) x 11.65" (W) x 1.57" (H) (approx.)

The dv9500t will make quite a multimedia/gaming notebook if you were to configure with the HD-DVD drive and the NVIDIA 8600GM graphics card capable of running DX 10 graphics.

Conclusion

Availability of these notebooks is set for May 9th, with the exception of the HDX which should be available this summer. Following is a breakdown on pricing:

• HP Pavilion HDX Series Entertainment Notebook PC starts at $2,999 and is planned to be available for purchase this summer.
• HP Pavilion dv2500 Series Entertainment Notebook PC start at $999.
• HP Pavilion dv6500 Series Entertainment Notebook PC starts at $949.
• HP Pavilion dv9500 Series Entertainment Notebook PC starts at $1,199

The launch event will be taking place in Shanghai China for these notebooks. And guess what? HP beat Dell to the punch in getting Santa Rosa out in consumer laptops. Another score to the HP corner!

Just noticed this:

Screen:17" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)

17" + WXGA = Ick.

Way to go HP for announcing these early. I really like the specifications of the dv2500t, mainly because of the Nvidia 8400M graphics card. That's a considerable upgrade from the Go7200 the dv2000t has now, which is very low end.

I'm thinking the HP dv9500t will have a WXGA+ (1440x900) resolution and not a WXGA but I could be wrong.

I agree.

It'll help sales of the dv2500t, I'm sure.

:)

I hope so, for HP's sake.

I doubt most people want big screens with low resolutions.

interesting. i think nand memory was one of the main reasons some were holding out for santa rosa, but it only seems to be on certain models.

also, seems like the business notebook specs that were posted yesterday were not accurate, according to those datasheets.

I love the looks of these, very impressive. These prices are much cheaper than I thought too. If my budget is around $1200, you think I should just try to customize one of these? Also is it true that the gma x3100 can play modern games like counter-strike well?

I don't think that anyone makes a 17" WXGA screen, the lowest they go is WXGA+. Its a pretty comfortable resolution, but I think WSXGA will be better.

The Go8400 on the dv2500t is excellent, just excellent. Makes it a very nice choice for those looking at a budget thin and light with dedicated graphics (this should offer the same performance as the 7600, right? Thats awesome). A very nice upgrade from the Go7200, which was a step in the right direction. I wonder how battery life will be affected by this though, the dv2000 with the Go7200 wasn't doing all that well in terms of this.

Best move was the option of the 8400M on the dv2500 series.

what notebooks will have Robson in them? I was really looking forward to getting a laptop with either 1GB or 512MB of NAND flash, but I've yet to see any laptops with it. Like everyone else, just how powerful is the 8400M Andrew?

WXGA is a resolution of 1280x800 or 1280×720, and WXGA+ is a resolution of 1440×900.

Umm, not really. Zen is the Japanese word for that well-known branch of Buddhism. If you wanted to draw a more proper parallel, you'd say "Very Chan sounding".

With Santa Rosa, Napa, and Sonoma, has anyone ever done the obvious and launched their new product line-up in wine country? Even those nasty white bumpers would look a heck of a lot sexier after a couple bottles of Cabernet.

Slightly weaker. 8400M scores a 1500, Go 7600 scores a 2000 in 3DMark06.

Just noticed this from the HP site:

DETAILS!

1. All the consumer Pavilions now have a fingerprint reader!

2. The dv6500t now has an HDMI/u-DVI port!

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...e&v1=Entertainment&series_name=dv6500t_series

See the "left-side" picture view, and zoom in. You'll see an HDMI port.

Andrew, you may want to add those details onto your post.

The Geforce 8400M isn't available yet, HP is only offering the X3100

I have also been on www.hpshopping.com and they do have the DV2500 for sale from $999 but it only comes with X3100.

The fingerprint reader is an optional extra ($25), as is 2GB DDR2 ($125), and also a 120 GB hardrive ($50)

It looks like the older dv2000/6000/9000t may be hanging around for a while, although I did notice that the ship dates are longer than the new ones by a few days.

once again, HP fails it. I was really hoping that with the release of these new notebook,s Vista x64 bit would be offered in other flavors besides Ultimate and not be relegated to only the 9000 series. When will HP figure it out that we want g4 bit OS in other sizes than 17 inch and we want it in other flavors than Ultimate. It is dumb that they provide all the 64-bit drivers, but then wont install 64-bit OS from the factory.

As per the CNet review ... and HP Website.. heres what I've found out...

1) No dedicated Graphics Card - The Intel one uses 358 Mb shared memory. So better prepare to have the 2GB Memory option otherwise Vista will bring the machine down in a few days. I presume the card is not very capable of heavy gaming too.

2) No 7200 rpm HDD - On a desktop replacement I dont want to use a 5400 rpm or 4200 rpm HDD. Come on HP !! These days you get huge external drives. Atleast give the option of 7200 rpm drives.

3) Webcam ?? - The CNet review the megapixels have been given up. By how much ? Any specs for that ? Is VGA going to be better ?

4) dv9500t performs marginally poorer thatn dv9000z - Are we upgrading technology or degrading ? Is Santa Rossa just something bloated ? will it only improve battery life ?

I also was hoping that Ultimate would be offered on the 14.1 or 15.4-inch models. I guess I'll have to try the Windows Anytime Upgrade when I order the new laptop.

I'm glad to see they are offering the TV tuner on the 14.1 inch model.

For those of us who cannot wait a month for the 8400M video card to come out and are casual gamers (counter-strike), should we spring for the HP dv6000t or the dv6500t? I know that the dv6500t has santa rosa but I want the best video card available to me. Which video card is better, the GeForce(R) Go 7400 on the dv6000t or the Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 on the dv6500t? Or are they both mediocre? Hopefully the 8400M will come out sooner than a month so I can get it. Thanks.

I haven't see exact specs on the new video cards, but the integrated ones usually are not as powerful as a dedicated one. With that said, to answer your question about which is best, it'll probably be like this...

8400 > 7400 > x3100

I'm bummed about not being offered the nvidia graphics either. I dont think I can wait a month since I need it soon. Any chance if I buy one now with the intel option I can upgrade to the nvidia option later? Or should I cancel my order?

I just placed an order for:

dv6500t
vista home premium
15.4" (1280x800) brightview
intel x3100 graphics
mic+webcam
2gb ram
120gb hd
lightscribe
802.11n with bluetooth
high capacity 6-cell
core2 duo 7300 (2.0ghz/4mb l2cache) cpu

The Go7400 is a far superior card if you plan to game. The Intel X3100 is an integrated card and it's not designed for games.

Thanks for the specifications of the 8400M variants Xstation; I wasn't aware that it had a 64-bit memory interface on the two lower-end models. If the card has fast memory then it should be able to compensate for that like the Go7400 does.

Oh well they are saying it will be built by May 14 and then I have 21 days after I receive it to return it for full refund so if in that time the one with the nvidia graphix comes out, I can return this one as long as I dont open it :)

Another question. Other than the size of the screens (14.1" vs. 15.4"), what are the main differences between the dv2500t and the dv6500t? It seems like they have the same specs when configured. Am I missing something? (Yes, I probably am)

Glickman: i think the only main difference is the screen size and weight of the laptop (possibly thickness). The 6500 has the 15.4" widescreen and the 2500 has the 14.1" both have the same resolution so it all depends on if you like stuff smaller or bigger and do you want to save weight for the smaller size. I looked at it in the store and I think I felt 1280x800 on a 14" widescreen seemed too small for me. But I may change my mind yet.

Check the return policy on the HP site, but I'm pretty sure returning it has nothing to do with if you open it.

Any estimates or rumors other than "in a month" on when the 8400M video card becomes available?

i actually went to HP site and configured a dv2500t and it's really under $1,399 ! :D
I would probably give another $200-300 on a 8600 GPU !

The new HP laptops come with 5400 / 4200 rpm HDDs. Is it possile to buy a 7200 RPM SATA from NewEgg.com and install it into the laptop ?

That's quite sad that they don't come with 7200rpm hard drives... brand new notebooks and they don't. 4200? What a joke... 5400? Slow... but acceptable if you don't load... much. 7200 is a minimum standard these days, even for notebooks. No excuse to squeeze out 15 more minutes of life to mess with your performance that badly :(. Gar....
