It looks allright, but im curious to see if the Altec Lansing offers better sound that the other 11" notebooks out there.
Will you guys do a review of this in the future?

Not bad, wish it came with a dual core standard

The unit definitely looks appealing in that it offers the higher resolution screen as well as dual core + discrete graphics. However, there is that lingering AMD/ATI that I have never come to particularly like. Regardless though, if it lives up to its claimed 7 hours on the 6 cell and the fact that it also has SSD as an option, could be quite a great ultraportable. I just need to now get a job that is mobile enough to require the use of such a machine :)

I've been waiting for HP to come out with something better than their mini series. I've configured a Dell and it comes out to around $700, so I guess this would also. I'm not crazy about AMD processors and really wanted an Intel instead, but the regular laptop I use at home is just an HP G60 with the AMD Turion X2 with a whopping 2 hrs battery life. That said, on full power plugged in the computer does what I ask. No games, just surfing and word processing.

So, what would be a better purchase do you think: HP dm1z, Dell 11z, or the nicely configured Acer Timeline 1830t?

There is no higher res or discrete graphics option that I am seeing

What are you referring to? I am just talking about how I appreciate that the screen used for this model is among the higher resolution (1366x768), instead of the 1024x800 normally seen on screens of this size. And having discrete graphics is always a plus. I think the highest resolution screen for the smaller netbooks that I have seen is 1440x900 on a Thinkpad X301.

1366x768 is pretty standard for 11-12'' notebooks nowadays and the ATI4225 is integrated.

I have a computer similar to the DM1z. My specs are in my sig.

I think you guys are underrating how much AMD has been improving, especially with the Neo lineup. I have the older generation of Neo processors and with this laptop at %50 brightness, undervolted (easy procedure), Wifi on, bluetooth off, I get about 4.5-5 hours of battery life on a single charge. That is pretty damn good for how cheap and powerful this laptop is compared to other notebooks. Not as impressive as Intel's CULV platform, but it holds it's own when it comes to performance and beats it out with graphics performance, and it was $100 cheaper at the time.

For something that's only 1 inch wider and 1/2 lb more than a netbook, the dm1z makes a great alternative. The keyboard on this is just amazing, and I can see getting a lot of productivity done. I love the champagne color, and with the price starting at around $500 it has to make me seriously think if going for a high-end netbook like the 5102 is even worth it anymore.

Perhaps the real feat of genius would be if HP were to squeeze this into a 10" form factor. If netbooks in 2-3 years can do what the dm1z does, and I'm thinking they will, mobile computing will start to take on a whole new meaning.

Considering that I like netbooks so much, the fact that the dm1z has got me this interested says a lot for this ultra portable.

I am about to purchase one of these in lieu of a netbook to take on a trip to Europe. I am not sure about which processor to select. I see K625 mentioned in this forum a few times but none other mentioned. Does that mean only a K625 should be considered?

I would go for the K625 if you can afford it; it is a dual-core processor and will be noticeably faster than the base K125, even in general use.

Is there any chance NBR will do a review of the DM1Z?

Wait til sandybridge comes out ... every ultralight will have an integreated GPU as powerful as a NVIDIA 310M. Then the DM1 will perform as well as a UL30VT.

I just pulled the trigger yesterday and ordered a dm1z. But I made a mistake and ordered it with the k125. I called HP and tried to get them to adjust the order but they said it was too late. I bought it with a 25 dollar coupon and HP offered me another 20 dollars off if I keep the order. My logic is that the k125 would have better battery life but from what I have read, the k325 is about the same. For my needs, I thing the k125 will be good enough. If I change my order now, it would cost nearly 75 dollars to upgrade to the k325 since they will not let me reuse that coupon and the extra 20 dollars plus the cost of the upgrade.. So I'm going to wait and see.

Hopefully next week I can post some pic's and give my general consensus of how I feel the K125 fairs. At any rate, Its a really good deal since I only paid 425 total and with the 7200 rpm HD and 3 gigs of ram HP is throwing in, its definitely the best value 11.6 notebook/netbook on the market. If you search, there are some sites that have posted benchmarks for all three neo processors. By looking at those numbers, I have a feeling I made a mistake going with the k125. But in real world use, I probably will be happy with what is coming.

From what I have read, everyone says the sound is really clear and loud on the dm1z. Dells 101z also has good sound but they don't have any way to upgrade the HD.. which is bogus. And upgrading to 7200 rpm and more memory costs allot more then what I paid for the HP. Every time I research to buy a notebook, I always end up with HP since they always offer more for the money. And having access to the HD and memory is mandatory in my book. What was dell thinking?

I've had my eyes on the Lenovo X100e, but HP is using the current generation processors with their DM1z and it's had me considering it.
I will definitely read your review when you post it! :)

This is exactly right. I just bought an HP Envy 17, to which I upgraded from a dv6000. I was committed to getting a Vaio or MacBook Pro. Once I did my research, I found myself back with HP. This is my third-consecutive HP laptop. I previously would not have described myself as brand-loyal, but I guess that is becoming hard to dispute.

from my experience with the dv2, I completely agree on this point!!

Without the dual core, even general tasks seem limited by the CPU :( [which is already rather lowly clocked to begin with]

Yeah, this is worrying me. But on the other hand, most of the reviews I have read with the newer neo based dm1z is pretty good. Looking back on dv2 reviews most people say is was only barely capable of 720P whereas the newer dm1z can do 1080P.. except for flash based 1080P. Also, the dv2 seemed to suffer more heat related issues, whereas the newer dm1z is only hot out of the vents. The few reviews I have read concerning the dm1z and the k125 is that under windows seven, its multitasks fairly well for most peoples needs.

I think the biggest issue for the dv2 was that it shipped with vista with allot of bloatware on top of that. With the original configuration, the dv2 ran poorly. But those that installed it on seven said it ran much better, however I am unsure if all the windows seven drivers ever caught up with that model. Based on all the new dm1z reviews and the older dv2 reviews I can assume its unfair to say the dm1z will suffer from the poor performance issues of the single core as much as the dv2 did. I'm sure the core 2 will definitely fair better. However, I don't think it will have the systemic issues that the dv2 had, (poor performance, weak video playback and heat).

I'm also thinking that the newer neo 1.7 will generally perform better then amd's older gen 1.6. At any rate, I should know more next week when I get my new dm1z. Considering that I only paid 425 total.. which includes tax and has 3 gigs of ram and a 7200 rpm HD, I'm thinking that its going to be decent enough for my needs at that price point.

I just bought a used dell 630m on ebay with a single core 1.8 with XP Pro on it. If it runs as fast as that, I will be happy. I'd probably just use the dell but I bought it as a gift for a niece in the Fiji islands where laptops are really expensive.

I'm trying to decide between the hp dmz1 and the asus 1215n. I've read good and bad things about both. Can anyone offer a comparison? I just need a reliable laptop that is no more than $550 and that is between 11.5-13.5 inch display as I travel a lot. I'm not a gamer so it doesn't need to be too fancy. HI desertNM how did you get such a good deal on your dm1? 425 seems like a rather low price. any help would be appreciated.

I would take a look at the Acer 1551. K325 Neo processor and integrated HD 4225 graphics. Logicbuy has them on sale for $295.99. That is a really nice price.

This segment is becoming more and more appealing to me by the day. Im hoping that the APU thing pans out, but if not one of these type of dual core laptops with a battery bigger then a 6 cell would be a good substitute.

If you search around, there are lots of sites that show the 25 dollar coupon.. I used Instant discounts:
$100.00 Laptop instant rebate On HP site
    $25.00 Coupon LOGICBUY25 $100 off + coupon HP Pavilion dm1z 11.6-inch Laptop | HP dm1 video and reviews - LogicBUY

I wanted to upgrade my processor and they told me I could not modify order and offered an additional 20 dollars off.. so that's how I got that number.

UPDATE.. received dm1z today and it had a warped door covering HD/memory slots. Door had screws on one side and it was not even seated at all on other end.. just loose. The internals were bulging out of the bottom like they had reworked it and couldn't get it flush again.. I unscrewed the door, reseated the tabs and put the door on.. but it had a huge bulge and you could see the guts of the machine from the side.. it was without a doubt, the worst visual defect I have even seen on a notebook and they knew what they were doing when they assembled that mess. And they did not even QC.. since any causal QC would have spotted that defect from across the room.

After many failed attempts calling HP I finally reached a gal that got a supervisor to finally agree to re ship the dm1z to me with the upgraded k350 processor that I wanted. And they finally agreed to keep my initial 25 dollar coupon and the additional 20 off they promised. I will pay only 20 dollars more for the upgraded processor. I need this for a trip in two weeks and if they don't get it to me by then, it goes back to HP.

But the machine really looks nice. I was too depressed to turn it on.. the battery would not even fit right in the back.. I just boxed it up and fed ex will pick up tomorrow.
