Not to be outdone by Apple, HP Today decided to throw their own little unveiling party in Berlin, Germany. HP took the opportunity to announce no less than seventeen new notebooks and declare their continued dominance in the mobile market space. Here we cover the Pavilion consumer notebooks that were released to the world via Europe:
HP Pavilion tx2500z
(view large image)An update to the tx2000z convertible tablet PC was announced. Not too much different from the tx2000z exists here outside of a processor bump and upgrade to the availability of ATI HD 3200 graphics. The tx2500z of course has both touch and pen enabled screen technology. We're a little sad to see there's still no Intel processor option for this machine.
For full specs, just check out the data sheet here:
HP Pavilion dv7t Entertainment Notebook
(view large image)The HP dv7t is an update to the Pavilion dv9700t, it's a pure desktop/entertainment play. Following is a quick run down on some of the features of this notebook:
- Play Blu-ray movies using the optional built-in Blu-ray drive.
- Make a statement with a streamlined design wrapped in onyx and chrome HP Imprint finish.
- Experience the evolution of award-winning HP Imprint finish now in metallics with matching input devices providing great durability.
- Get a clean frameless look with the optional 17.0" diagonal HP BrightView Infinity display.
- Experience premium audio with built-in HP Triple Bass Subwoofer.
- Expand your storage and back up your data using optional dual hard drives.
- Create personalized, silkscreen-quality DVD and CD labels with optional LightScribe.
- Chat face-to-face or capture video clips using the HP Webcam and integrated microphone.
- Simplify your password management with the optional integrated fingerprint reader.
The dv7t series Mesh Imprint features a grid-like pattern for subtle contrast to the liquid appearance of the metallic finish. The streamlined look is enhanced with a color-matched keyboard and touchpad. And touch media controls light up and become visible only when the system is powered on further enhancing the clean appearance.
Specs wise HP is being a little vague about this machine. In the data sheet they provided all they claim is to have an "Nvidia GeForce GS & GT graphics available". You can be fairly certain it will be a middle of the road graphics card as the high-end graphics are the realm of Voodoo now. The Intel processor will be Montevina, but again, HP hasn't exactly said which processors from that family will be available -- mostly because Intel hasn't officially released Montevina yet due to a delay.
HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment notebook
(view large image)The Pavilion dv5t updates the the existing Pavilion dv6700t. Nice to see that HP has gone back to using the number five to represent 15.4" screen. The dv5t will be based on the new Intel Montevina platform, graphics available will be either Nvidia dedicated or Intel X5400 integrated graphics (part of the new platform). Design wise the dv5t has been updatd with a new Imprint 2onyx and chrome finish. Blu-Ray is part of the mix too.
HP Pavilion dv4t Entertainment notebook
(view large image)You get the pattern by now. The 4 in the dv4t stands for 14.1" display and this new guy replaces the Pavilion dv2700t. Interesting to see that HP didn't cave into the popular 13.3" display size, and kind of a shame they didn't actually. Either way, this is the portable play in the new Pavilion lineup. The Montevina platform is of course present and Blu-Ray is also an option even on this little guy. The dv4t also has the HP Imprint 2 finish in onyx and chrome.
Compaq Presario CQ50Z
(view large image)How about that model name for a mouthful? Yes, the Compaq consumer line lives on in the form of a rather bland looking 15.4" screen AMD Athlon/Sempron based budget mainstream CQ50Z notebook. The graphics come in the form of an Nvidia 8200M card.

Thanks for the news. Though im not too impressed with the new releases.
Looks like they just changed the shell and design. No imprints either, which made HP special. -
Oh my, that is a lot of bling... I think I prefer the current design.
-
The 14" still weighs 5.4lbs =/
-
Hey! That's a Toshiba!
-
YES!!! finally! now its time to start looking for a notebook!
-
its an unfortunate fate that these laptops are bound to have all that crapware installed.
design wise i like the cleaner look. -
I think you got the 15 inch and 14 inch picture switched, looking at from size of the notebooks
-
Will these laptops be configurable after the July 17th Monevina releace?
-
When are these supposed to hit the USA?
-
It's probably just me, but I'm not a fan of the exactly center-positioned touchpad for the dv5t and below...
-
Its designed for ambidextrous use even though most people can use either hand to use the trackpad.
They added lots of more bling. Hopefully the chrome doesnt flake away after a few months -
Still no gbEthernet or 1440x900 on the dv4t and looks like basic graphics.
:-(
Still waiting. Hopefully Dell will bring something new out soon with greater options. -
The new DV lines look bulkier than the current ones. I think I still like current design more.
-
-
-
If you put this next to Dell's XPS, it really makes the XPS looks cheap and bland (it's really not, but Dell's finishing is nothing compared to HP). -
Dang, I was really hoping they'd have a 13.3" laptop -- like the dv3000 in Asia. I may be going Dell next go-around.
-
I guess HP thought it was time for a re-design after 2 years. I for one like the design of HP's current lineup better though.

Woohoo! It looks like the 15 inch is finally available with a higher screen resolution than 1280x800. This pic looks like 1680x1050. -
i take it there's not gonna be any back lighting on the keyboard huh? either way it looks like i'm holding out for the back to school sales this fall.
-
Any HDX news over there in Berlin?
-
there's somethan fishy about those specs. the 15 and 17 inch both weigh 5.48 lbs. haha. i'm guessing that is the weight of the 15 inch? and i really wish they had some specifics on the video card in those guys. the 8400m right now sucks so much.
-
There is a picture of Compaq CQ20, a 12.1" notebook, but no description or data sheet at all in this news article. From the picture, and as a Compaq brand, I hope it will be a very reasonably priced notebook. However, from the picture, it said Design in Asia for Asia. Don't know if it will ship to USA. I will buy it if they do.
-
And also 5.5lbs for 15.4", finally comparable to Macbook Pro. -
Dustin Sklavos Notebook Deity NBR Reviewer
I have to chime in and say I agree with some of the posters here, I think the current build looks a lot better than these new ones. These new ones remind me an awful lot of Dell's current Inspiron designs.
I don't think I'm going to be losing sleep over these, I'm pretty happy with my dv2500t. -
I hate the dv series looks already...lol.
-
I see that there's a 12" Compaq Presario CQ20, but the text mentions it as the 15.4" CQ50....
I do remember seeing interactive demos for a Compaq Presario CQ40 and a CQ70 model as well. -
Looks like JerryJ has 3 more options for his morning shave.
-
I don't dislike the look of these machines, hopefully HP will have solved their main issue for me of a lack of graphical bang for your machine size compared to other manufacturers... not looking for a 14" with an 8800M GTX but an 8600M GT would be nice in the 15" model.
However, I really have to agree with Pulp, the 15.4" model just looks quite a lot like an Inspiron 1520, except they've polished the keybaord area to an unbelievable shine and they've polished the screen bezel so hard that paint's all come off. Being entirely honest though, I like the imprint finish because even though it shows fingerprints and scuffs really easily, it seems very hard wearing in general usage. -
It looks like HP made a data sheet template or something because all of them are apparently 5.48lbs and have the same dimensions. Assuming those specs are for the dv5, its not bad though. I agree the pics make the new line look like Toshibas or the [Un]Inspirons but the pics on HP's site look better...but still crap

...what the ****?!?!?! Is that an Apple-style hinge? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I wish they kept the current design but added the hard drive accelerometer. -
any talk about prices?
-
Anyone know when the special editions will come out. Should really look nice in White.
-
Why is HP not making Gaming laptops?
same old design with new specs.
they should try to compete with ASUS G1 -
All Hp had to do was to reduce the thickness and weight of their current laptops a little bit and provide higher resolutions screens and have options for gaming graphics!!!!!!!!!!!
All the changes they have made are for design and not neccesary.. -
popextra: you hit the point. That's really all they had to do, make it thinner and lighter.
I guess if we want that from HP, we will have to look into their business or the new elite serie. -
well, if anyone cares, laptopmag.com has a review up about the 5000t series.
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/hp-pavilion-dv5t-entertainment-notebook-pc.aspx -
looks like a 9600 gt in the 5t series!!! whoohoo!! much better than last models.
-
and again, what's with the dropped hinge (ala Apple) and VGA camera? The current series has a 1.3 MP cam! -
-
Any info on when it would be available on hp.com in US ?
-
-
-
these are beautiful i can't wait. it's a shame that HP's distribution system in Canada sucks so bad

(go to the pictures of the back and sides)
Anyway, I just happen to hate that type of design due to the lack of 180 degree movement, plus it appears more fragile (I'm probably wrong but IMO it still looks like it). -
Ahh,yes I see what you mean. They weren't used in the Pavilions but they used it with the Presario equivalents(v3000/v6000 etc)...
http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/19417.jpg
LOL, thats why they seemed nothing new to me. My fault, I kinda presumed the Pavilions had the same design. In any case FWIW I think its more preffered design these days, Toshiba seems to have followed the same route. Even the new Dell Inspirons(leaked images - Engadget) are expected to have the same/similar hinge design. -
LOL yeah. I guess this is just unfortunate for me :S
-
I just purchased a decked out DV9700t (2.5ghz, 4GB ram, 320gb HD, Bluray, etc.). Think I should return it and get the DV7t when it comes out? My DV9700t arrives in the mail next week. I guess I'll know more when I get it, but the new Intel chip, the HD protection, the updated ultra infinity brightview, and the updated case is hard to resist. I am so torn.
-
the dv9700t will cost u atleast 500$ cheaper then the dv7t!
-
True, part of me is thinking it could be worth it, just to have the newest technology (Intel's new cpu). It's like anything you buy, once you buy it, something else comes out that is a little better (car, Ipod, etc.). This thread has almost convinced me to stick with what I ordered, but we'll see once I get it. I will have 21 days to decide.
