If you want any variant of linux, I recommend vmware. Ubuntu will certainly not have all the drivers needed to run the tx2, especially the multitouch.
I have vmware workstation running in windows and Debian etch with a 64-bit kernel installed inside it. You can't tell the difference from the natively-installed debian, and the great thing is: all the hardwares work out of the box. Vmware is reasonably priced; they may even have free versions for download.

And about games, for example, this tablet could run sins of a solar empire (an example really) in max settings ?
I already know the Radeon 3200 and what the chip can do ( build a desktop system with the ECS A780G ), the mobile version equals the desktop solution? -
So, how responsive is the touchscreen for gaming? I'm talking games that use mouse exclusively? anyone played adventure/puzzle games on one?
What is screen like? looking for glossy/reflective over matte. I don't want grainy. -
Great review

Great review. -
nice review. I really want a tablet, but I'm waiting for touch screens to make their way onto netbooks. with netbook prices.

I dont think anyone has asked this, nor was it in the review but...
I REALLY WANT TO KNOW, please :]
Does this tablet pc, act like a wacom tablet?
Does it have the wacom digitizer thing?
Like can it do pressure sensitivity and pen tilt?
and if it doesnt.
1-What is the current best tablet pc that has wacom enabled technonlogy?
2-What is the best one with wacom technology, but in the 1000$ range, or close to it. -
I own the tx2 and yes, it has some pressure support but only on few programs like Artrage or SAI. No GIMP, Corel, Photoshop or such, at least according to this thread: http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/fo...th-Photoshop-Corel-ARRRGH-PLEASE-HELP/?page=2. I'm no graphic designer and for me it's good for taking notes but for some more complicated stuff like some Flash I prefer my Wacom Bamboo.
Have you checked out the HP tm2? It's the new version of this model and has a Wacom digitizer. It's around the same price of the tx2 (899 US$ base model). Specs are here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...=notebooks&series_name=tm2t_series&aoid=35252. Hope it helps! -
My husband is wanting this laptop so that he can prepare legal documents, while he is IN SESSION with our clients. Has anyone used the document processing (kinda like fillable PDF) on these machines? If so, can you tell me if you would recommend it or if there is another machine out there that would be a better fit?
We don't need all the bells and whistles...on this machine.
Thank You! -

I've had a tx2 for 6 months now. This is my first HP notebook and my second tablet pc. My first was a Gateway, which I liked a great deal, but gateway no longer makes a tablet. I am dissatisfied with the tx2 specifically and, in a broader sense with HP as a brand.
1. The battery life of my new HP is a fraction of what was available from my old Gateway and an even smaller fraction of what is now available from other notebooks on the market 2 v. 5 v. 8-10 hours.
2. When I lost the use of the cursor I was informed by tech support that it was because I was using the computer under a desk lamp. Using an overhead room light solved the problem, but the inability to use the computer with a desk light is an inconvenience. There is an accessory keyboard light available, but HP does not include it with the unit -- or even recommend it with purchase since they don't want to highlight this deficiency.
3. The unit stopped working and I was told by tech support to return it to HP for a motherboard replacement. Since I believed it was under warranty I mentioned two minor cosmetic issues I thought might be taken care of at the same time -- a chipped key and what appeared to be a small internal scratch on the screen. I asked for, and was given, the option to pay a surcharge to expedite shipping. After they received the unit, HP contacted me to say they found evidence of a spill and that suspended the warranty. I was quoted a price of nearly $800 for repairs, which included the minor cosmetic work. HP would not provide me with a price breakdown, or allow me to opt for the functional repair only. Moreover, they would not give me time to consider whether such a costly repair was worth it -- they required an immediate credit card authorization or they were going to return the machine unfixed. I felt unduly pressured, and wrote the NY Time's "Haggler" columnist to express my shock at this customer treatment. In two days time I received phone messages from two different people from HP. The first tersely informed me they would do the repairs without charge. When I asked why he mentioned an e-mail from the Times. I was told to expect a shipping box for the unit, and so did not return the call of the second HP rep since I believed the issue was resolved. Several days went by without receiving the shipping box. I called the second HP contact and was told that she was handling the case now and required confirmation of my address before the box could be sent. I said I still had the box from the earlier transaction and would gladly take the unit to fedex and pay for shipping in order to expedite the repair and avoid another few days wait for a new box from HP. Could she give me the address? I was told that was not an option because a shipping label had to be generated. I suggested I could print the label if they gave me a link to access it or sent it to me in an e-mail. The HP rep then verbally abused me, reminding me that my warranty had been suspended and HP was only doing this repair because they had been contacted from the Times. It will take 2-3 business days to get the box to me, 2-3 days to get the unit to HP, 7-10 days for repair, and another 2-3 days for return, and without any option for expediting. I am looking at nearly a month before I see a working machine. The whole experience has been awful. Each HP contact has been extremely frustrating to deal with. None has had any interest in working with me to solve the issue in a mutually satisfying way. -
This is one of the worst designs ever build . .
I owned a tx2 1015ea for 13 months and you could easily boil water if you leave a glass next to the fan outlet
after 13 months I had to replace the motherboard cos the VGA chip almost disintegrated with the heat generated. after 6 months from replacement the board failed again . . now the tx2 is dumped
one thing is for sure . . I will never give a penny to HP again. -
How was your experience with the laptop itself, when compared to the Gateway? -
Can someone please tell me how this laptop compares to the 1275dx or 1375dx or 1370us models? Which one is better as far as performance? Thank you!!

And regarding this model, its a turd...just like all consumer-oriented tablets. If you're serious about a quality tablet, check out business class machines like HP's Elitebook series (2730p, 2740p, 2760p), Lenovo's Thinkpad series (X200T, X201T, X220T), or Fujitsu's T-series Lifebooks (T5010, T730, T731, T900, T901).
