The latest numbers for the fourth quarter of 2006 reflecting number of notebooks sold by each company shows that HP continues to power ahead of everyone else, and the distance between HP and second place Dell keeps growing. In terms of worldwide shipments, Acer is even putting the pressure on Dell and catching up fast.

Below is a table of sales data as reported by market analyst DisplaySearch:

Worldwide Notebook shipments: 3Q-4Q 2006 (numbers in millions of units)
    Brand 3Q06 4Q06 Growth 4Q06 share
    1. HP 3.6 4.7 29% 20.0%
    2. Dell 3.6 3.5 (2%) 15.0%
    3. Acer 2.4 3.1 29% 13.3%
    4. Toshiba 2.2 2.3 5% 9.8%
    5. Lenovo 1.7 2.0 18% 8.4%
    6. Fujitsu-Siemens 1.3 1.2 (7%) 5.3%
    7. Sony 0.8 1.2 40% 5.0%
    8. Asus 0.7 1.0 49% 4.4%
    9. Apple 1.0 1.0 (7%) 4.1%
    10. All Other Brands 3.1 3.4 11% 14.5%
    Total 20.5 23.4 14% 100%

You can see that HP had an amazing growth spurt from 3Q06 to 4Q06 of 29% more notebooks shipped, with 4.7 million notebooks shipped overall in the months of Oct. - Dec. Meanwhile, Dell shipments actually shrank quarter to quarter. The industry average growth was 14% more notebooks shipped, so Dell was lagging behind all competition in terms of growth.

It is important to note that Dell still remains #1 in North America for number of notebooks shipped. HP was #1 in Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Europe Middle East and Africa market region (EMEA).

Acer matched the growth HP experienced with 29%, allowing it to actually close in on Dell for the #2 spot. Toshiba had slower than industry growth in Q4 so Acer was able to stretch its lead over that company. Lenovo in fact had a very good Q4 and grew faster than the industry average by shipping 18% more notebooks over Q3.

Apple and Fujitsu both slipped up by shipping less notebooks in Q4 as compared to Q3. Asus made huge gains by shipping 49% more notebooks as they moved deeper into the retail sector.

According to DisplaySearch, the number of notebooks shipped this year over last will be much greater, the expectation is for 97 million notebooks to be shipped in 2007.

That Dell buying Acer would have been a good suggestion in early 2005. 2006 was clearly a record year for Acer. I contribute it to the fact that Dell computers look like crap and they never decided to fully implement their computers into major electronics stores, kind of a no-brainer thing to do IMHO. Hows a 15% market share company going to buy a 13.3% one? ;)

    Hooray for HP too!

For any one who doesn't know, I spilt half a glass of squash on my keyboard and watched it seep in  None of that take it apart to dry stuff. Kept using it and its still like new :)

I'd like to think when I do upgrade in 2009/10, HP will still do a laptop with a gaming GPU

HP is awesome. This just shows how much of a marketing success the dv6000t and other new-generation Pavilion notebooks are.

I'm also really happy that Asus is moving up the line. Whether or not Asus can keep the same type of quality control that they currently have, while moving up on the ladder, remains to be seen.

Man, this is good news IMO. I really like the design of the HPs, unlike Dell's white on silver...

Good to see Asus up there too, packin the video cards in :)

I think this is a huge factor in HP's recent success. Their dv series notebooks look awesome, have a good feature set, and good build quality. Dell's consumer machines look like clunkers from 1995.

HP's notebooks are also available in retail stores. People walk in, try out a nice HP notebook, and buy it immediately. With Dell, you can at best go to a Kiosk if there is one nearby, before purchasing.

I would like to add that I am a Dell Latitude user and am generally a Dell fan (on my third Dell right now).

we can see, what bad design can make - Inspiron line with its white 'bumpers', latitude line lacking powerfull graphics, with mono speakers and silver, scrachy? lids...
IMHO only good dell product last year was xps1210.
