HP just launched two new 16:9 HDX notebooks, the HDX16 and HDX18, in both 16” and 18.4” form factors. Both of these entertainment powerhouses will offer the standard assortment of hi-definition goodies including Blu-ray optical drives, HDMI/VGA outputs, and powerful NVIDIA 9600M GT graphics. Prices start at $1,249 for the 16” model and $1,549 for the 18.4” model. Expect to see both models start to ship before the end of this month.

Other than the 16:9 res, the HDX is pretty much just a run-of-the-mill entertainment notebook now. Meh.

Why not give the 16" model a 1080P option like Acer does with their 16" 6920/6930 series? Sony doesn't do this either, you have to go with their 18" laptops to get 1080P. Are you afraid of hurting sales of your 18" model?

Ugh. I think 16:9 displays have no place in computer displays. Give me a 16:10 so I can play 16:9 media and still have menus on the screen without obscuring the video. (For that matter, I would prefer a 1920x1200 TV too, for exactly the same reason.)

Great! A 16" screen with the same vertical resolution as the 14" CRT that I used 10 years ago. I am wondering if we will see 2.35:1 wide screen LCDs on laptops soon.

See the problem I have is I LOVE screen real estate. My 17in 1920x1200 screen is awesome, but using the new ratio eats screen real estate. Wide screen was already squished enough at 16:10, and now they squish it more?

Very cool! I wonder what the 16:9 ratio would be like. Too bad the HD16 has a very low resolution (1366x768). I'd love to have the resolution of the HD18 in the HD16 form factor (then again, my 15.4" 16:10 notebook display has a 1920x1200 display resolution...)

16:10 has this too, the new ratio format doesn't effect width rather its a height adjustment.

woah, first notebook i see with windows 64-bit pre-installed! i wonder if there will be enough support of driver or software application...

i've seen/played the new sony VAIO FW 16:9 screen. i like the propotion of the notebook. however, vertical viewing space is limited, and is making me bend my neck and hunch more than my liking, also, it might be nice for watching movie and what not, but when reading the net or making an essay/report; it is inconvinient and uncomfortable.

I know it seems counter to the idea behind these notebooks, but I really hope they introduce smaller versions (e.g., 13", 14") for entertainment buffs on the go.

A don't like the idea of 16:9 notebook neither. Most of documents and webpages go from up to down, that means, you have to do lots of scrolling if you want to read more than 20 lines at once. Also, most of UI elements in common GUI utilize top, not left - how much of real usable height is left, after MS office "Ribbon" take another precious top space?

Ultimately, I think 16:9 notebooks are profit-motivated, not usability-motivated. 16:9 screens are cheaper to produce than 4:3 screens of same size. That means, they can sell screen with "bigger" number for cheaper price.

Also, this is quite a bit (1lbs) heavier than FW. I am not impressed.

They axed the 20" Dragon for this crap?? Can hardly believe it. The video card is way weaker than 8800, and the screens look far too squashed and fat.

This is far too heavy. Not much tangible benefit over the dv5t (same hardware, and only slightly larger resolution) and yet its a full pound heavier, as well as being a pound heavier than the competing Sony FW, which in comparison to this, looks rather enticing...

i don't see why everyone is complaining about the extra pound in weight. the extra half a kg is hardly noticeable when carrying around, and makes no differance when sitting on your desk

If the 18.4" ships with a 9800m GTS as an option and assuming the build quality is greatly improved from the last HP dv9000 I had, I would probably buy it. Why can't HP put a quality touchpad on these notebooks?

Agreed wholeheartedly. Why not appeal to the gamer crowd as well as the multimedia enthusiasts? They'd make a helluva lot more money that way.

Yeah, I can't believe they would axe the REAL HDX beast for these. I went on the HP site a few days ago and wondered where that notebook went. They should bring the 20.1" back with like a 9800m GTX and then I would probably buy one in a heartbeat.

Try looking at it using Firefox. I had the same problem with Internet Explorer but it works fine using Firefox. Don't know why.

Oh boy, 1920x1080..... all the better to end up with your subtitles and captions on TOP of the video instead of sitting beneath it! Now, when you play a 16:9 video and have the playback controls visible.... you'll have black bars on all four sides!

They will fix the HDX16 resolution to higher one, you can be sure in this! At least since the dv5 series has 1680x1050 high quality displays! The higher res will be avaible with the sellingss start

I already gone for dv5, and I think 16:9 is too much for me.. probably next year some better than mine 16:10 15.4'' will replace mine dv5, which I love.. Huge performance for money, if bought with 400$ or 500$ coupon
