HP has released the Pavilion dv1000, a 14" WXGA screennotebookwith the ability to play DVDs and Music without ever booting up the operating system. The dv1000 is available from HPShopping.com now.

The dv1000appears to have some really nice design touches. All of the notebook's ports--including FireWire and S-Video--as well as a five-in-one media card reader and the DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive are located along the sides of the notebook (instead of the back) for easier access. Small icons placed along the edge of the keyboard identify each of the ports to make it easy to find which one you are looking for.

    Looks like a great notebook.
    Cheap and feature packed.
One prominent thing that I have noticed is that the hpshopping.com does not mention the remote (bundled in the pcmcia slot) as an accessory while almost all reviews rave about this remote !!
I called them up and it seems that they are out of stock on remotes (it has been less than a week since it was introduced !!) and they plan on bundling it soon !!!!
Also it doesnt have the Briteview technology. Still not sure if it is worth going for as most of the marketing by HP/IBM or any other company (except Sony) does not harp on this feature. Must admit that it looked really attractive when I saw this enhanced LCD in bestbuy.

Keep posting if you find new info on this notebook.

The dv1000 does look pretty good. From the top view, it looks like they're going for the IBM ThinkPad look.

The two things I notice: max 1.7 Pentium M, and integrated Intel video (can it do 3d?).

If anyone happens to pick one up, please post your opinions here. Thanks.

Seems like a winner for budget price and light workload. One thing I have always wondered about notebook design - I hope this won't get too controversial - is why someone would go for the Thinkpad look. It seems like one of the least asthetically pleasing notebook designs out there (IMHO), including models like GQ's budget notebook. If I was going to copy a look, it would be more like the HP zv & zx series, or the Inspirons with the changeable snap-on covers. But again, this is a budget lappy - very easy on the ol' wallet.

    Cheers,

    Stevo

I just ordered the HP DV1000. I've read positive reviews over several websites and it sounds like this is the best product (pricewise, size-wise, technology included). I got the notebook with:

    Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 745 (1.8 GHz)
    XP professional
    14" WXGA widescreen BrightView
    512 x 1 MB DDR SDRAM (standard)
Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (no options in this dept.)
80 GB HD @ 4200 RPM (all hard drives are 4200 that were offered)
    DVD/CD-RW combo drive
    Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG & Bluetooth
    12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
3-year HP Express Repair extended service plan
HP dv1000 Remote Control (doubt I'll use much but nice to show off)
HP Deskjet 5850 wireless printer ($50 after rebate)
    Kensington wireless mouse
HP iPAQ rx3115 Mobile Media Companion
    Kensington Notebook lock

I ordered all of this for roughly $2400 plus $150 in rebates before tax with student discount. I feel like it will be a nice system to have for school and road trips. This will be my first laptop, so the pressure is on for HP to impress. :)
I will write more when I get it and test it out. Anybody have experience with HP? I'm hoping for a durable product that I won't have much trouble maintaining.
The main complaint that I have read is that the graphics card is shared instead of dedicated, but I'm not planning on this being a huge gaming machine. I will leave the desktop for that.

Student discount? Can you elaborate on that? Does your school have a tie-up with HP or is HP offering some rebates to students?

I did not even know they had student discounts either, but I called them instead of completing my order online (I just like to talk to the people from where I'm buying from) and I said that I am a student, getting his thoughts on what I had configured, and he stated they do offer a student discount. It is not associated with any one school. I am just glad I called and found out...it atleast saved me a few hundred dollars!

I ordered the dv1000, student discount (and don't forget to get cash back with fatwallet.com). I chose to get only 256 mb of memory, figuring I'd buy extra memory for cheaper from Crucial, but now I realize that I don't know what kind of memory to buy (and they don't have the dv1000 listed on their site yet). Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can anyone tell me what kind of memory to buy? Thanks.

Has anybody got their hands on this one yet?
I need to know whether the 4 hour rating is for a 6 cell or a 12 cell battery pack.

Mine ships on September 30th. I am almost positive the 4 hour rating is for the 6-cell battery. The guy I ordered from said the 12-cell should last me atleast 6 to 8 or so hours. We'll see when I get it. I want them to build it correctly, but I am definitely impatient.

As far as the memory question post, did you order through hpshopping? They had 512 x 1 memory standard = you wouldn't pay extra for it. It was actually more expensive to get 512 x 2. crazy.

Yeah... what is the deal with the BrightView being gone? HP order personnel told me they were out of stock... that was about 10 seconds before they were going to place my order for one! I only caught that they had removed the option AFTER I discovered that my shopping cart (with a BrightView) had been emptied on Saturday (09/25) morning... Regarding the memory and memory speed... According to HP's official documentation, they install PC2100 (266 MHz) memory even though the bus speed is rated to handle PC2700 (333 MHz) memory. The factory installed memory is in a slot UNDER the keyboard.[xx(]

    Uh, Crucial support said this:

You need PC3200 compliant DDR for your system. We currently have the following options available:

    128MB CT1664X40B Non-ECC
    256MB CT3264X40B Non-ECC
    512MB CT6464X40B Non-ECC

    Is that wrong?

I'd like to know what you think of the Panasonic when you work with it. It definitely looks like one that others will follow in design.

I received my dv1000 a few days ago and I am very pleased with it. The screen is absolutely perfect (good size, image quality). I got the 12-cell battery which makes it tilted a little in back, but I actually like it...kind of give it a stand. I am just very pleased with it. The wireless picked right up at college and I am currently picking up free internet from the neighbors until I get a router for my house. I've gotten several compliments on the looks of the machine. The keyboard is a good size and is easy to type on (I was nervous since this is my first laptop). It is definitely not the right notebook for someone wanting a gaming nackine, but most of you know that. The remote control is a nice add on. I have put that to use a few times. If there are any questions about the laptop, post here and I can send pictures or answer a question the best I can. Hopefully this will be a solid laptop for a few years.

I ordered my first laptop. I got the dv1000. I ordered it thru Costco. so that i can take advantage of the 6 month policy...last night I read, I think through this forum,,, pages,,, of comments on the dv1000... this morning all I can find is this thread....anyway what I read last night taught me that I made two mistakes in my configuration... the 12 cell battery ( I hate the way it looks) and not getting the briteview screen... anyway... I ordered another machine last night and I hope this morning when the CS center opens up I can cancel my first order....

I am looking to purchase my first laptop, and it's driving me crazy. At the moment, I'm settled on the dv1000 with the following components:
    - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    - Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 745 (1.8 GHz)
    - 14.0" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x768)
    - Intel(R) Extreme Graphics
    - 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
    - 80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    - FREE Upgrade from DVD to DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive!!
    - Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG WLAN
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

basically i need reassurance that this is a good computer for me. i plan on using it for web browsing, word processing, some photo imaging, playing music, ipod, and running the SIMS on occasion. my concern is that it will not run the SIMS well because of the video card. i really don't know much about computers, so any advice is appreciated.

Just a question, but by not booting up to play music/dvds...does that = longer battery life? of not?

Apparently, using Quickplay does not increase battery life as the processor chugs on at full throttle.

Anyone getting a dv1000 or v2004ap should take a close look at the Benq Joybook 7000. It has ATI 9700 graphics card and 200 nits wide LCD screen.

Value for money for dv1000 and v2004ap? I don't think so.

I want to get the Intel Celeron M 1.5Ghz processor.

However, you can't get the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN with this processor.
Instead, you can have to get the 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM).
Can anyone tell me what the difference between these two is?
I mean, all I really want to know is that the latter option has Wi-Fi funcitonality. I'm assuming the answer is yes.

Also, I can't get the Brightview option with this processor. Is this really necessary? Or is it another unnessary battery drainer.

    Thanks.
