HP just released the new dv3500t Pavilion, finally adding 13.3” notebook to their current consumer lineup. This notebook has a starting configuration price of $999, offering base features of an Intel T5800 2.0GHz processor, a WXGA display, 2GB of memory, an NVIDIA 9300M graphics card with 512MB of video RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. For an added $725 you can upgrade the system to 8GB of DDR2 or for an additional $100 equip the notebook with an LED backlit display. One really nice upgrade that HP offers for this notebook for only $25 is a backlit keyboard option, which I really hope they offer on larger models.

    • 65W AC adapter
    • 1-year limited H/W warranty

While the features aren’t that impressive given the hefty price tag, we should see some deals on this notebook in the coming months as we move closer to the holiday buying season.

More information and pricing details are available on the HP website.

It is nice, except the starting price and no color options. Hope they change that soon.

That is actually pretty sweet. I'd take it over most competing 13" notebooks out there.

Yeah, it's a good looking/spec'd laptop except for the hideous bronze color. I couldn't bring myself to buy one soley for that reason.

Only the base isn't. The bestbuy configuration is a 7350, while the website also has the 8400 and 9400 available.

For me, this laptop solves a bit of a dilemma as to which 13"er to pick up... do I take the u330 and sacrifice battery life, do I take the SZ and sacrifice the HDMI, do I grab the p300 and pay a fair bit more for it, etc etc. This seems like a sweet spot, has all the features I want, and heck, I don't even mind the copper!

Only one problem... when it'll be available in Canada :(.

this reviewer says it does not have much features for the price. I'm I crazy? or does this little 13" puppy pack more punch for ratio in it than the bloody 16" and 18" models HP has!!! 400GB of storage! 8 GB of ram! 2.53 GHZ, 6mb L2 cache processor with 1066 bus. dedicated graphics, LED backlight. all in a 13" form factor. Yeah, it's thicker, and a little heavier than most 13" competitors but it actually has power, performance, and feature richness that those guys don't have!! I just can't get over the fact that it has more to offer than mainstream, bigger sized notebooks out there!!

All I wish was the resolution had option for 1440x900, 7200 rpm drive or SSD, ddr3 memory instead of ddr2, then i'd buy this in a heart beat.

Well HP took their time didn't they?

-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=237508<- (dv3000tx first thoughts, Asia pacific model. from back in April)

I reckon they should have stuck with the silver and black colour scheme. the backlit keyboard in this model is certainly a neat touch.

It likely is still Centrino 2, since the cheaper of the new Centrino 2 machines use the older processors.

I can't say that I'm a big fan of HP's recent styling on their Pavillions though.

Does the T5800 processor keep it from being 'Centrino 2"? It still has the new Intel 5100AGN wireless.

The T5800 is a new processor. It replaces the 2.0GHz T5750 (which had a 667MHz FSB) but the T5800 has an FSB speed of 800MHz.

The most impressive feature of the Centrino 2 platform is Intel's new 4500MHD integrated graphics. It's not a factor with the dv3000t, which has nVIDIA discrete graphics standard.

By the way, what's up with naming it the dv3500t? Shouldn't it be the dv3t, to be consistent with all the new HP models?

I would have to say I really like this notebook so far espically the color and the fact that it has eSata port and hdmi. I have two external hard drives (one backs up the other as a backup) and one has eSata but I haven't found many NBs with that feature.

If you need video card performance but don't need HDMI, then SR1xx is probably the best bet right now as it is being discounted in preparation for SR2xx, which has HDMI.

On the other hand, competition has definitely heated up in the 13.3" segment, 4 years after Sony introduced the first 13.3" wide, Type S. Wonder how long it will take for the other manufacturers to catch up with Sony's 13.1" Z now...

Hope they give color options and bring down the price with those discount coupons like they had for hp dv5t and dv4t.....another great 13.3".....but I wish they would move up to DDR3 ram like Lenovo did (just for the sake of being DDR3 and not for performance)....shocked to see you can go up to 8GB!.....that's sure a future proof RAM upgrade.

But you are going to pay a premium for those upgrades

I believe its the U330.....SR is overpriced in my opinion....it has the ATI HD 3470 which is the overclocked form of HD 3450 that U330 offers....U330 has the DDR3 ram which is more expensive.....large hard drive.....HDMI output like the SR.....I don't know about the graphic card of this new HP 13.3" yet.....doubt it can use the whole 512 MB if it's only 64-bit card......and you pay a premium for the upgrades

Wonder how many hrs of battery life this new HP laptop will give.....it will be a very good competitor to U330 if it has at least 4hrs!

I 100% agree with you, my notebook has DDR3 Ram and i feel a HUGE difference don't listen to the crap that everyone else is saying that "there is no difference" i know, as someone who has a notebook with DDR2 and DDR3 ram thats what im waiting for im waiting for DDR3 Ram and GPU in a portable notebook before i make my choice.

It's not the RAM type that's responsible for making your system feel faster. Notice how your DDR2 system has half the RAM, a slower CPU, and a slower GPU. They are also from different vendors and thus likely have a very high amount of variables that make your DDR3 claim unfounded.

There is zero real world performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 right now. Not even a significant difference in synthetic benchmarks. The main advantage of DDR3 memory in notebooks right now is that it draws less power.

I have to agree with Aleman - your CPU is better in the DDR3 in every way (clock, L2, FSB), and the GPU and RAM amount are much better. There's a few too many variables to conclude it's the type of RAM.

I must say I like the style on this notebook - the reflective palmrests actually look quite good, considerably better than the average HP. That probably means it also has the extraordinarily glossy screens most HP's have, but if you're going to go way too glossy I guess you might as well do it with style.

I would imagine it depends on the person. I haven't had any problem with touchpads on HP's. I remember hearing a tech call were some guy said his touchpad was broken cause it would jump around for no reason turns out he was hitting it when he typed.

Benchmark Smenchmark where did you see these benches? I run about 50 Firefox pages at once and im not even feeling anything slightly that seems like a slowdown in opening programs/performance. On my vaio AR i can only run about 30 when there is like a huge slowdown in everything did these benches do anything like the things i do i also run steam, windows media player, and my documents, im telling you one day im gonna overload just to see everything it can handle.

I'm on DDR2 and I'm running 82 firefox windows with a video in each one, opera, using aim, and using msn on the older processors and I'm not experiencing a slowdown at all........I'm only at 20% average CPU usage and 57% ram. 7% more than idle...

I'm pretty sure this is not because of DDR3 vs. DDR2 RAM. Like others said DDR3 offers hardly any performance gain over DDR2. It does offer slightly better battery life.

It seems DDR3 gives better RAM score on the Windows VISTA Index score.....still I believe there's no huge gain in performance (higher bandwidth but greater latency).....but I just want it for the sake of being DDR3...three....not two....I don't like falling behind these hardware updates since my current laptop is DDR....and it sucks

I actually am really starting to like this notebook. Backlit keyboard, LED backlit screen, 9300M GS, 4.1lbs, kinda chunky, kinda cute - this is like the successor to the Asus W7S, except it'll have far better battery life. And its a lot (like a LOT a lot) more glossy, based on the other HP consumer notebooks. *sigh*

Personally, I prefer the HP designs that put the Touchpad in the center of the laptop. For someone who is right-handed, the farther right the touchpad is, the easier it is to use. If you think it doesn't matter, imagine the touchpad on your laptop is on the opposite side from whatever your dominant hand is. Now imagine trying to use it.
My crazy idea is that they should have right or left side options for the touchpad when you purchase a laptop, just like there are right and left handed mice available.

there is no blu-ray option on hp shopping, called HP and the agent told me i could purchase it on its own in future and have it upgraded..

i have my doubts about this as i checked out other similar models with the bronze material at bestbuy and it doesnt seem possible...a check with the bestbuy girl about the dv3510nr that is on pre-order and after asking her colleagues some questions she suggested i have to purchase an external drive in future... :| which kinda beats the purpose.

The color is not the greatest and the price is a little off. The specs aren't too bad by any means. I might give this notebook more thoughts if the price was slightly lower and if it had other color options. But as it stands right now, it's a no go.
