Chaz,notebookcheck got 4400 3DMarks in their review
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Short-Review-HP-Pavilion-dv5-1032eg-Entertainment-Notebook.10729.0.html -
They ran 3dmark at 1280x800, chaz did it at 1280x1024. Fairly big difference between the two. Chaz's dv5t has a WSXGA+ screen where as notebookcheck's dv5t had a WXGA screen.

ah,i see!thx Johnny

hy chaz,great review.
i am going to buy this notebook and i have one question about it?
is there a program to undervolt/underclock the gpu so the temperatures are lower(like cpu) and what program is that?
can you do it with your notebook and post idle and load results please??
thank you (sorry for my bad english ) -
It is close to impossible to undervolt a GPU. Nvidia's Powermizer should undervolt automatically when you are not in game.

I just purchased this for a nice deal.
Right now there's a $150 instant discount. Use the coupon code "NB9970" to get an extra $200 off.
Before you can use the coupon code, make sure you are not signed in if you're a APP (Academic Purchase Program). That program only discounts about $60 and you cannot use coupons. Log out before you configure your system then log in when you do the checkout.
This coupon expires 8/25/08.
Also, to quality for this coupon, you need to configure the system to be over $999.99. I had a configuration that got to $1003.99. This excludes the instant discount and the coupon. Good luck.
1003.99
-$150
-$200
---------
653.99
Also, free shipping (ground)... at least when I purchased it. -
Ignore me. I didn't notice this site has the coupon code already.
I found it through google. -
Excellent review!
I'm in the market for a laptop and your comments on the 9600 GPU were helpful! -
Has anyone added the tv tuner option??

Well I am getting the customizable HP dv5z with the specs below. I am not going to use for gaming, only for college (browsing internet, word, and powerpoint). My question is: is there anything here that I can change that will reduce the heating up of the notebook and also anything that I can change to expand battery life? Here's the link to the laptop. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...eLink=true&bvLoadCart=1&action=add&disp_msg=0

But we're starting to get OT... more questions about Office should be in a new thread in the Windows forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15 -
Thanks for the links. Seems like a good deal, though idk if I'll ever use that extra stuff so not sure it's worth the hassle.

Hello
Im owner of HP dv5 1070 with infinity Bright View 1280x800. I heve problem with sharpness and real colors. Black and white picture are little blue. I check my display with Everest program and it shows that display is made by Samsung. In 1060 display isnt made by samsung and colors are much better.I wont to change my notebook for dv5 1070 with Bright View 1680x1050. I dont wont Infinity because its not to good for sunny weather.
My question is:
Is 1680x1050 display made by samsung too?
If not Who makes it? -
Sory for mistakes. Im still learning english !

Btw has anybody ran the MSconfig utility on one of these. I had 80 programs running out of the box and almost 1.4gb ram being used at idle. Wondering what is the most common stuff I should shut off. I am down to around 60 programs running at idle. -
do you think i should go for a mbp or t400 over the canadian version of dv5t?

Seriously thinking of getting this laptop, but after the review I'm a little worried.
I would use this on my lap, sometimes even for gaming, or on a wooden table.
Would this cause problems, and would the temp. make it too hot to use on my lap, even when almost idle eg. surfing the net or watching a movie
Thanks, Great review by the way - just what I was looking for -
Although I thought the pictures were great, I felt that the cons could have been discussed more. I've been scouring the internet searching for a new laptop and I find a lot of companies talking about how great their computers are. I'm more interested in exactly what could go wrong with the computer, any defects it might have, if it breaks, etc. For example I've had 3 different brands of laptops, and in every one of them the CD drives have stopped working, the screens start to fall forward too easily, etc. As most computers aren't lasting more than a few years anyways I'd like to know what's going to fail first to see if it's worth it.
Despite that I think this may be the computer I'm going to go with. I do have a few questions though:
1. How accurate is screen color? What about with the Brightview Infinity? I'm a photographer and use Photoshop a LOT, so need to know exactly what the picture is going to look like when printed.
2. Do the speakers keep playing when the screen closes? My Dell Inspiron 6000 will continue to play music with the laptop shut, which is a nice feature.
3. I keep seeing people say that they're finding it for under $600, but the cheapest I've found it on line is around $800. If I'm going to spend $800 I'd like to make sure I'm getting a computer that's worth it.
Thanks for the review and advice! -
GOOD JOB CHAZ .
1) Do you think that we can have some pictures from the inside ?
2) Since the BIOS shows that this machine is capable of 8GB RAM MAX. I was wondering if vista 64 bits will be able to fully utilize the 8GB ??
3) Since I have the PAVILION DV5-1010 and does not come with the bluetooth module on it, I was wondering if is possible to add it.
thx -
Hi Chaz , great review - realy good pictures too!!
In terms of dispay , how does it compare with the zepto 6625wd (in case you've seen it).
Cheers -
(Edit: Seems the dv5-1015ea does indeed have a P8400 processor in most UK retail stores unlike what it says on the HP site.)
Great review, but like RaYYaN I'm wondering just how hot it gets as I'd sit with it on my lap, most of the time it just be web browsing so maybe it would be ok. -
Thanks! I got problem while installing Windows XP? Anybody please help, what's wrong with the chipset ICH9, is it incompatible with Windows XP? I'm a ~newbie~.

Hello everyone,
this was a great review and I thank you for it .Now the battle in my head is DV5 or xps m1530.Ah well ill have to win that one on my own.
For those who would like to get this laptop with the DD3 version of the 9600GT you are all welcome to come to a little country in the heart of Europe called Slovakia and you can get it in a similar confguration with above mentioned 9600 GT 512MB DD3 fo about 1600$ The price is a bit higher but thats only becasue our crown got stronger and your dollar weak
Now Im bragging
again thanks for the review -
I'll probably try to use a thin-ish book under it to just keep the air vents away from clothing material. -
I use it regularly on my lap for browsing, photo editing, blogging etc and it doesn't get too hot. I will probably throw on a couple games this weekend and try (maynot be on my lap though - I'm going to use a USB keyboard and mouse to save wear and tear on the laptop keyboard itself)

It is nice. I didn't pick all the best, just what I believed should be in such a nice rig, can't say I'm happy with the total though with a rating of only 4.8?
Plus I'd buy the other 2GB of ram online and save $50, but $50 onto the total.
My conclusion is this Laptop ls a winner! the price is not as attractive! -
As for the WEI rating, disregard it, it's not the best. It also uses the lowest, which would be your graphics. Update your drivers and you will manage a 5.0. -
Can anyone comment on battery life with the high-cap battery and the integrated intel graphics?
-
I got my system couple days ago. I noticed that gets very warm. I used to have XPS before but I sent it back. I noticed that screen in XPS was much more clear than dv5t, I gues due to hiegher resolution. One more thing, hps never went so warm or even hot like dv5t. I still have couple days. I really don't what to do. I really like this computer but if it will run hot like this it might get broken, I think.
I don't wanna use any cooling pads since I use lap desk. -
Awesome review!! Would love someone to expand the section regarding the audio output of the laptop though.
I wonder how this will compare to the DV7T? Anyone here know, like the DV5t does Dv7t have this battery issue as well? -
How can I solve this problem? Is HDD out of order? -
Got some questions and comments. First thing, I just got my dv5t laptop (after waiting 10+ days) and opened the box with no power supply. That sucked a bit. So I'm using a power supply from work so I can get working on this laptop.
My First question is, did your dv5t's preform badly with the first program that "HP Total Care Advisor"? When I first power the laptop on after getting a PS from work, that HP TCA was the first thing to came up, with the video and audio clips skipped badly, almost to the point of the system not being functional. I ask because I feel my laptop is not preforming well. Seems a bit slow.
Second, I'm trying to create the restore disks using recovery manager. And it has wasted 4 dvds now (different kinds). Was it fast for you <30mins ? It takes VERY long time to create just one disk for me. In fact, the process has hunged on me twice, once to the point were my dv5t would not get into Vista (it would hung on logon screen). So I ran f11 to restore back to factory, that work well. But still trying to make this Recovery disks. So I can kill this bloatware image.
From the factory, my dv5t uses over 1 gb of ram after boot. That is crazy!
I want to love this laptop, but so far not to good. It is a very NICE laptop, very good looking laptop, but until i see some performance, I have to reserve my excitement.
Please let me know if you have seen the same types of performance on your laptops. Especially the HP total Care Advisor video and audio skipping issue, I'm surprised that HP would release this product with this software that way...
Thanks for your time and help.

I have a question guys, looking forward to see your answers.
I got mine (dv5-1070ee) from KSA and specs are:
CPU: 2.53 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 Cache
OS: Win Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit
RAM: 4GB
VGA: NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512MB of dedicated memory
HDD: 320 GB
My questions are, please guys comment on the following points:
1. I've tested the laptop using Windows Experience Index (WEI), it scored only 5.0 :s, while the one you reviewed has less specs and scored 5.9! Is that because of 4GB came along with 32bit OS? BTW- It's a prebuilt laptop, not my choice of course.
2. Also, I play PES2008 and FIFA09 there're some cuts in the game, while Virtual Tennis3 runs perfect! I use the laptop with the battery removed, I use it when I'm out.
3. Can I install Home Premium 64bit without a CD, or it doesn't worth and Ultimate 64bit is better.
Thanks in advance,
Kindest Regards,
Ayham. -
2) Make sure you under in high performance mode in Vista under battery settings. It makes a difference since Vista downclocks CPU and GPU in power saver and balanced mode (click on batery icon in bottom right). Also, try updating your graphics drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com .
3)You have to "acquire" the 64-bit Vista dvd from downloads or what-not and then you can use the same key as the 32-bit to install it. I think its worth it to upgrade to 64 bit since then you could use all of your RAM. -
1 + 2) I will do the high performance, I think I've missed that. I will check the latest driver. Thank you.
3) Link please? -

Awesome review. I got a DV5-1007TX.
My only issue with the machine is the quick launch buttons are dodgy as hell.. The rest of the machine is rock solid. - Vista
But im heading for a toshiba & taking it back.. If hp can't get some simple buttons right.. can they get anything right?
my last DV5128TX was awesome.. 2 years before anything died. (Dvd burner)
but shes gone now.
once again great review

Hey, I'm considering one of these as a low-end gaming laptop (Everquest 2), getting the 512 9600 Nvidia card, but only 3GB of ram and a T7700(I think) processor.
How is this holding up as a low-end gaming machine? Are there better (cheaper) alternatives? I can get this configured as I want for $875 - I was hoping to spend about $750-800 though. -
has anyone installed Windows XP on their dv5t yet?
-
Just wondering... are the links to the images not working? In IE and Firefox it's a link but when I click I get nothing...
