HP will soon be adding to its Pavilion DV line of notebooks with the dv4000 15.4-inch widescreen notebook. The Compaq Presario v4000 will be released at the same time, it is very similar to the dv4000 but with slightly different design, software load and hardware components.

The dv4000 can be found on the HP website support pages currently at the following location: HP Pavilion dv4000 support
However, it is not yet available for purchase and the specs are not available on the HP site, but below are what we know so far for the specs.
Specs for HP dv4000 and Compaq v4000
- Intel Pentium M "Sonoma" processor familywith 1.3GHz to 2.0GHz speed processors (Celeron processors and older Pentium M processors will also be available for configuration)
- Intel integrated Extreme Graphics (64MB or 128MB options)
- RAM expandable up to 2GB
- 15.4-inch widescreen
- 6-in1 Digital Media Card Reader
- 1 PCMCIA card slot
- 1 Express Card slot
- 802.11 and Bluetooth wireless
- 10.1 inches x 14.1 inches x 1.32 inches (length x width x height)
- 40GB - 100GB hard drive with 5400RPM option for up to 80GB hard drive
- Brightview screenoption available
- 24x DVD/CD-RW combo orDVD+/-RW (single and dual layer) available as options
The HP dv4000 and Compaq v4000 will differ slightly in design and such things as LED colors and functionality of the touchpad (v4000 will have 4-way directional support, dv4000 is just 2-way), but no huge differences we know of outside of these cosmetic and some other mild software differences.
The design and functionality is very much so like the smaller 14-inch screen Pavilion dv1000 and Presario v2000 notebooks that have been very popular with consumers. These new releases will now give buyers the choice of a slightly larger notebook and newer processors. It's a shame that HP has not included a dedicated graphics processor, but other than that the specs look nice and the prices should be pretty good on these notebooks.

VERY nice. I've always liked the styling of the dv1000, and now it has a big brother! Truth be told, I've never taken any particular liking to the Compaq notebooks, but the v4000 just looks really... really stylish.
btw, are these laptops sold with giant "www.NotebookReview.com" stickers on them? [ ]

too bad it comes with intergrated graphics [V]

it costs extra for the giant notebookreview.com stickers on them, worth every penny i'd say though [ ]
yeah, it is kinda sad that the graphics will be integrated, i guess HP figures gamers should look to their "z" line of notebooks for graphics and gaming.

I hope that they change the outer finish of the DV4000 to match the more durable interior to make it scratch resistant. I noticed a couple of small scratches in just the week that I had the DV1000.
I hope they improve the design of the directional buttons on the DV4000, also.

I can't wait for the zv6000 article.

Wow, thats a setback, the dv4000 only has integrated graphics. [ ]

Perhaps this will be an interesting poll in HP & Compaq forum, but I still don't understand why HP want to produce two very similar machines rather than just making one that has a customizable exterior? Dell has 8 laptops in their line-up and that line-up goes down to 12.1" while HP+Compaq have 10 but nothing smaller than 14". It could probably save them some by streamlining their production line and reducing the needed overhead for displaying different models in retail chain.

The compaq design looks really awesome.
I just wish they could have included a graphics card with it. I like the sleek design and almost bought the smaller one but I need a little bit of 3-d design work and the integrated just wont cut it.
Also, the thickness is important as I am coming from an old IBM laptop that is like 2.25" - and 1.3 for this seems thicker than the 1.1 of the newer business ones. -
Regarding the issue of why they released two models that are basically the same except for the exterior, two possibilities come to mind: perhaps they're moving towards converging the two companies, so they're releasing two computers with similar specs to see what type of exterior customers prefer. On the other hand, they could just be trying to reach out to a larger customer base with different design tastes while saving money by making the two basically the same computer.

but, you know. most consumers don't know about "ODM" or anything like that. hpcompaq benefits from a duality in brand recognition. i would imagine this is advantageous of moving more product into the hands of consumers that purchase machines at best buy and circuit city. i mean, you see an averatec sitting between an hp and a compaq with different prices. you notice that you have no idea what an "AMD" is... and this high school kid in a red polo really wants you to have insurance. what do you do?

I'm less concerned with gaming and more concerned with future Longhorn compatibility. I don't know if these integrated graphics are gonna cut it.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Integrated graphics!? Boo! Hiss! Now, does the DV4000 have the media buttons above the keyboard that the DV1000 does? I can't see them on the picture.
-
I hope it is still light and comfortably under 6lbs.

Well, I know they may want to keep the tag "Compaq" on their laptops. What I don't understand is why they have to be different at all (all the components and functionality are the same) with the exception of exterior.
Take the DV4000 and V4000 as an example, they are nearly identical (even in their names), but they still have minor differences in additional to the obvious external paint job (or case design). They could use the exact same touchpad and save some logistic cost right there. By the same token, they can really make everything else exactly the same. The only difference will be paint job (or even better, customizable shells) with standard Compaq comes in silver-white and HP comes in black (or Compaq has the customizable exterior while the HP just has the standard business black).
For the computer literate, this move will not change anything they feel about HP because they already know that both are almost exactly the same under the skin. For the computer illiterate, they will still see the obvious difference externally and recognize the Compaq and HP stensiled on the laptops.
Another approach will be to really separate the two lines, like all Compaq are P-4 and AMD processors and HP use P-M, or Compaq focus on 15" or above and HP focus on 15" or below, or Compaq are all wide screens and HP are standard, etc. In any event, they will increase the commonality under the skin. Eventually, they could be merge into one simple HP line.

Just how hard is it to install a discete graphics card? Or is it just not possible in a notebook?
-
Not possible.
-
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHEN THE DV4000 WILL BE AVAILABLE TO BUY?
-
these machines are finally available on the hp website.
-
Also available at costco.com.
-
NO XP PRO on the COMPAQ V4000, but you can get it on the HP DV4000?
Does that make sense? I called HP Shopping and they said that's how it is right now. Seems a little backwards... -
its all about making more money.
i mean, if ford could sell its cars with a porch body, it would.
and that ***** who made the move to acquire compaq, was fired. Replaced by a man.
HP had a meeting like, wtf was this ***** thinking.
But thats just my theory.
Here are my feedbacks.

THis site should provide usefull and accurate info. The HP DV4000 is not a true sonoma based system. It does not suport the 533 FSB.
and its does not come with the DDR2 SDRAM.

My daughter is heading off to college this summer and we are in the market for a laptop for her. She is planning on pursuing an architecture degree and they recommend a separate, dedicated video card. We really like the features and price of the Pavilion dv4030, but it has the integrated video. We are wondering if she will really need the dedicated video card. The software that they us is Autocad, and per their website, there is no requirement for dedicated video.
What do you all think? The alternative is to go with the Dell Inspiron 6000 which can be configured with a dedicated video card. Thanks for any input.
