HP had their upcoming Pavilion dv2800t on display at CES tonight. The dv2800t features a design from a young artist in Portugal that won an MTV contest sponsored by HP to come up with a unique laptop design dubbed "Asian Odyssey".

its a pretty cool lappy for home users
-
And crazy Japanese fangirls.

do you think so?
I much prefer a typical black HP(like business series of their lappies or Think-pad design) , I like their DV2626T model ,with T7500 ,2gb ram, 250hdd and nVIDIA GF8400GT(256 of memory), I may replace my Acer 4920G with the HP since the Acer has serious issue that I found last night (the cooling fan is so capricous , some times not working and the notebook body gets so so so hot).
I was so excited about the Acer and its price , but I think there is no free lunch, I will pay a bit more and replace it with other brands since there are so many problems with this laptop that I could not find out before.
Any way, after playing with a few new HPs , I changed my opinion about Pavillions and I think these models are cheap for what you get, and the design was not bad and their build quality was quaite good.
I am surprised. -
I think the design is over-the-top. HP might as well start allowing custom paintings. They already partnered with Skinit for skins, why not move to allowing custom designs painted directly on the laptop? Price would be outrageous though.
-
They look so awesome... Also the theme is balanced between Korea, Japan and China, so Asians wouldn't say "you are racist, HP" even as a joke.
-
HP should focus more on improving the quality instead of making more eye candy.
-
The design is nice though I still perfer a black "business" desgin.
I wonder how well the desgin on the palm rests will hold up after awhile? -
How long are they going to milk that chassis?
They can paint it all they want, but jeez, it's getting old. -
Yeah. Makes me glad to own thinkpads
interesting designs though -

I see this only as a good thing. While I agree that the current chassis HP is using is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, let's be realistic here: it would be really nice if not every laptop looked like...well...a laptop. Business black is nice and understated, but some of us do want our stuff to pop.
Even if this unit doesn't wind up being that popular (which I doubt), I appreciate the fact that HP keeps electing to try and make their laptops more pleasing to look at.
I gotta be honest here: part of the reason I picked up an HP instead of a great deal on a local ThinkPad was that I just plain don't like how the ThinkPad looks. And while that may seem silly to you, remember this: you DO have to look at it every time you use it. If your computer is unappealing, how often are you gonna want to use it? -
Personal thoughts can be different among us, but for me, dv2800's design is very amazing.
The reason why laptop skin manufacturers grow a lot nowadays, because we want our notebook looks more stylish besides for protection.
This Pavillion dv2800's stylishness factor is second to none... -
Needs better design.
-
I guess it all comes down to personal preference, but yeah, I can't imagine owning this laptop. I can imagine other people gawking at it when they spot it at their local Starbucks, though. But me, nah, no thanks. I do appreciate the effort in making these "unique" [in the sense that it doesn't look like your typical laptop] designs on laptops, though. It's a whole different market, sort of.
-
Wow, that looks hot. How coool would it be if they let people upload pictures while ordering and print them on the lid
-
I'm positive -
that might be the most hideous laptop i've ever seen lol
-
But seriously I think they overdid the design. I much prefer the plain but not dull look of a thinkpad or other business notebooks. Moreover, I doubt there's hardware power to match the eye-catching design. It's probably going to be the same spec as the typical hp laptop you could get in a store except for the skin.
edit: actually it might not be a bad idea to use it in a starbucks. Why? Since notebook theft is quite rampant in starbucks, a stolen "asian odessey" laptop would be very noticeable if used in public places. -

"It's a super advanced laptop... probably Japanese." -
Very cool design, though I'd be afraid it would get "old" after a while. Besides, it's a bit "girly" for me, and it needs a better GPU. I believe that specs should come first, then style. Specs over style.
On a side note, I briefly try designing my own notebook lid using MS paint. I tried to go with an HP logo pattern. Needless to say, that didn't work out too well... (I can't draw worth a crap) -
Ugh. It looks way, way too busy for my tastes. Okay, the artist is talented, no doubt about that. But, for a laptop, its all too much. The design is clearly for those who desire attention, because its all very "Look at me!!"
The owner, I think, would get bored with it, day in and day out. Unlike, say, a solid color from Dell, there's absolutely *no* option to skin that or do anything to modify it, if one desired to somewhere along the way.
The touchpad area is only the part of the design I like. Its more simple, yet still beautiful. -
so this model will be sporting the penryn updates eh...spring 2008..thats from march to may, right? hope they release a dv2800t without they asian odyssey design...
-
Wow, thats....different. I can't say that its all to my taste, but damn, that'll get a second glance from just about anyone.
-
Id hit it. I mean.... id buy it. XD
-
Its alright. This would most likely be a special edition. I hope they dont offer this as the regular version. Somehow I liked how they began the imprint design with subdued textures which was pretty good. But I would rather have a improved innovative system rather than just a new imprint scheme.

hp's website states that it will be out in february 2008

Hello all... Does anybody know the release date for this laptop? Amazon has a pre-configured one for 999$ and it's available for preorder, but doesn't state a release date. I've looked around HP's website and I found an "Estimated build date: March 28, 2008", but I'm not sure if that's a release date.
Also, is it going to be possible to downgrade it to windows XP? HP's website has drivers for windows XP for the DV28000 series, will they work on this laptop or is it a special edition with different components and drivers?
I'm really interested in it, not for the design; it has the best features for a 1000$ laptop (the one that Amazon sells).
