Is there some rule that Pavilions just cannot have a pointstick? Even though we'd be using this beast on our desk with a mouse most of the time, a pointing stick (in addition to the touchpad) would help for the other times...
I was confused about the configurator, too. I assume the optical drive bay is modular, and that both hard drives are easily field replaceable?
JerryJ / Andrew, your Everest results list the unit as having a Hitachi 100GB SATA HDD, a Seagate 100GB IDE HDD, and a Toshiba HD DVD / DVD-RW optical drive? That's interesting, are they using a RAID 1 mirror composed of different-spec drives?
Anyways, I also would prefer 7200RPM drives...
Great first look review BTW!

im gonna use this notebook to take notes in class
-
this notebook... for the size and weight i belive we should be calling it an "advanced electronic brick"... notebooks don't weigh 20 pounds
awesome machine tho... it'll be exciting to see what hp pulls out in the next couple years...
for now i'm going to consider this candy for the "nerds"
its too advanced and high end for todays average users... but all the middle age nerds out there will be glad to throw down the $ and lug this highly advanced grafitti encased electronic brick around
hp definitely made this one for the power hungry geeks out there -
So, is it a "laptop" . . . a "notebook" . . . a "textbook" . . . a "brick" . . . a "hybrid (desktop/notebook)" . . . a "portable" . . . or . . . a "luggable"?
Who will be the first to make a backpack carrying case for the HDX?
I any case, can't wait till the options increase and the price goes down to get one myself . . . maybe a year or so?
-
lol, that thing is massive. id like to see some comparison pics with the x61 haha.
Performance looks great, and the screen seems awesome. I guess it can satisfy a lot of college students who want a full size computer but who also want to bring it home once in a while (clearly that is doable). -
Man, too bad, 4000+ dollars and no DVI port. VGA is good....but no DVI is disappointing.
-
1 Word:
"Nice!" -
-
OMGF
all i can say -
EDIT: thanks to Wu-Jen, i have found an article, and yes the drivers are ready http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/notebooks/download.cfm?ProductType=9260 -
This laptop looks tasty.
-
And this machine is a beast, just too bad there's still no dx10 card with a 256-bit memory bus since the 128-bit bus seems to decrease performance quite a bit, especially at higher resolutions and with lots of goodies turned on. -
incase you guys didnt kno, even tho there is a thread on this, being a student gets you 6% off the HDX price
i customized an x7800 Extreme/HD2600xt/2gig Ram/Vista Ultimate
at 3,400 after the discount, not bad at all! -
While the ATI HD2600 XT looks good in the 3D marks , like Chaz said it is probably not one of the best cards for gaming .
For this size ( and price ) I'd expect a much better card and maybe even an SLI option .
Other then that it looks very nice , if they could fit this design ( 2xHD + sub + 4 speakers ) in a 17" form with a better card and maybe a LED screen I'd buy it for sure . -
yea... i agree, i think this things is designed beautifully, especially the screen and the way it flips up, but how could 17" fit dual GPUs and this not :/ im prolly gettin sumtin with Sli, altho again, this is one HELL of a machine lol and i envy any1 who i see with this in college!
-
It would be much cheaper to build a desktop with similar features, but this thing is a monster "notebook." Very cool.
-
SHame there's no crossfire configuration.
MIght have passed it going through, but how do you get the laptops? Does HP supply it to you? -
As amazing as those specs are, at that point it really is kind of defeating the purpose of a "lap"-top in my opinion.
-
I don't really think any laptop was meant to be used on a lap. Poor ventalation. lol
-
15.5 pounds. My nx9420 is about 8 pounds. So only about 2 times as much as a lightweight 17 incher? Not bad. They need to redesign the hinge on the lid though. Make it look nicer (because when I first looked at it I'm like what is that thing???).
-
The next HDX will probably have a defibrillator.
-
It looks like Andrew has some competition with the videos.......
-
Starting price is 2200+ and comes with 512 hd 2600XT
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ame=HDX_series&a1=Usage&v1=Extreme+Multimedia
Enjoy -
Actually the lowest starting price I see is $2,819.99 [HP's Academic Purchase Program] - that would be US Dollars.
Also, this topic has already been posted.
HP HDX is Out... 1 of several very similar threads. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
that. is. insanely. expensive. (for what it is)
-
blue ray thats why.

Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
WOW! I hope I saved enough money to buy that monster notebook...
-
-
i was on that site two nites ago it was starting at 2700!... wtf... they keep raising it!!
-
well i think they know it irritates you now doodles, and we all know there out to get you
-
I am not a buyer here and nor are many others. Giving that the technology/price curve discounts itself at about 15-20% a month. Maybe I will looking at this in two months. It way over priced as it stands.
Fully decked out, I came $5,800 w/o tax.
I will be looking at this or a competitor in two/three months for half the price.
Want 1920x1200, less expesive quad core ($200 vs. $780), better video card, 1000 mhz ram, 7,200-10,000 rpm drives 400/400....
Handle and maybe slip on case is required as well.
Maybe Acer will step it up first... -
to grim..., id also be looking for dual GPUs, SLi or maybe crossfire? ud think that'd be fine for a 20 incher -
I think the video card is good, but a little short of driving 1920x1200 at a good speed...I think dual video cards are on the way out...JMO...I think the new cards...with having more ram...being able to acees more ram (In this case 2GB)...256 will do just fine...
The technolody outside of Video cards/drivers is actually way ahead of the curve and that kills price fast as well. For Example Storage & router technology is less than 1% of the cost seven years ago.
EG. The new platforms run 32/64 and DX10. I think into next and maybe the next three-four years any machine that can handle this reliably and be useful (this the key) will do fine for anyone.
I think majority of software will be written for Win 2000 & XP (that is where the users are at) 16/32/64. Frankly, having Word and Excel in 64-bit does not make me work or think any faster. I also think good new major software will be written to accomadate all setups and will auto select the best performance for your setup. I sure do not want deal with it...
No one wants to buy a hardware or software (time, money, frustration) headache, must less a very expensive depreciating headache. Eg. Vista, last year. I think it's coming into it's own, but I am still not exicited about it...It's more of upgrade to stay with the curve as it maturates into the market... -
One other item. I am looking at reaplacing my two desktop Dells, both Pentiums... Tired of being stuck in the office and I will just connect to my 1080P WEGA (three video chip) 60" Sony. Eventually getting rid of two wasted office rooms and be able to connect where there is Wifi and get a tan at the local coffee shop while working...Need everything sync right...to be useful.
I only want to do it once for the next four years...
The other thing that irritates me as a consumer...is product cycle...I sure do not want to play at my expense and frustration to be the gennea pig or beta test something...I think my next laptop will replace the dvd/HD DVD/Blue Ray/Comcast HD DVR, Hollywood Video, etc.. blau, blau, blau and we will just suck up info off the net.
The difference between digital HDMI, S-video/Optical/Analog cable in digital is significant. I have even run the 1080P as it not broadcast thru the latest Moto Box...
I think the HP HDX and Acer 9820 are preludes to next things tocome very soon.
Again, this maching is great, until you relise you can buy an Acer 9820 for $2,500 and an Alienware Entertainment system for Less. Price needs to come down about 50%. -
We want to see GPU-only 3dmark scores!!!! You guys know that the T7700 would score really hgiher than the 7300...?
I saw some games benchmarks on cnet and in games, it performs 1/2 of the Go 7900GS and less than 1/4 of the Go 7950GTX -
It's a great machine for what it IS. A MULTIMEDIA NOTEBOOK! It's meant to be used as a TV/DVR etc. Not just as a laptop. It's not a gaming notebook. It can game though! It will more than likely NEVER get SLI. It's not that kind of notebook. I almost went with this notebook over my current one. It's a great machine! Thanks for the great review!
-
that is so awesome..wish i could afford it ! LOL
-
i'm not buying this till a new better model comes out. In UK, the only model offered is T7500, 400GB 4200RPM (SLOW!!), HD DVD and ATi 2600XT. No Blu-ray and nVIDIA, and I want minimum of T7700.
Apparently, it seems to me that the british enjoyed it in high-street shop earlier than american (only available for customisation)

BTW, good review. I like the photos. Waiting for some more -
-
Fedex tried delivering my HDX today but I wasn't home. I will pick it up in the morning. That shipped much faster than expected.
-
Acer 9820 20.1" is now $1974 123BuyDirect.com. w/ no sales tax.
I like HP more. Comes with tax, as it is in my state.
The question remains...
How more clams is it worth?
10% premium?
Certainly not a 80-100% premium.
The new Toshiba 17" 1920x1280 is looking interesting too at $3,100. -
