HP has such a stranglehold on the notebook market right now that their biggest competition for sales is against themselves.

That really depends on which notebook market you're talking about (both in terms of product category and region/country).

True, HP is a massive, dominating force in the global PC market. Still, I'd debate whether we can truthfully say HP has a "stranglehold" on the worldwide PC market.

I think for the average consumer, i.e. non-gamer or enthusiast, the term applies.

Did this just come out? I just played with the HP G42t at Costco this morning. 14" widescreen and the etch-design was very nice. It was extremely light weight. However, I didn't like the keyboard layout.

I have yet to see one of these in person; the design is very Envy-like and certainly improved over the older G60 series. I believe this is their first 14-inch budget notebook.

Customization gets expensive though. The base configuration is a good deal.

Aylafan, u say u checked one out at a Costco? How was the build quality? Keyboard/touchpad?

I really like the look of this guy. It seems like a nice, no frills 14". I've demoed a few of the older G series at my local staples, and they struck me as pretty nice budget notebooks. Decent Altec Speakers, nice feel on the track pad, sturdy AC jack.

I've had trouble finding these listed on any of the brick and mortar websites. I'd like to try one in store before i make any decisions.

Also, anyone know if the g42t is available in black? I swear i saw a screen shot or a spec list with a black option, but its not listed when u build one on HPs site.

Anyway...anyone with info on this thing chime in...im kind of intrigued

    thanks

At the moment the G42t is available in the following colors:
    biscotti
    silver
    shell white

I haven't seen any of the new G-series available in black.

These new G-series appear to have stepped up the game compared to the old ones, and I agree that the old series was a decent budget notebook. I haven't seen one in person yet, though.

Stopped in a Costco the other day to get a look at one of these. The only thing they had on display was the g62t (15 inch variety). Looked really nice though. Build seemed very solid...was pretty slick/thin...really like the textured styling on the exterior...its the polar opposite of the glossy fingerprint magnet stuff from the last gen HPs and some of the current Dells.

Liked the trackpad, but it used a single button design. Slightly hard to push, but not too bad. I think i could get used to it. Keyboard was solid...negligible flex. Didn't get a chance to test the speakers, but i think alot of the HPs usually come with decent Altecs.

    Just a good lookin laptop.

The base configed 14" i3 version for 549 seems like a really nice value for someone lookin for a budget-ish midrange machine.

I'm kinda psyched about this one...its really caught my eye lately. I feel like its not gettin enough play on here.

yeah, it's been hard to find information about this online or on youtube. Dollar for dollar, i think this offers good if not better value than the DM4, which is better for gamers. It's also lighter, but this is $180 lighter on the wallet (comparing the i3 G62 base model with the i5 DM4 base model) and 4.85lbs is not too much of a tradeoff given the slim profile and MBP-styling.

HP's done pretty well for its 2010 lineup.....I'll still wait a year and see how these machines are holding up durability wise before buying from HP though....they have the worst failure rate among ALL manufacturers. Hopefully they've switched to another ODM for their 2010 models.

Have just seen an HP G42T (G42-464TX) for a very decent price. i5-480M, 4GB RAM, 15.6" screen & ATI HD 6370 GPU. Haven't been able to find any reviews for this series - anyone know what their build quality is like?

Was set on getting Asus's U35JC, but if I can get something a bit more powerful (gfx-wise), with a bigger screen, plus an optical drive, for a little extra, then i'm def. interested.

    Cheers.
