HP has had an iffy time of it, trying to make it in the tablet world. Anyone with more than a passing familiarity with technology knows the sordid tale. Boy meets girl, and after a whirlwind romance, girl acquires boy for $1.2 billion. Girl's father decides that boy is not quite the dashing young opportunity he thought, and casts the relationship aside in a fit of pique.

    First thoughts
-Fanless. Probably used as a euphemism for low performance. Anyways, Windows 8 isn't too bad on Atom, but it would have been nice to see an AMD E/Z series or ULV Corei.
-Battery life. I would expect it to be pretty good. It's a 3.1lbs 11 inch device, which means the battery should be a decent size (or that HP went overboard with metal, but hopefully its the former), and Atom is also great for battery life. All day is probably still out of reach though, even ARM tablets fall short of worry free all day battery life if you use them as primary devices.
-Battery drain method. This concerns me, the keyboard half is going to have its battery near fully discharged often. This makes batteries degrade faster.
-Hinge reminds me a lot of the Sony Z.

why can't HP build it with a matte screen?? that's probably my only complaint about it. good stuff though!

It's probably the Gorilla Glass on the screen that makes it reflective would be my guess. It looks like it does have some nifty features. I guess we'll see about the performance and other details.

Touchscreens get dirty quick. Glossy is sooooo much easier to clean than matte. Dirt and oil would get stuck between the "bumps" of a matte screen. And with daily wipings-down over the course of a year or so, isn't there a risk you could actually rub smooth spots into your matte screen?

Glossy + gorilla glass is the way to go for touchscreen devices in my opinion.

Just watched the video preview start to finish. This thing looks FANTASTIC. I've historically not been an HP guy, but this looks like the nicest convertible tablet out there right now. Should seriously undercut the Vaio Duo 11 on price (Atom and 720p) while still delivering a pleasant audiovideo experience (IPS display, Beats audio) and a roomy 11.6" screen. Offers a lot more subjective appeal than the practical-but-dull Thinkpad Tablet 2. Offers more practicality than the Surface RT (x86 and a lap-friendly keyboard dock) and immediate availability unlike the Surface Pro.

My only gripe, and it's a minor one, is that I wish HP had a more unique and distinctive hardware style. This, like a lot of Envy products, feels a bit derivative of Cupertino's styling.

If HP can sell this for $750, give or take, they've got a customer.

Anyone want to speculate on price? If the Samsung Ativ Smart PC (Atom) is $649 without the keyboard dock and $749 with keyboard dock (I thought that was officially announced), I'm betting/hoping that this will be $799-$849 with the keyboard dock as standard equipment.

The 799 price point sounds about right to me. The price tag IS mighty steep but that's the price you pay for the performance, materials, etc.

It's easier to swallow if there's 64 gb of storage standard and the keyboard dock standard. After the initial sticker shock (based on very low "starting-at" prices for non-comparable-spec devices), it's pretty fair. For example, while the iPad 3 "starts at" 499, a 64-gb iPad plus an Apple wireless keyboard for it costs $768 total.

I have one of these and it is a great unit except for one issue. As mentioned the keyboard battery drains first. The problem is that it keeps trying to charge the tablet even when off and the tablet is at 100% so the keyboard battery just drains itself for no reason. If stored apart it doesn't happen. Hopeful that HP fixes this in a firmware update. BTW @ around $525 on sale it is pretty sweet.
