Looks like HP did not address heat issues and short battery life in the new ENVY. 3D is a nice addition, but I guess the majority are more concerned with the two other problems, more important purchase determinants.

I was wondering about the heat issues as well ... pity to see no change. :(

Of course, they are. If you ask me, 3D is a gimmick.

If the display is 400nits as I have read in some places, wouldn't that make it worthwhile compared to the usual Envy 17?

Given that you can practically cook eggs on the standard E17... yeah, no thanks. They really need to do something about that. :(

What Im really waiting for is for them to bring back the Radiance display. I was about to buy an Envy last week but the lack of Radiance display stopped me.
Also, I might wait for Sandy Bridge to come out.

The Radiance manufacturer went out of business. I am surprised by the number of people unwilling to buy an Envy over this.

Ignoring heat issues are HP's forte even in their premium line. Nothing new here.

indeed it is, but it will be GREAT for PC gaming. in fact, it's perfect for that application.

Mmm, it is and it isn't.

Here's our review of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d, which has a 3D screen:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5855&review=lenovo+ideapad+y560d+3d+notebook
Check out the Screen and 3D section halfway down the page. I got a headache after playing games for 20 minutes or so. Another NBR editor said it was the worst screen he'd ever used and couldn't even look at it in 3D mode.

Once they get rid of the glasses, 3D might be more interesting. Right now I'm going to agree that it is largely a gimmick. I think this part is especially important (from the Y560d review):
Additionally, a lot of industry reports have been trickling out -- 3D is not selling all that well. Adoption is rather lackluster.

3D is a gimmick. It's not enough to buy something new, especially if it has worse performance in some areas. Not to mention that you know that DRM is going to be even worse as the formats proceed, causing various incompatibility issues...

And now we know why the Alienware M17x weights so much more than the HP Envy 17. It all comes down to cooling. You need the mass to dissipate heat.

When it comes down to it, the Envy 17 is something of a Pavilion with a huge price tag. It's not a full fledged Alienware competitor.

Linuxwanabe, I don't think it's fair to say the Envy17 is just a Pavilion with a huge price tag. Let's take an honest look at the hardware. It's pretty damned sweet. It is not as geared toward gaming as an Alienware, no. I didn't look at it as a full-fledged Alienware competitor. I think the Envy has broader appeal.

Agreed. The Envy is billed as a high-end multimedia notebook and is priced/spec'd/designed accordingly. Alienware notebooks are specialized towards gaming.
It's a shame HP buried Voodoo and didn't grow/expand the company like Dell did with Alienware.

In addition, it got 5850 GPU instead of 5870.

I think a 3D Pavilion would detract from the speciality of the Envy.
