    Hi Greg,

I was just wondering if you still have the modded INF you used to install Ur video drivers so that it installed as 8700 GT and if it is possible for you to post it here

    Thanks

I had a 8510p and i downloaded the 7.10 drivers and the mobility modder and followed the directions to the t and i couldnt get them to work idk. but is it basically the same process downloading a mod tool and converting the drivers before installing? any help would be appreciated. Also great review greg

Thanks Greg for a very thorough input. I 've recently bought an hp8710p 2.2 2GB 160 and of course quandro ns320. XP PRO SP2

    But I have 2 questions.

    1. Because I run a lot of virtual machines (sometimes 3 at a time) I need ram. If I buy 4GB will I have a problem with the windows ? Will the XP Pro see all of it or its a waste of money.

    2. I've read that with an alternate nVidia Inf parameter I can see the VGA as 8700GT is it true ? If so how can I do it.

I know that what I ask may all ready been answered if thats the case, sorry.

    Thanks in advance

I hope someday HP will add an Expresscard clot and an option to add a second harddisk to this notebook. That would make it the perfect notebook in my opinion.

For everything that is in the notebook, I doubt that we'll see a 2nd drive anytime soon. Its pretty cramped in there, but maybe it could happen.

As for the EC dock, a LOT of businesses still use PCMCIA cards and that is why this notebook has it. However, the Advanced Docking Station for the 8710p does have an express card/54 slot.

    1) Windows will not see 4GB of RAM, period. See the RAM Deals thread though, as 3GB or 4GB is pretty cheap.
    2) Yes it is true. I'll have to find my old guide for it, if not I'll make the guide again.

Is the screen protected by a metal housing ? Is the lid of metal ?

Greg, I'm assuming that your 3dMark06 score was ~4700, as reported in this other review, for instance.

I have an HP 8710p (WinXP SP3, T8100, WSXGA+) ... just recently install NWN2, and was really disappointed in the performance. I downloaded and ran 3dmark06, and got a terribly disappointing score of 2182 ?!?! (test conducted in 1280x1024 rez, that & all other settings at the default)

Here's the URL to my 3dmark06 report:
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7331000

This is the oem config (standard NVS video driver, etc); the 3dmark06 configuration I used was the default one, identical to that used in your review:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=27806

Any advice re: why my laptop gives such a terrible showing would be much appreciated - thank you!

Do you have the link to that guide (modding INF to allow 8700GT driver on 8710p) handy? I might try the 8700GT driver, to see if it makes any difference - seems unlikely, though, that it'd net me a gain of 2500 3dmark06 points

Yes, it can pass audio through HDMI. You probably have to setup this manually in the audio preferences that you want to use the S/PDIF output instead (which is the HDMI output).

If you're looking for XP drivers, just go to HP website and download them.

Indeed a very nice machine. Got mine yesterday.

    4300 points in 3d marks 06

!!! but rudiculously low performance in crysis
    no mods, everything stock

    C2D T7500 2.2, 4GB @ 677, 250GB @ 5400RPM (Seagate)

any advice besides 8700 GT drivers? I'm just afraid that they will decreace the stability and more importantly the autonomy of the system. This card is kind of "business" so it's likely designed for less power consumption

maybe some OC program to fine tune?

!!! # 2 btw. the 1680x1050 screen is really sharp, but the brightness & saturation are both low. how can I tweak these two?

    thanx.

!!! # 3 the last question to the owners:
i've got LOTS of processes running. lightscribe, touchpad, HP security, HP guard, HP kill em all... + dozens.
    all these are stock

which of them can I safely turn off to gain more performance?
can any1 give me the list of processes... 2 lists:
    1. things I need:
    -
    -
    -

    2. things I kill:
    -
    -
    -
    -

huge thanx to all who replies

First function and F11 is the ambiant light sensor, and you can further tweak the setting's in the nvidia control panel.

I clean installed and got rid of hp security and lightscribe as i wont use it it's for etching discs and kept driveguard and quicklaunch buttons thats all I can think of now. Any other questions feel free to ask or PM. One thing you might wanna do is undervolt that t7500 with Rightmark cpu monitor as i had a t7500 in mine and it helped cool the lappy down alot and helped keep the fan from ramping up to warp speed. ;)

OK. I really like this machine. BUT. Still gets hot, and AC adapter is well. The latter is actually barely touchable. Of course it's a powerful horse, but i'm afraid it's gonna melt :(
All reviews mentioned considerably lower temps.
What are the maximum operating temperatures for power supply, HDD, videocard & cpu for 8710p?
    1. What are the proper figures for undervolting the T7500 processor?
    2. Can it be that geforce drivers make qaddro hotter than normal?

Maybe Spanish version of the notebook has the conflict with russian electricity network? All figures on AC adapter are OK AFAIK.

P.S. All vent shafts are open, room temp is 20C.
    What the hell :(

Cooling FAN is always on, and with high RPM.

GPU temperature in Idle is 55-58 deg. C.
CPU temperature is around 33 deg. C (downing it with RightMark CPU Clock)

However, the FAN is working on high RPM almoustly all the time.

    OK. Thanx 4 the info!
I guess you didn't switch from HP's drivers to 8700 modded drivers?
Cuz when I switched back to HP it stopped overheating.

BTW Guys, 8710p & other HP owners.
Who of you downgraded from Vista to XP?
I actually like the idea, but I've never downgraded the OS be4.
