The HP Compaq 6515b was recently released as a 14.1" AMD processor based business notebook with the budget conscious in mind. But it turns out that budget doesn't equate to poor build as you would expect, following is a review of this cost effective and well-rounded notebook.

A nice review and a interesting notebook.
I suppose it's quite similar to Pavillion dv2000 (apart from different chipset)
But 3DMark score is lower than spected (while better than intel GMA950 or older ATI 200). In Samsung R20 thread a better 3dMark score were reported

nice review
thanks! for the job well done
nice overall machine.but im sure its not going to win many customers with beauty though guess its strong points are the feature is to price ratio coupled with the business class chassis -
What about maximum RAM we get ? 4 GB or 2 GB ? Because i am a programmer, i need big RAM in Vista OS. In some Acer model, we get RAM 4 GB max.
I am sorry if myenglish is bad. -
I imagine it has an maximum of 4gb, with the model reviewed here with 2gb of RAM.
Excellent review. I for one, appreciate the aesthetics HP has for their business line. The Turion X2, is still no slouch, even though the Core 2 Duos defeat them performance-wise. The 3 hour 15 min battery life is very good, and leaves a lot of room for improvement, considering how some Turion X2s can be aggressively undervolted. -
specs don't differ much from HP 6715S/HP 6715B, the only difference being 15.4" on the 6715 series...

The HP 2.16 T2400 bandit strikes again!
Seriously, I believe that it should be a 2.16GHz T7400 in the Super Pi table. -

Thanks for all the comment. I too, as I said, like the look of this notebook, but obviously everyone's a little different. Just like cars and clothes, I guess. The maximum RAM is 4GB, as noted. And yes, the 59 seconds came from a T7400.
As is kind of obvious, one of the things I found most interesting was the good performance together with the somewhat low Super PI and PCMark05 scores. Using the 6515b for a couple of weeks had me thinking that the benchmarks don't always tell the whole story. The 6515b was consistently snappy, no matter what I was doing.
I always try to take into account the machine's target market, and everything taken together - performance, battery life, build quality, LCD, etc. - left me thinking the 6515b is a pretty good candidate for general business use.
I've now reviewed a couple of HPs, both consumer and business, and they seem to do an excellent job of zeroing in on particular market segments. -
Great review! I expected some slightly higher scores from the gpu though.

Now, when the hell is HP going to scrap their crappy dv2000 lines and put these AMD/ati chipsets in there instead?
I want this exact machine, but configurable to a consumer line (smaller HDD, more Ram, Vista Premium instead of business, and whatever else I want) -
What kind of CPUs this notebook have? I mean are CPUs produced in 65nm technology?
I am looking to purchase HP Compaq 6715s Business Notebook PC (RU655EA) but only if it have an 65nm CPU inside. Now HP sales person from HP UK told me that it have 65nm CPU. Today i talked with another sales person from HP UK and she didnt know. Folks from HP USA didnt know as well so i was considering to ask someone who already bought this notebooks -
If I may, whats the reason on buying based on the manufacturing process. The Turions are manufactured on a pretty mature 90nm process and so power consumption/heat output levels are pretty much very similar to other regular 65nm cpu's. -
Well they produce less heat and they spend less power or they should be. And smaller manufacturing process should allows biger fequencies. When I saw this notebook it seems like the new AMD mobile platform. Also serbian website (benchmark.co.yu) yesterday reported that AMD was shipping 65nm mobile CPUs for the past 30 days.
Miner what do you think what is best buy. M Celeron or M Sempron? I like Sempron because of posibility for downcloking itself and better chipset (graphic) but almoust anywhere i asked they recomend me a Celeron.
What do you think? -
Nice review, it is always good to hear about AMD's latest offerings.
I agree with the earlier poster about wanting this chipset in the consumer line. Add an ATI discrete graphics option (ie. X1400) and I'm there, it would make a great budget solution that can play around with some minor 3D if needed.

Just bought the cheaper 1GB RAM + no Bluetooth + Windows XP + 1 year warranty config from Best Buy and I must say I'm most impressed. Design-wise it's classy without being all over the top (aka "steal me'); screen quality, just bright+sharp enough to be comfortable for the eyes. Considering I only payed $849 Canadian (w/ taxes) for the computer, I can't possibly be anymore happier about my purchase.
Just one thing I'd like to note about your review - are you sure you have a X1270 in your laptop? Both Catalyst Control Centre and System Properties state my notebook to only have a X1250.
