Google is planning further integration between Google+ and Gmail, along with a business edition of its emerging social networking service, two moves that could give Google's lineup a big leg-up against Facebook, Twitter, and even cloud-based office suites such as Microsoft's Office 365.

But Facebook has a big leg up on Google because of the number of Facebook users. Google may impact the business market but Facebook will still dominate the home pc user. That may be a good thing as some corporations discourage Facebook use because it's labeled as a social network.

Social Networking tools, no matter how good, are still at the mercy of one common factor: people. Their whole business depends on people. You could have the best product out there, but if nobody wants to join, there's no incentive to.

I remember when I was first asked to join Facebook and I asked what it was and the only answer I got was "well everyone has one!".

Sums up social networking in one sentence IMO ;)

The only reason I got/have a Facebook is because it's convenient, because nearly everyone I interact with has one. Google+ hasn't been adopted widely, and those who use it still have a FB, so as of now, it's useless to me. I'll get one later, if or when it is adopted even more widely than FB.

as long as google doesn't force it upon gmail users, i see no problems with them implementing it...but as stated by others, it's getting kind of tiresome to keep up with so many "social" networking sites, let alone be active and maintain them/update them regularly.
