This is great news, though it's sure to face ALOT of competition from Windows 7. Even with Microsoft limping through Vista, it maintained a dominant marketshare despite competing offerings from different directions. How would Chrome do against a standing Windows 7?

LOL...I like the sound of that...that made me laugh. :D They sure did limp through Vista all right. An injured OS indeed.

Anyhow, at the matter at hand; As i've stated in another thread my first impression when I heard the news was this would be a major Fail, but when actually read the details on the upcoming Google OS I think it might just end up being the future of OSs.

I guess we'll all see how it goes.....

Google would probably make it efficient and cool looking. At least I hope they do. Someone does.

I'm looking forward to this although I don't understand the concept of the web browser as the OS or something like that.

I think the concept is to make it as simple as possible, meaning starts up quick and boots up minimal things so that you can be 'on the web' in a short amount of time.

yeah but this is more of the cloud base variety. I am really interested in trying this out to supplement windows 7 on my machine.

I would like if google start they own linux distribution...

It would be become a standard in linux what we REALLY (and I'm linux user since slackware 3 lol).

Options r good but when you have 300 package systems, 300 window managers, and 300 shells things become a little tricky and the efforts in coding being centralized would be much better :p .

Is this new OS just a lightweight variation of Linux or it is really new?

Then it should be called new Linux distro made by Google, not new OS, because it is not. Linus should complain that his and open source community work is used by Google commercially without proper reference.

I tend to agree with you, Google does claim they're rewriting the security aspect of the Linux OS completely, but otherwise it will be a Linux distro and not a completely new OS as you would be lead to believe.

I like a lot of what Google does, I'm a bit of a doubter on what they'll be able to accomplish with Chrome OS though, and some in the industry are calling Google's initiative here a "Folly"

They said it will be completely different from Android.

It'll be based on cloud computing with the main applications built in web programming languages. Another good writeup here [link removed by moderator]

Yeah it'll be linux based but they plan to take the way operating systems work in a completely different direction.

It's not really intended as a direct competitor yet with other major OSes, is the impression I got. More of a web-based environment, I gather. Come to think of it, that sort of fits in with Google conspiracy theories... :D
