This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    thanks for the link, that is thorough and a pretty fair assesment of extended warranties. I used to be pretty against buying a 3-year warranty for a laptop from places like BestBuy, but it makes sense for some and while it is a fat profit margin in general for these retailers, if you know you are a clutz and prone to breaking things and a warranty covers such things then you have the power of knowledege there.

    I found interesting that laptops was one of the few things that Comsumer Reports recommended buying an extended warranty for. Buying it from the maker is usually a better option in my opinion. For the second and third year, accidental/theft is a better idea but they usually make you get both. Cause after the first year you are more likely to break it than have a failure.
