2009 International CES - Gateway has debuted two new notebook lines, the 15.6-inch MD series mainstream notebook starting at $649.99 and the 13.3-inch UC series starting at $749.99.

The MD series features a 15.6-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio display with a 1366x768 resolution. It is available in two colors, burgundy and black. The MD series notebooks are available with both Intel and AMD processors (Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Athlon X2 and Turion X2), up to 500GB of hard drive space and 4GB of RAM. Graphics power comes from an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 with 512MB of video memory. An 8-cell battery is standard.

The UC series is Gateway's first notebook with a 13.3-inch display. It weighs 5.3 pounds with a 6-cell battery. Other specifications include an Intel Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2 Duo processor, slot-load DVDRW drive, and an Intel GMA X4500 integrated graphics processor.

Both notebooks are backed by a one-year limited warranty. They are available now from retailers in the U.S.

I like the UC series because it supports my opinion that there isn't a significant savings to the consumer when you put a netbook processor in a notebook sized chassis.

Compare it to the new HP Pavilion dv2 and for an extra $50 starting, and 1.5 lbs you get a screen that's an inch larger, a dvdrw, 6 cell battery and a dual core processor.

The MD series looks the same as the MC, except without the illuminated keyboard. The UC looks like a pretty nice 13" notebook with a decent specification and good price, but weighs almost five and half pounds? She's a chunky ol' gal. :(

The MD is a solid looker, but again like Dell, introducing a new laptop line with an old GPU doesn't strike me as the best of ideas....though it does help the value proposition somewhat now that I think about it :)
