Fujitsu to Sell Hard Drive Business to Toshiba
    [IMG]
Fujitsu today announced it will sell its hard drive business to Toshiba; the company has been trying to sell the business for some time. Fujitsu refused to sell the business to Western Digital after talks fell through in early January.

Fujitsu and Toshiba are expected to complete the transaction this quarter. Fujitsu's hard drive business will be spun off into a new subsidiary of Toshiba, of which Fujitsu will have a 20% stake in for an unspecified period of time. The acquisition of Fujitsu's hard drive business gives Toshiba a stronger stand in the notebook hard drive market.

Toshiba`s 2.5" HDD`s have lately seemed kind of mediocre, with Fujitsu`s MHZ2***BH and BJ series faring a bit better on the reliability side.

I guess Toshiba had the dough to put down. Maybe its the Japanese connection.

WD have a good product range at the moment whereas Toshiba are no longer one of the big 2.5" HDD names that they were 10 to 15 years ago. I suspect they could benefit from building on the recent Fujitsu products. I have used the MHZ2320BH and it is a good performer. The one weakness is that the power consumption is higher than the equivalent HDDs from the other big manufacturers.

That's rather good, one more player, more competition -->> better for consumers.
That's being said, Seagate is still number 1 :D
