    It's probably an expectations on consumers' part; we're all trained at this point to expect something new every year.
    Apple's RND budget for smartphones, like most other smartphone companies, has gone up exponentially since the release of the original iPhone. It's harder and harder to innovate. I agree with you that this year they appear to have run out of steam. The new iPhones offer almost nothing new over last years' models.
