If extreme gaming is your thing then you can't do much better than the dual NVIDIA GeForce 680M graphics cards in this beast.

I'd like to meet with Clevo's chief engineer... and whack him over the head with one of his own keyboards!

A proper keyboard layout means having isolated inverted-T cursor keys and a double-wide zero on the numpad. It's been used on other 17" notebooks for the last 8 years or so. That Clevo continues to use such a horrendous component in 2012 on a unit costing $2K+ is shameful to say the least.

Clevo really needs to fix that heatsink design, the fan does not line up with the heatsink.

That is a worthwhile conversation/debate right there. Charles is working on the latest Alienware M17X review right now so I'm eager to see what he has to say about that notebook.

As for your question, one reason a gamer "might" buy a Clevo-based notebook like this over an Alienware is that the Clevos are usually easier to upgrade/service (because they are built with resellers in mind).

That said, I prefer the build quality and AlienFX lighting on the Alienware notebooks I've owned (even if I did need to have Dell/Alienware replace the screen hinge on my M11x R1).

Current design is "new" from Clevo since 2011 after so many years of complaint from users worldwide. So the next update will be at least 5 years from now. Clevo won't listen, because they know u will buy no matter how, you don't have much choice. Alienware size is always 1" bigger than Clevo to get the similar performance.

Totally agree! The CPU temps are ridiculously high for a gaming laptop! Clevo used to offer a better cooling. If that's the best they can do now, I'm very disappointed! The M18x can be pushed past 4.5ghz on the CPU and still run cooler! :(

    Hi

about to upgrade from a silly m9750

    to m17x r4 with 4g clevo 680m

now with the Scorpius I am doubting if

the m17x and the hassle of switching to

a better 680m card is worth it

    clevo's scorpius crappy build q

is the only thing that makes

    me consider m17xr4 / clevo680m

are the scorpius heatsinks really that bad?

    suggestions ?

If you're after total power then this machine is the ticket, otherwise I like the Alienware M17x R4. It really is a fantastic gaming and multimedia platform.

Another notebook to consider is the ASUS G75, which is my favorite gaming notebook next to the M17x:
ASUS G75VW Review: The Best Mainstream Gaming Notebook Gets Better
It has a better keyboard and the fans are quieter. It doesn't have the power of the M17x though (GTX 660M/670M).

Both are going to have a huge improvement in performance over your M9750 (I remember reviewing that machine a very long time ago :) Alienware Area-51 M9750 Review), it is hard to go wrong.

scorpius locked bios could be an issue for CPU overclocking.
On the other hand, Clevo GTX 680M is not crippled like a
Dell 680M and can be overclocked a lot higher than their
Dell counterpart. I think that tips the performance balance
    in the Scorpius's favor

You should re think that line of thought pal. This thing has no hope of getting anywhere near the m18x's overclocks because of the sloppy cooling design.

I am not a big fan of the look. When I take my laptop with me, I do not like drawing attention to myself. However, if I just keep it at home, it does look amazing.

Well this is too expensive but then again more competition might lead to lower prices overall :)

Just curious why this was reviewed from Eurocom instead of somewhere like xoticpc.com? Did Eurocom release the machine with these specs earlier, or what? Building the same laptop on both sites comes out to almost $1000 cheaper on xoticpc.com.
