It's really interesting. Quite an interesting read. As a geek, I don't see that side of things very often as my computer is always mine, I never deal with the crapware that everyone else apparently does.

Thank God I didn't buy a Sony then Seriously, AOL would really be the last straw. I just detest them as an ISP so much. As for pre-loaded software, I don't mind it if it means I make a decent saving on the price of my laptop
I think a more important issue is that if the price of the OS is factored in, why Microsoft and/or the manufacturers will not give you an XP disc (I dunno what Vista is like but I presume its more of the same). You get a recovery partition that restores the crap. Such is life! -

It bugs me that a computer that I pay for comes preloaded with what is really no more than advertising for software that I'll never use (AOL, Norton, etc). I did read though that the software companies do get a high number of subscribers through being preloaded. One day I'll get around to building my own system.
I understand the reasoning - that it keeps cost down for the buyer, helping keep them affordable for more people.
It would be nice to have the option to buy a straight system for an additional fee (to offset the advertising loss).
