Alienware introduced the original M11x at CES this year with Pentium Dual-core and Core 2 Duo processors. While the notebook was originally envisioned using the slightly stronger Intel Core 2010 chips, Intel hadn't yet put these chips out on the market - and Dell wanted to get the M11x out the door in enough time for CES.

So the i5 version will be about equal to the R1 but for $150 more?

Did you mean SU7300 in the test? I dont think that the SU4100 would manage to beat the i5...

The SU4100 and SU7300 are identical chips, with the SU7300 having an extra megabyte of L2 Cache. The performance different will be very slight if any, between the two.

From the Alienware boards, it appears as if what you're paying for on the M11x-R2 are slightly higher clocks, and Optimus.

I was really hoping to play BFBC2 on the m11x R2; I guess it's time to look for alternatives.

No - the M11x chips can be overclocked, which is what happened there. Standing in the booth during E3, I couldn't overclock the new ones. But stay tuned - we'll definitely do that next week! :)

Will you get a handpicked unit that overclocks really well, I wonder? The issue with the R1 was that not all units were overclockable despite advertisement, which caused trouble.

I doubt it. Interestingly enough, chips have an inherent level of overclocking ability which varies between processors. Occasionally, I wonder about it when we do chip reviews - whether the product managers cherry picked a good overclocker, but I've managed to get poor OC's out of some. Most of the time, I think it's not nearly the issue a lot of people make it out to be.
