I have an inside contact at dell (a friend)

He emailed me about 15 minutes ago to tell me to hold on my Inspiron 1520 order, as Dell is releasing an entirely new line of laptops tomorrow.

One of the most significant breakthroughs is that they will no longer have hard drives as we know them.

They will be completely flash-drive based. And apparently this means that they will also consume far less power, and run significantly cooler, AND be significantly cheaper. (Im not sure why being flashed based will make them cheaper, but that is what the dell guy told me)

My contact told me that the inspiron 1520 I just ordered - that I might be able to get a system with the same features that I just ordered for $1377, "2 times faster with all the other features for about $700"

(The text in quotes are from my dell contact)

So Im sort of wondering if I bought my inspiron 1520 a few days too early.

Well if that's true then consider me interested about tomorrow. Hopefully this will include the UK...

It's the "Vostro" line, which is basically the Inspirons, but completely painted black. I'm sure there will be some new options, and maybe one of those options will be an SSD (flash drive).

Yeah, that date for the Vostro business release sounds right.
And I could see them being a $100-$200 cheaper than the 1520's but I wouldn't imagine it being hugely better.

And yeah, for the flash hard disk, they're already offering them on the XPS M1330, but they're wicked expensive, +$600 for only 32GB.

I hope miracles happen tomorrow too, but I'm not going to expect it.

My plan is to buy a D830, 1520, or Vostro on Wed. (so that if the thurs sales are better than the current good deals, i can call and push for them).

I dont see anything in those models that suggest they will be able to match the Inspirons 8600m-gt. And if they are business laptops, I doubt they will.

I think my "friend" misled me a bit!

It's most likey the Vostro line that Dell is releasing tomorrow (and possibly a new XPS). But the Vostro line is suppose to be exatly the same as the new Inspiron line, but all black and only available on the business sites.

There is no way that you will get a flash-based drive for cheaper than a traditional hard drive. Flash base drives sell for nearly $500 more than a traditional HDD.

*EDIT: Wow, you other guys posted fast! Sorry for the repeat of info.

Your "friend" blew things WAY out of proportion.

Solid state drives have been in the Latitude line for a little while now. They are incredibly expensive and "do not replace hard drives as we know them".

The Vostro line is the Inspiron for business.

Yeah. I thought I had some sort of scoop, but apparently he was just a little too glowing in his leaked info.

I still think they might feature a SDD drive to put the OS on, which would account for his "2X faster" claim.

From what i read before, the SSD doesn't really have the 2x speed claim... i forgot where i read it, but using HD tune, they found out the reading time is faster but the writing time is still the same. And something about the cache that normal HDD have (i cant remember). I ll post it here if i found what i read before.. Dun have time now...

I did a quick comparison with the Canadian ad, comparing the $1149 Canadian (or about $1050 US) Vostro 1500 with a similarly configured 1520. The 1520 cost $1093 USD, but that's not using the $350 coupon for computers over $1400. So a person can currently get a 1520 for $1050 ($1400-$350) which is much better than the Canadian Vostro for the price.

I hope the US Vostros are cheaper than the 1520's, but I don't expect a big difference.

Looks like the only difference will be aesthetic :(

Im told that the new line being announced tomorrow will be scalable/upgradeable as well, that upgrading components like video cards will be very easy, as compared to the current models.

If that is true, thats something significant to think about.

Ijust configured a vostro system as close to the inspiron system I ordered the other day.

Problem 1: Only Home Basic, or vista business.. no home premium available.
Problem 2: Only 5400 rpm drive, no 7200 drive
    Problem 3: No 2-year warranty/accidental damage protection option (only 1 or 3)

And the total price for the system as is (before any coupons) was only $79 less.

I guess the people who said it is just a rebranded inspiron aimed at business were right.

I wish I knew what my dell contact was talking about. maybe they will announce something else tomorrow.

Was your other system priced in Canadian dollars too?
