IDC reported this week some preliminary numbers for the volume level of PC shipments by brand throughout the world for Q3 2007. Shipments were up 15.5% over Q3 2006. HP remains number one in the world for PC shipments, while Dell is number one in the U.S. Notebook shipments of course continue to outpace the growth of desktops.

    U.S. PC sales results for Q3 2007

In the U.S Dell was the number one in terms of total volume of PCs shipped (a PC is defined as a desktop PC, notebook, or x86 server -- handheld computers are not included). HP remains number two in the U.S. and had a solid growth of 17% volume shipped in the U.S. over Q3 2006. Apple has now propelled to #3 in the U.S. for volume of computers shipped.

Top 5 Vendors, United States PC Shipments, Third Quarter 2007 (Units Shipments are in thousands)

Rank Vendor 3Q07 Shipments Market Share 3Q06 Shipments Market Share 3Q07/3Q06 Growth
    1 Dell 5,010 28.0% 5,260 30.9% -4.8%
    2 HP 4,346 24.3% 3,718 21.8% 16.9%
    3 Apple 1,127 6.3% 973 5.7% 15.9%
    4 Toshiba 940 5.2% 805 4.7% 16.7%
    5 Gateway 865 4.8% 1,009 5.9% -14.2%

    Others 5,633 31.4% 5,272 30.9% 6.9%

    All Vendors 17,922 100.0% 17,037 100.0% 5.2%

Although Acer is not currently in the top 5 for U.S. share of PC sales, with their acquisition of Gateway that will obviously change in the future.

Worldwide PC sales results for Q3 2007

Japan had flat growth of PC shipments over Q3 2006. Interestingly NEC is the number one PC vendor in that country, though it's hard to find an NEC notebook anywhere outside of Japan.

Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) saw large growth in the number of notebooks shipped for Q3 2007. Acer has its core market in this region and that company continued to strengthen its position by increasing sales 60% in the EMEA over Q3 2006.

Asia (not including Japan) is the realm of Lenovo in terms of PC sales. Lenovo was the clear #1 in this region, but HP and Acer are catching up on the Chinese based company. Lenovo was able to grow sales 23% worldwide over Q3 2006.

Top 5 Vendors, Worldwide PC Shipments, Third Quarter 2007 (Units Shipments are in thousands)

Rank Vendor 3Q07 Shipments Market Share 3Q06 Shipments Market Share 3Q07/3Q06 Growth
    1 HP 13,094 19.6% 9,848 17.0% 33.0%
    2 Dell 10,180 15.2% 9,807 16.9% 3.8%
    3 Lenovo 5,502 8.2% 4,476 7.7% 22.9%
    4 Acer 5,436 8.1% 3,415 5.9% 59.2%
    5 Toshiba 2,925 4.4% 2,494 4.3% 17.3%

    Others 29,713 44.4% 27,859 48.1% 6.7%

    All Vendors 66,850 100.0% 57,899 100.0% 15.5%

According to IDC, shipments of PCs should continue to have strong growth going into the end of the year. The only fly in the ointment is component shortages for things like batteries and screens that could force prices higher, but this will likely affect small PC vendors more than the larger companies.

I wonder if Dell can manage to hold onto that top spot...or if HP will take over by next year...both companies have done some great work in the past year.

Haha, yes, yes, they still have their issues. But still, the XPS M1330 is not bad, and certainly not Dell-like at all. The fact that they pulled it off is pretty amazing.

I like HP more though ;).

Considering the fact that half of the M1330s were shipping with incorrect parts, missing parts, or without BIOS', Dell hasn't done much.

Design may have changed, but it makes little different in the computer won't even turn on.

I wonder if Dell can manage to hold onto that top spot...or if HP will take over by next year...both companies have done some great work in the past year.

Considering that Dell's market share continues to crumble both in the US and worldwide markets, while HP's continues to increase, it could be quite possible that in two to three quarters we'll see HP gain the top spot in US PC shipments.

Not a bad prediction...HP certainly has hit more rights than wrongs lately.

Dell did shrink 4.8% compared to Q3 2006, but they're actually recovering a bit from the really bad time they had at the beginning of the year. I get the feeling they're selling a lot of their new Inspirons (even if they have been delayed). They're advertising all over the place here in the U.S., so you know that's got to help them sell more eventually.

HP is already in the top spot.

Lenovo seems to be the big up-and-comer... I suppose they'll probably continue to gain on HP and Dell. Still, HP and Dell have quite a sizeable lead over the others.

Its actually quite ironic how many new switchers over at the Apple forum actually planned to get a Dell...but couldn't afford to wait for it to ship, and just got a MBP instead :D.

Dell's delay actually has helped Apple's sales.

I meant U.S. sales...where Dell is still on top.

That is correct, I live in Canada.

But I was meaning Dell in US anyways, as obviously the charts showed that HP topped worldwide, but Dell is still on top in US.

Well I guess Canada's chart would probably be much closer to the US's chart... but IMO the overall "top spot" is the one that rules THE WORLD! :p

Haha, yes the worldwide chart is the most important one. And yes, Canada's chart should probably be pretty close to America's as well (although Acer has a larger presence here than Gateway, if you ask me).

China looks likely to be the biggest growth area over the next decade... and it looks like Lenovo is the one to beat over there.

That's a good point... pretty soon, Dell's manufacturing troubles will probably be over... and that may help Dell's numbers a bit.

I wonder if Acer can actually advance to the top three...

Considering that there is almost no problems with the new gemstone line...

Well Acer just bought Gateway so that should be a little boost for them... but I think Lenovo will be hard for them to beat in the long run.

For what it's worth, I just noticed that according to these charts, about half of Dell's global sales are in the U.S., while about a third of HP's and Toshiba's sales are in the U.S.
