I'm also deciding between the F8sv and the M1530, but I"m leaning more and more towards the M1530, because it has a 8600GT that has GDDR3 memory, higher res screen with LED backlit screen (hopefully?), and the design is nice. Even though 14" would be more portable I'd rather have the GDDR3 8600GT...But really the way I see it is that its a better look G1s (IMO).

I've just ordered my M1530 after very long consideration... comparing with Inspiron 1520. Mainly because 1520 allow me to select a 1680x1050 screen but 1530 does not. Even after spec to spec match, 1520 is still CHEAPER with a 1680x1050 screen.

Eventually I have to suppress my desire of a higher resolution screen over a lighter and slimmer M1530. Still hope I get to change my order before my unit is delivered in 4-5 weeks time, perhaps by then Dell will offer a better screen?

Sad to say M1530 does not have a choice of a LED backlit screen worldwide at this moment. I have checked sites from US, UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Well, the F8Sv will be more portable, will have a higher resolution screen, and be cheaper. It doesn't have GDDR3 vram, and doesn't have the option of a 9 cell battery, but for me, as long as I can get 2.5-3 hours out of it, its sufficient, and I hate the 9 cell batteries that stick out the bottom, as the on in this does. As far as gaming goes, I think that an 8600GT is pretty damn competent, regardless of what type of VRAM it has.

Ok, I've tried to avoid being one of those people begging for help, but I'm totally OCDing about this so here goes. I purchased a Qosmio F40. Specs below. I got it, and within 2 hours it broke (the tech told me, astonishingly, “you should have checked with us before removing the trial software we included.”) Anyway, they’ve since admitted the computer has a hardware problem and have offered to exchange it. I have until tomorrow to decide though if I just want to cancel the order flat out and buy the Dell XPS 1530 (or wait and get it with the better screen we all say is coming). Thoughts?

If you are happy with the Qosmio(which has the same res as the M1530) you should get it replaced and ask for some compensation for having to deal with all this trouble. I personally consider Qosmio's laptops to be of a higher quality then even the dell XPS's...

It really depends on how you feel about it though.

The Good, The Bad & the Ugly : Not in that order!

The Ugly - My acct210 test I just wrote 3 hours of pure puking.
The Bad - No m1530 today...
The Good - my m1530 arrives "anytime in the day tomorrow" - Will have gears of war by then too!

So that means camping out listening to some music *quietly* so i can hear the doorbell.

Sorry folks! I was stoked writing my test too as i thought i would have a m1530 waiting for me @ the post office!

I actually thought the Qosimo was a pretty tight notebook. Its a lot bulkier than the M1530 though, and the quality is probably not quite as good. Personally, I'd still stick with it, since the multimedia features are great, the speakers are excellent, the screen probably will be better, and its a lot more unique than the Dell. I have thus far, never seen a Qosimo of any kind outside of a retail store (BB, CC, and CompUSA), whereas I anticipate the Dell will be a very popular notebook. That sort of thing may not matter to you though.

Its capable of playing 720p, but the screen is not high enough resolution to show 1080p video.

The 250GB hard drive is a 5400RPM unit.

In terms of wireless cards, both are about the same, I'd go with the 3945 since its cheaper and will serve exactly the same purpose. The 4965 adds Wireless-N functionality, which won't be useful until the 802.11n standard starts to be widely used, which will not be for a long time, since n has not actually been completely certified yet (I think, anyways - I have not come across an N network thus far), and besides, 802.11n is backwards compatible with 802.11g, so its all fine.

And please, do not double post - thats what the edit button is for.

If you game get the 8600 Video card it is tonnes faster for just 100 dollars.
2GB ram is just fine. You can upgrade the ram for more than 1/2 the cost later.

Dell reccomends that hard drive because it makes them the most profit.
THe 7200RPM HDD is a faster hard drive. Unless you need to space go with the 120GB 7200RPM

The laptop is capable of HDMI out for high quality, The Screen is not, you will have to wait until next year to get high quality screen on the m1530. - you can get blue ray burner/player if you want to waste cash, or just get a ps3 as it plays blueray.

Matte is less reflective but less Vibrant - Gloss is more reflective but blacks are blacker & colors are more vibrant. I do not think u have a choice in the matter right now.

The Stock wireless card is fine.

If you want to use this thing portably without power get the 9cell battery. it adds a bit of weight & raises the back up a bit but overall its a great upgrade for cheap.

Will do right when it gets to my door, unpacking @ all!
Duno what time it will be coming tho in the day but its coming tomorrow for sure!

You will have to take my word on screen brightness when i give my review on it, I know how exposure & cameras can effect it but I will try and get a good shot of screen.

Woot woot ... mine is coming tomorrow before 5 as promised by Dell ... hope all you guys there who got the unit are happy with yours ... mine comes with the N card as i got a bit cheaper then the posted price on the page (so what the heck!) ... the down side is the screen but i reckon it's still bright just that resolution is a bit low for such a premium notebook but what the heck! overall the system is a beauty.

Hope you guys that bought ur XPS M1530 are happy with your unit, i can't wait for mine to come!

    Hey everyone!!

I'm a little confused. If one buys the this system with 4GB of memory it is a five hundred dollar option. I was looking in the accessories section and found 2GB modules for 93 dollars. So if I buy the system with the standard 1GB module I will have a total savings of 500 dollars, then say I buy the two 2GB modules separately and install them myself for the 186 dollars, that is a net savings of 314 dollars.

    Do I make sense here??!!

Please, someone tell me why anyone would buy it pre-loaded with the 4GB and not just buy it with 1GB and buy the two 2GB modules separately??

    Help me out.

    Thanks

Yes, you would save that money. You're not crazy. The only thing is, you could find 2 x 2 GB ram modules cheaper at Newegg or other places even. That is why most posters would recommend for you to get the minimum amount of RAM and to upgrade it yourself. The only advantage of paying Dell to do it is convenience.

because they dont know any better & you get warrenty on them

I myself should have got the 1GB modules & then went and bought my own 2GB modules.

It is very easy to install ram on a notebook so upgrade yourself if you want to save some money for extra performance you put in yourself.

    memoryexpress.com has 2GB 667MHZ sticks for 54 bucks

Vivek, the f8sv is not going to be "more portable", dont think because its a 14" laptop its a lot smaller then this 15.4"
    From Dell.com:
Weight: Starting at 5.78 lbs (2.62 kg) W/6 cell Batt
    Width: 14.06" (357 mm)
    Height: 0.93" - 1.38" (23.7 mm - 35.1 mm wedge)
    Depth: 10.34" (263 mm)

    From Asustek.com
    Weight: 2.59kg(with 6-Cell Battery)
    Width: 13.38" (34.0cm )
    Height: 1.46" (3.72cm)
    Depth: 9.6" (24.4cm)

About the 4300's scores could you plug that laptop up to a 22" wide screen monitor and do some real res. tests. maybe to show what it will be like when dell releases the new 1440x900/higher res screens.

    Thanks

You have to keep in mind that Dell is always pretty optimistic when it comes to their weight stats. The 1530 actually weighs around 6 lbs with the 6-cell :p

Also we know what the GDDR3 8600 GT is capable of at higher resolutions, as it's in numerous other laptops which can run 1280x1024. It will score around 3700ish.

I dont know if its been posted here yet, but in this review http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-xps-m1530-intel/4505-3121_7-32778979.html, they say they got a M1530 with the 1440x900 screen. So it shouldnt be too long now.

hey guys, could anyone of you post BIOS screen shots of the M1530 or at least M1330? I'm really curious what options are there to be found. I was really disappointed with my FSC Amilo Xi 1554 BIOS features. Since I'm thinking of buying the M1530 i might as well know from the start :)

    thanks a lot!
