If you notebook come with 2MP camera, then no LED. If only 0.3MP(VGA), then the screen will come with LED.

P/S Based on Asia specification :)

So is the lid on the one with the LED display thinner or the same size as the one with the regular display? I wouldn't think dell would have two different bodies for each laptop.

From what I can tell they have the same bodies, but the LED screens are just thinner. So when you close it down it make the whole laptop a little thinner.

Because it states that it is Slim & Light, it should be the LED display.

Thanks much. That puts to rest any doubts I may have regarding the glossy screen. It it was available in matte, I would have already ordered. As it is, I'll look at the Latitude D630, I suppose...

Too bad--I was looking forward to this notebook since Engadget broke the story awhile back.

i used a new latitude d830 today..the screen was bloody awful! spent 15 minutes trying to get it reproduce colours anywhere near to what my desktop monitor looked like...and failed miserably. The d630 is just as bad.

The brightness is fine but all i can say is what was distinctly green on my desktop was a dull grey/green on the D830.

I would honestly give the glossy screens a chance that are much nicer to work with.

Cancel your order, and reorder using the EPP discount? The Dell recommended for University discounts are a lot better though ($650 off).

How do you get to the Dell Recommended for University discounts? I only know how to get the 10-3% EPP discount and 12% University discount. Is that what you are referring too?

I think I'm gonna go for the 32GB SSD. If I find I really can't deal with that little space I can always pick up one of those 32GB Transcend Expresscard SSD's... It'd be expensive but... With that and an 8GB sd card thats a whole 72GB of high performance flash storage.

Then the only question would be where to store that little remote.

I've outlined how to get the discount there. You're not the only person to ask ;)

I don't think it does...Neither of the two sides has it, so probably not. Not many people still use a 56k modem, I think.

Thank you for the respond. I am fairly new to NBR. I been looking for a new laptop and am very excited about the M1330, I have read every post in this thread and check for new ones often. Didn't notice you posted about the discount in another thread.

    Thanks again!!!

The website does not seem to say DL anywhere. But it would not surprise me if it was a single layer drive. You have to remember they are trying to make this a ultra-portable. So you are going to lose some stuff like a modem, and maybe dual layer.

I actually just bought a modem for my desktop so that I can fax people. That's pretty much the only use for most power users these days.

How does the fingerprint scanner work in practice. Some other manufacturers make a big deal of a TPM module. (Some Vaio SZ's have it and some don't). Is it needed for some functionality like using the fingerprint to log in to web sites? or for maximum security?
Is the Dell lacking in that department?

(I am hoping I will be able to use the fingerprint scanner for web logins using Firefox)

Which wifi option do you guys suggest?

    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card [subtract $22.50]

    Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card [subtract $22.50]

    Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini-Card [subtract $22.50]

    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card [Included in Price]

    Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card add $0.00

I am guessing the Intel-Gen Wireless is the best.

Man I am going nuts already and it's only been one day waiting for my lappy!

Is it normal to have to wait 30 days before shipment when new model laptops are released? I bought a 19in monitor for my folks at the same time and even that is back ordered until August 1st.

Dell needs to get bigger warehouses or something. :p I know they build these as they are ordered but they need something. :)

It's a DVD writer for sure, but does it have dual layer (DL) support? When my brother told me the Dell rep told him it doesn't support DL, I was shocked. That alone is a deal breaker. Who wants a new system with a DVD burner without dual layer support?

I wonder what the PSU is like. I have been rather impressed with the 65W one that came with my D610 - I think because of the rounded shape it has lasted a long time and so far no internal wirebreaks despite a very great deal of use... but it would be nice if the XPS M1330 had a smaller PSU.

I don't exactly know how Dell works. The student configuration that is offered offers only the 8400GS video option, no option to bump it down to the X3100. Now, it's a great deal either way, but does anyone think if I talked to a Dell sales rep they would be able to change the configuration? I don't even care all that much about lowering the price, I'd just rather have the integrated card (there's a first time for everything) heat/noise and power consumption are far more important to me than 3D performance for this.

I noticed you are using British Pounds? So I would not get us Americans too excited if that is the case. Because when you convert that to dollars your system costs $3,615.30 USD. So I think Dell might have more room to play around with price with that kind of exchange rate.

I spec'd a similar system in the US store right now it came out to $3,701 USD so you still got a deal.

Personally though, I never go for the top end CPU because you always pay a premium for a few hundred MHz. And 4GB of RAM is way over priced these days. The only thing I would want 4GB of RAM for is running Linux with Windows in a virtual window. Then I can give both 2GB's of ram. :p

Anyway, sweet system. And I bet us yanks can haggle a little on the phones too. Worth a shot.

Search ebay in the uk and you'll find its not im afraid. Ecomputers have an even better config than yours for £1299. I bought my M1210 from them, its like buying it from Dell, Dell deal with everything once youve got it.

Not sure if im allowed to link to it but HERE That is crazy!!!

It might be worth looking for a bookbag that is 0.22" wider to accommodate the extra girth of the Dell.

From the video, it looks like it has the same problem as the macbook pro of the screen not being able to bend back far enough for you to comfortably look at it while it's on your lap. The angle created by the 9 cell battery would make this worse. Can anyone comment on this?

I was just configuring a new system to see the new estimates ship date (8/13/07 btw) and I decided to check out the DVD drive.

If you click on the "Help me choose" link you will taken to a help page. If you then click on "Compare Side-by-Side" you will see that "DVD +/-RW" (which is the code used for the M1330 drive) has the following specs:

    Read: 8x (DVD) 24x (CD)
    Write: 8x (DVD) 24x (CD-R) 4x (DVD+/-R DL)
    Re-Write: 8x (DVD+RW) 6x (DVD-RW) 10x (CD-RW)
Media Data Capacity: 8.5GB (double layer DVD) 4.7GB (single layer DVD) 700MB (CD)

So unless dell is using a different drive than their standard "DVD +/-RW" drive then I would say it's pretty certain that it has Dual Layer write capabilities.
