**upgrading ram to 4GB on my own (already have the sticks). and saved $426 off retail because of the dell care plus (164) and being a student (261). if i ordered a inspiron and not a xps, i would of been able to save an additional $200 via a coupon for being a student -
So is the lid on the one with the LED display thinner or the same size as the one with the regular display? I wouldn't think dell would have two different bodies for each laptop.
-
-
Because it states that it is Slim & Light, it should be the LED display.
-
also the fact that the screen option also states the camera is a 0.3MP -
SPDIF ? Does the Dell XPS M1330 have optical SPDIF out integrated in the headphone jack?
-
In fact, Engadget has a good pic if the regular screen. Look how thick it is compared to the one that Notebookreview has.

Too bad--I was looking forward to this notebook since Engadget broke the story awhile back.

i used a new latitude d830 today..the screen was bloody awful! spent 15 minutes trying to get it reproduce colours anywhere near to what my desktop monitor looked like...and failed miserably. The d630 is just as bad.
The brightness is fine but all i can say is what was distinctly green on my desktop was a dull grey/green on the D830.
I would honestly give the glossy screens a chance that are much nicer to work with. -
Wow. 212 replies to this thread. This is the Paris Hilton of laptops.
-
Does anybody know if I can apply the 12% student discount after I have already ordered? I've been reading through this thread and saw all these folks that have gotten a 12% student discount, and I'm like, dam, how'd I miss that...
-
Why not cancel and then reorder?
-
Cancel your order, and reorder using the EPP discount? The Dell recommended for University discounts are a lot better though ($650 off).
-
Yea, just called Dell and I am canceling and reordering. Thanks!
-

I think I'm gonna go for the 32GB SSD. If I find I really can't deal with that little space I can always pick up one of those 32GB Transcend Expresscard SSD's... It'd be expensive but... With that and an 8GB sd card thats a whole 72GB of high performance flash storage.
Then the only question would be where to store that little remote. -
Just realise this, the M1330 got no internal 56K modem in it? Can anyone confirm this?
-
I've outlined how to get the discount there. You're not the only person to ask
-
-
My brother is chatting to a dell sales rep, and he's telling him the slot loading DVD+/-RW is NOT dual layer. Is this true?
-
-
Thanks again!!! -
8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive for XPSM1330 is what was shipped with my M1330. I assume that's a DVD writer.
-
I actually just bought a modem for my desktop so that I can fax people. That's pretty much the only use for most power users these days. -
How does the fingerprint scanner work in practice. Some other manufacturers make a big deal of a TPM module. (Some Vaio SZ's have it and some don't). Is it needed for some functionality like using the fingerprint to log in to web sites? or for maximum security?
Is the Dell lacking in that department?
(I am hoping I will be able to use the fingerprint scanner for web logins using Firefox) -
Which wifi option do you guys suggest?
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card [subtract $22.50]
Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card [subtract $22.50]
Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini-Card [subtract $22.50]
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card [Included in Price]
Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card add $0.00
I am guessing the Intel-Gen Wireless is the best. -
Man I am going nuts already and it's only been one day waiting for my lappy!
Is it normal to have to wait 30 days before shipment when new model laptops are released? I bought a 19in monitor for my folks at the same time and even that is back ordered until August 1st.
Dell needs to get bigger warehouses or something. I know they build these as they are ordered but they need something. -
-
-
id be more dissapointed there isnt a hd-dvd/bl-ray drive with this hdmi tote'in badboy -
I just ordered one in Singapore, the drive states with dual layer support.
-
-
dELL India also states DL -
I wonder what the PSU is like. I have been rather impressed with the 65W one that came with my D610 - I think because of the rounded shape it has lasted a long time and so far no internal wirebreaks despite a very great deal of use... but it would be nice if the XPS M1330 had a smaller PSU.
-
correction: it states with dual layer write capabilities.

For the configuration with discrete graphics, is Dell using PM965 or GM965 chipset?
-
I would like to know this also. And what socket is the cpu using the Micro-FCPGA socket or the Micro-FCBGA socket? -
I don't exactly know how Dell works. The student configuration that is offered offers only the 8400GS video option, no option to bump it down to the X3100. Now, it's a great deal either way, but does anyone think if I talked to a Dell sales rep they would be able to change the configuration? I don't even care all that much about lowering the price, I'd just rather have the integrated card (there's a first time for everything) heat/noise and power consumption are far more important to me than 3D performance for this.

I still really hate the two strips of white plastic along the lid of dell notebooks... when will they finally stop making machines with them.....

I spec'd a similar system in the US store right now it came out to $3,701 USD so you still got a deal.
Personally though, I never go for the top end CPU because you always pay a premium for a few hundred MHz. And 4GB of RAM is way over priced these days. The only thing I would want 4GB of RAM for is running Linux with Windows in a virtual window. Then I can give both 2GB's of ram.
Anyway, sweet system. And I bet us yanks can haggle a little on the phones too. Worth a shot. -
Not sure if im allowed to link to it but HERE That is crazy!!! -
-
From the video, it looks like it has the same problem as the macbook pro of the screen not being able to bend back far enough for you to comfortably look at it while it's on your lap. The angle created by the 9 cell battery would make this worse. Can anyone comment on this?
-
If you click on the "Help me choose" link you will taken to a help page. If you then click on "Compare Side-by-Side" you will see that "DVD +/-RW" (which is the code used for the M1330 drive) has the following specs:
Read: 8x (DVD) 24x (CD)
Write: 8x (DVD) 24x (CD-R) 4x (DVD+/-R DL)
Re-Write: 8x (DVD+RW) 6x (DVD-RW) 10x (CD-RW)
Media Data Capacity: 8.5GB (double layer DVD) 4.7GB (single layer DVD) 700MB (CD)
So unless dell is using a different drive than their standard "DVD +/-RW" drive then I would say it's pretty certain that it has Dual Layer write capabilities.
