Today walking the show floor as many companies were still building their displays, we found a new concept notebook from Dell. This is a 16” Full HD notebook based on the M1530, with a stunning 1920x1080 resolution. While I wasn’t able to grab too much information from it, I do know that it has an Nvidia 8600m video card. I also managed to take a few screenshots before they realized what I was looking at and ushered me away from the display.
Dell XPS Concept 16-inch screen laptop (view large image)One interesting thing that a Dell rep mentioned to us was that the screen is made by a "new player" in the LCD market that they might be working with in the future. No names were given as to who this manufacturer was, but we'll try and track that information down in the rest of our time here in Vegas.
A shot of the screen, you can see an Nvidia 8600m graphics card is being used and the display resolution is a rather unusual (for a notebook) 1920 x 1080 resolution (view large image)
Take a look into the future (view large image)The concept 16-inch laptop from Dell looks a lot like the Dell XPS M1530 at first glance, but it really is a non-standard 16-inch laptop.

You are a badddd boy kevin...noooo more freebeess....thats what the lady said when she saw you talking pics? hehe nice lappy

The Future is here a 16" Laptop!, I hope the design team got fired for coming up with this, a true a revolution in notebooks.
-
so did they just shove a 16" screen in the m1530 chassis?
-
-
I don;t know but that would look sweet expecially with that resolution, rools:
-
Wow. That's pretty amazing. I never thought about having a 16" screen.

Crimsonman Ex NBR member
Well, 16 inches... i think they should leave that gap alone.
-
XPS M1630 no doubt. I'd get one over the 1530 for the added rez and probably only marginal increase in size and weight.

Albeit the bezel on the "M1630" is not amazingly thin or anything, it still seems (or I am hoping) the trend is going towards larger screens in existing or relatively smaller chassis. Hopefully this will continue until one day we will see a screen stretch from edge to edge, without any bezel.
-
Here's the upcoming LCD backlit screen for the XPS 1530 (I wish...)
-
Woot
So Dell is finally taking Samsung's Idea of 16 inch laptop -
-
Interesting find! A 16" model might have some promise.

Is this the same form factor as the 15.6" 16:9 display that was in the news a while back? As far as I remember, HP was planning on using those, with a 1366x768 (720p) resolution. It seems to be the same form factor, except with a 1080p resolution.
I really wish they'd get an aspect ratio and STICK WITH IT. It was 15:9 at the start of the widescreen era, then a couple of years back it became 16:10, now its going to 16:9. Though, I guess its a good idea, since all of the HDTVs are running 16:9 displays, making it easier to run dual displays... -
Iactually like if its jsut 15 and 17 inches. Adding 16inch adds more confusion and a lot of more option and the pute too many simlarities when deciding 4 either a 15 or 16, or a 16 or 17.
-
They could have very easily made the bezel smaller. Its one of the design elements that still dont sit well with me with my M1330. There is 1/2 inch bezel on each side. They could have shoehorned in a 14.1inch sreen.
My M1330's footprint is just as large as my old 14.1" 630m that it replaced. -
Nice resolution, although not really anything unheard of, since there are plenty of WUXGA 15.4" displays. Do make the touchpad larger though Dell? I mean it was barely enough for a 13.3" chassis, but it's like the same one was used for the 15.4" and now on this prototype 16".
-
Nice that you were able to sneak some photos before they noticed
Yea I don't think it's unusual to see a laptop with a WUXGA resolution screen. Plenty of 17'' laptops have it, and some 15.4'' ones as well e.g. T61p.
I like the fact that the notebook chasis seems to be aluminimun. I am not sure if this is the case for the M1530 but it certainly makes the notebook look more sturdy and less cheap. -
I don't know about everyone else but at first glance I thought it was a Macbook Pro. Looks as thought they copied it's design then threw in that black area so people wouldn't directly accuse them of doing such.
As it is in the notebook world.... 16" is only less than an inch more than the standard 15.4" notebook. Whats there to get so worked up about? -
But what about me? The customer whose looking for a 14.755556" screen notebook? where is the love!
-
-
Very cool! Perhaps this could turn into a trend where 16:9 screens begin to replace the 16:10 screens, just like how the 16:10 screen did the same to 4:3 screens. Then again, 16:9 screens don't offer much vertical space, so only time will tell how successful 16:9 notebooks will be...
-
Am i right in assuming this will be on the same chassis as the 1530, ie, increased screen size for no gain in chassis size or weight. if thats the case then am all for it. If the size of the notebook will increase too then i don't see the point.
16inch laptops have been talked about for a while now, i believe a few other manufacturers announced it saying it was due to new LCD manufacturing processes being more efficient at producing 16' screens rather than 15.4 -
Also remember that the wider the screen the smaller it is if you keep the same diagonal, so the 16" screen is really not much larger than the 15.4" ones
-
I would be more inmpressed with 14'' in 1330 with 8600GT than this machine!
-
Wasn't the original thinking behind the 16:10 screens that you could view 16:9 content and have a little bit of space left over for controls and such?
Personally I think laptops should be 11 [ultraportable], 13.3 [mainstream thin n light] and 16 [multimedia] inches. Get rid of everything else.
This of course assumes LEDs and super-thin/no bezels so you can have decent resolutions and viewable area on each size. SSDs on the 11s, integrated graphics on the 13s, and discrete graphics and blu-ray on the 16s -
-
No number pads . I thought they would've put a number pad. There shouldn't be not much increase if they just add 0.6" only for the screen.
-
That's a good thing, more new products from Dell, means more products from other competitors. Hopefully this will put the HP design teams and others back to work
-
-
16" screen in a 15" form factor is not a bad idea at all , but is that all DELL can think of ?
When does the 18" model coming out ? -
I just ordered my 1530 last night.
-
It's great!
But only a 8600M for that resolution?
They should have put a 8800M in there -
Dell Please make a M1430 and you have the whole set in the XPS range. -
-
Come on, don't tell me it's the Aluminum. The Dell's don't look anything like the MBP's.
Does this...
...look like this?
The MBP is prettier [there, see? No need to be mad, fanboys], but I don't think Dell is copying anything. It's like saying all black laptops are ThinkPad copycats.
Anyway, I'm not really sure how to take this news. Is there really a market for 16" laptops? Ok, so 13" and below are for travelers who treasure mobility over anything else, 14"-15" are for "mainstream" users, who want a balance of power and portability, and of course 17" and above for gamers and power-hungry users who want "desktop replacements"/super powerful laptops. Although this 16" is [from what I see] just the 1530 chassis fitted with a 16" screen, what about other potential 16"? Would 16" be the new mainstream? Not really, more people are even shifting from 15" to 14", now that you can even fit an 8600M GT into a 14" laptop. I guess let's just wait and see. -
If it's just a bigger screen in the same chassis, ok, but what's the point of a bigger chassis size?
-
something different. im really not quite sure where 16'' ought to be.
-
Maybe for some, 16" is more appealing than 15.4". I am one that wants the biggest screens possible balanced with size and weight. I was considering the Asus W2 17" since it was lighter than most.
Look at it the other way since so many want small. Until recently 14.1 was the dominant "smaller" size. As 13.3 became popular this year, no one said, "but it's less than an inch smaller!" -
Because it's more portable. That less than one inch makes it considerably more portable. I'd still go for a 14" because you can cram in higher performance hardware there.
The 16" though... if it's the same size as the 15,4" frame all the better. But in a larger frame? It'll be heavier in a not very larger frame (the screen is wider, but shorter, meaning the increased screen area is not very larger). -
If they only add Nvidia 8700gt to the options list
or 8700gt SLI (devil) -
Sounds cool, in terms of it being 16 inches, but frankly there isn't thattt much difference. They simply could put the same 1920 x 1080 res. on the 15.4. I think that would be cooler actually. But if the are able to fit a much better graphics card on the 16 inch one, maybe because it has a larger size, this becomes a whole different story...Also dell needs to sort out workmanship problems (screens, etc.) before adding more models to their line.
-
lol, when do you reckon this laptop will come out?
... I don't want to delay my M1530 order too much though
