<!-- Generated by XStandard version 1.7.1.0 on 2007-07-10T09:36:51 -->The Dell Vostro line of laptops will be announced tomorrow, but we've already seen these notebooks in the form of the recent Inspiron 1420, 1520, 1720 releases. The Vostro line will be all black and apparently offer a few different options such as the ability to opt out of any trial software (bloatware), Windows XP is available, and possibly have more SSD options.

Dell has kept the glossy screen on these notebooks, but you can also configure them with a regular matte screen. Windows XP will apparently only be offered on the Vostro 1000 and Vostro 1500, you can also configure a cheap Celeron processor on those notebooks.
The Inspiron line of desktops will also be branded as Vostro and available through Dell Biz. The Dell Latitude line of notebooks will remain as the premier offering through the Dell business channel, it's assumed these Vostro notebooks will be cheaper than the Latitudes and targeted more at Small Business buyers.

-
They look like repainted Inspirons but for "business" use only.
-
Only glossy option? That would be disappointing...
-
Not if you've tried the current matte screens..
-
no dedicated cards?

these aren't concrete specs. they are just a sample of what the basic models will have. of course, being dell, you can customize all the notebooks.
-
No comment about the computers, but Vostro has got to be the worst name for a notebook computer in years.
-
-
HUGE props to Dell for going to an all-black design. 10X better looking in every way than their current Latitude line.
That said, if these are black Inspirons with a few more options, then they should have saved their effort. I'm expecting better plastic for the exterior casing and a better keyboard. -
Rebranded Inspirons, sells for more than plain vanilla Inspirons, not very inspiring.
-
These look really nice, finally they have nailed the Inspiron design. It just isn't an Inspiron anymore...
As for the overpriced comment, it really doesn't seem so, since these are prices in Canadian dollars. -
When I first heard that the 1500 would be coming out, it got me angry because it seemed the 1500 would be better than the 1520. Hopefully (I know it's wrong to think this way)....but hopefully the new 1500 doesn't have the 8600M GT option so it would justify the 1520.
-
the prices seem pretty decent considering theyre labeled in canadian dollars on that ad. you'll probably be able to choose from integrated and dedicated graphics with this line. i'm a little bummed cause i only just recently ordered a 1420. ah well, there isn't too much of a difference.
-
Meh, not replacing the Latitude, apparently, just a renaming of the Inspiron for SB purposes. Boo.

according to people who have tested out the new dell keyboards, they are near thinkpad quality. this is a huge leap for dell. i've never really liked their keyboards, but now that they are getting better, i am seriously considering a dell for my next laptop.
-
Well, I personally tried one out and found it marginally better than their old ones. As I reported, there was an awful brushing noise with every key stroke and there was almost no resistence. I also own a Thinkpad and can assure you, unless the one I tried at the kiosk was a fluke, they are still a long ways from Thinkpads.
See what other people say as they get theirs......so far all anybody has written about are the colored lids and the GPU memory type. -
its the "tomorrow" of yesterday, which is when this story was posted
any news yet??????? yet? yet?
now? now? how about now?
cant wait...im actually considering one of these -
-
Canada again, eh?
Anyway, it looks kind of neat in black, from the pictures on the canada site. -
Dell has a Vostro page prepared; however, the link to the notebook configurator does not work. Should be any hour soon tho
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/odg/vostro?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04
i should add that i will be disappointed if this is just a "new color" of the inspirons. If that is the case I will steer CLEAR of the vostro systems and stick w/ a d630 or d830 for my purchase in the next few weeks here -

I'm going to start this by saying that I would never buy a dell, but to get to a configuration comparable to what I would buy, the price really isn't all that good to me. I doubled the price to get to a "usable" laptop. I'm not impressed.

I think, it does not have a fingerprint reader option and a multi-slot card reader.
Do anyone know any information about this...? -
A loaded 15" Vostro for under $1,200 is awesome!! -
Yes, a nod for all black instead of the all silver on the Inspirons.
But...
Where's the HDMI or DVI? Gigabit ethernet? If you're going to drop the docking port, at least add these.
Anyway, these new Dells just don't do it for me. Have to look elsewhere... -
The desktops weren't anything to brag about, but the vostro laptops are certainly cheap though.
-
Not seeing anything listed in the UK yet (typically).
-
For a split second I was thinking "Hey, maybe I shouldn't wait for the new HP 8510p after all."
Sorry Dell, but the Vostro does nothing for me. -

I priced out a Vostro 1500 to be comparable to my Latitude D830 (T7300/2 gig RAM, 80 gig HD, WSXGA+). The Vostro was about $150 cheaper. I'm not sure why a business user would downgrade to a rebranded Inspiron for that minimal savings. The all black look is much better than the old Inspiron's silver and white but again the Latitude styling is equally business appropriate.
Frankly I think Dell would have been better off using the Inspiron 14/15/1720 color schemes for the Vostro and marketed the machine as a "creative class" alternative to the usually understated business laptops. I don't really want a fire engine red business laptop but I imagine there is a niche market for that kind of product. -
I kind of understanding where Dell is going with this Vostro line. It looks like its geared toward people who work from home or have a small business and their pre configured systems for low prices are where its at.
Of course when you start adding on the power options the price goes up and if you load up a Vostro system you will pay and start deciding its not worth it - but that was never the intention of this line.
It all comes down to marketing. I don't know about you guys, but if I pretend to not know anything about computers, and I'm up to my chin in work trying to keep a handle on my small business, looking at the Vostro section of the website sure does sound like its the solution I need at a price that isn't too hard to swallow. -
no hdmi and no DVI SUCKS!
no DOCKING station... no docking station for the inspiron 1520 either...
might get the xps(hdmi),,, but it has a geforce 8400gs not 8600gt
what other laptop has the 8600 or better with hdmi or dvi ?
Asus F3SV-B1 iNSTRUCT -
the vostro seems cheaper than a 1520 with similar configs.
both have 8600gt card. is there some hidden catch or something like different build quality? -
deltafx1942 Notebook Consultant NBR Reviewer
it might be missing some ports, as others have noted. anyways, before anyone actually gets one in their hands, it is hard to tell what the difference is between vostro and the inspiron line, besides the color.
-
I like the fact that you can get it with the Santa Rosa CPU, base RAM and HDD, webcam, WSXGA, Bluetooth, Dell a/g wifi, and 8600GT for under a grand.
Awesomeness, plus it looks better than the Inspirons. -
I configured it with a webcam, 8600GT, Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz 800FSB, DVD Burner, Bluetooth Wireless N for like ~$900 Thats a good deal! Only 512MB's of RAM, but that can be upgraded to 2GB's (aftermarket) for ~$70! So for 1k you can get a very The only thing it is missing is a fingerprint reader. I'm going to wait till they hit Dell Outlet, then maybe I'll grab one!
-
Now I'm questioning my purchase of a D531 for $900, but oh well. 8600GT or 5 hour battery life...=/
-
I ordered the 1700 model today.
I got the Intel® Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB), Genuine Windows Vista Business, 17.0 in UltraSharp WUXGA LCD Display with TrueLife, 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM, 160G 5400RPM SATA hard drive, 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability, 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce 8600M GT, Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card, Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal, Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera, Integrated Sound Blaster® AudigyHD Software Edition, and 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery.
I compared this set up with the exact same specs as an inspiron 1720 and it was about $900 cheaper ($2111 for the vostro). I so glad I waited a couple days before I ordered the inspiron I was planning on getting. Also comes with a number pad on the keyboard, and although I am a student who would use the computer more for video editting and games, it's still a bonus.
I will put my comments up about it once it arrives. I will say that I have been through multiple dell computers and loved everyone so I may be possitively biased towards their computers, but this did seem like a ridiculously good deal -
-
I don't get it.. I mean is too cheap! there's no other 8600GT lappie under $999 ! -
I ordered the 1500 model for roughly 1500,
2.0 dual core, 2 gigs of ram, and a 256 mb GeForce
whats not to like? Is a 2.0 GHz dual processor not going to run Crysis and other high end games??
btw, on their website, if you go for one of the prearranged systems.. it knocks 260 off the price in exchange for putting a crapload of bloatware on your system. -
As far as i can tell a vostro is the same as an inspiron. This is just a name
