I've got the same noise; in this part of laptop there's an HDD, so it's definitely it which makes the noise. My theory is that (hopefully) it's ok, since HDD has a free-fall sensor, which might attribute to this noise somehow. Anyway, any comments are welcome!

By the way, does anybody have any concerns and/or complaints on their SXPS's over some time of use? While still brand new, it's gorgeous but with time, I guess, some weaknesses might pop up. I'd appreciate if anybody could share their experiences with this laptop over a couple of months of use. Thanks!

Had mine for a few months, not a single complaint except it can be a fingerprint magnet. Windex a few times a week and its a non issue (the trick is to keep oils/dirt from building up on the machine).

Do you think choosing the leather accent would change that?

Nope. The leather accent only covers a small strip on the base of the lid, which is nice for looks and gives something to grip when carrying it (without leaving fingerprints). However, most of the fingerprints come on the palmrests/edge of the screen from my experience. The lid is fairly easy to keep clean if you are careful about hand placement.

In April of 2009, I, now a freshman, purchased a laptop for college aka doing homework and playing computer games. I decided to go with a Studio XPS 16 and I spent alot of extra money to get all the possible upgrades. I've owned 2 dell computers before so I did not hesitate to put all my trust and money into this purchase. In total, I spent $1,670.99 on the laptop with all these cool looking upgrades. At the time of purchase, there was only one option for the gfx card that was ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 3670 - 512MB. I now come to discover that there is no way to upgrade the gfx card because it is attached to the motherboard. Now let me tell you, this graphics card is crap. So now I'm stuck with an expensive laptop that cant do the things I want and I cant even upgrade it. Of course, soon after I purchase the laptop, Dell comes out with a new and improved studio xps 16 which is supposedly being praised for its versatility and gaming with two graphics card options for a little more money (of course).I shared my frustration with technical support which then transferred me to customer care. I told them my story and it is all documented with a reference number. I pleaded for anything I could salvage and the lady says they can give me a $100 coupon for my next purchase with Dell...seriously? What is $100 going to help compared to my waste of $1,670.99! In the end, Dell expects me to buy another computer after they sell me an unfinished product in the first place...WOW!!

If the machine with the HD4670 came shortly afterward, you could've returned it and re-purchased the new machine no? I know lots of people did that when the new one came around and they did it again when the Studio XPS got refreshed wit the i7.

You mean if the i7 in the sXPS 1645 is an improvement over C2D in the sXPS 1640? Depends on your usage. For any CPU intensive application (especially multithreaded applications), then yes, there would be a significant advantage.

I agree with the heat issue being the thing that would worry me the most about considering to buy one of these....
