Today's news from Dell shouldn't come as any surprise for notebook gaming enthusiasts. Dell officially announced the availability of dual nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX video cards (2 x 512MB) with nVidia SLI for the XPS M1730 and XPS M1730 World of Warcraft edition notebooks.

Dell claims the XPS M1730 laptop configured with dual GeForce 8800M GTX is capable of producing a 3DMark06 score of up to a 13,500 3DMarks ... a 49 percent improvement over dual nVidia Geforce 8700M GT SLI technology.

In short, this latest dual graphics card option delivers stunning performance even for demanding games like Crysis and BioShock.

While this might sound like bitter news for people who already purchased the XPS M1730, Dell has another surprise in store. Dell will offer a "graphics upgrade program" for customers with existing XPS M1730 and XPS M1730 World of Warcraft edition laptops!

New customers can configure the XPS M1730 with dual 512MB GeForce 8800M GTX cards for an additional $700. Details on the upgrade program will be available soon.

Of course, Dell is not the first notebook manufacturer to offer dual 8800M GTX video cards. Sager was first to the market with the release of the NP9262 with dual 8800M GTX cards last year.

Saw it. 1,000$ upgrade from a single 8700M GT. Quite cheap actually. But only 3,5k points from a standard 8800M? That's poor performance increase.

Unfortunately 2x graphics cards does not equate to 2x performance, generally it's about 50%.

Much better to have 2x the GPU on 1x the graphics card, ala ATI 3870 X2 for the 70% performance increase. :D

Can't wait till that baby hits the mobile market. I'd bet it will beat out SLI options.

Wish they offered the XPS with a single 8800GTX. Even with my company discount, the SLI-8800 GTX configuration is way too expensive for my tastes.

Andrew, I know that and it's a shame, but I was expecting a higher price somehow (considering it's Dell), considering it would cost around 1.1k to upgrade from a single 8700M to 8800M GTX SLI in a Clevo D901C (close to 500 from 8700M to single 8800M, then 695 from a single 8800M to SLI).

Well, it's no surprise, but I am wondering why they would wait so long to do it.

Because in real-life, even though Clevo offered it, it wasn't up until recently that people got the notebooks with the new cards. Maybe they were trying to play it safe. That and the fact that SLI (Clevo world) is available from February.

Whether the performance increase lives up to peoples expectations or not, the numbers are very impressive for a notebook!

    Future proof for $4000?

Nah. I'd rather spend $1500-$2000 today to play today's games. (or $~2700 for HDX's 20.1" Dual lamp 1900x1200 w/8800M GTS.)

Then spend another $1500 tomorrow to play tomorrow's games.

I can't even fathom having the performance of dual 8800m GTX's, and it's cool that they are doing an upgrade program too.

But these kinds of monstrosities are waaaay to expensive for my tastes.

Hey all I been knowing notebookreview.com for awhile and use them for all my research on laptops. I just picked a dell m1730 2 days w/ 3 yr warranty for $1000 on CL. I think IMO that this is a hell of a deal.

Ya, its a bit of a joke. They are only trying to get points with the 55 year old wow crowd.
I remember running WoW decently only my 9800 pro, probably 1/15 of the power of sli'ed 8800m.

But anyway, its great that dell is offering these graphics upgrades. Pity they don't boost performance more. I'm sorta suspicious a higher clocked single 8800 might have been faster (or just a heck of a lot cheaper with similar performance).

I think I'd rather spend 2000 dollars and build a desktop equipped with dual G92 GPU's or a 3870X2 (or two) and absolutely dominate all over that notebook. Then use my change to get something a little more...practical.

Not to rip on the dell at all. It's packing some impressive horsepower.
