Dell today announced the latest addition to its business-class notebook lineup, the Latitude 13. It also announced updates to its Precision M6500 series mobile workstation.

Dell Latitude 13 - Business Class Ultraportable

The Latitude 13 is nearly physically identical to the company's lower-tier Vostro V13 notebook with some important distinctions. The Latitude 13 is focused on system management from an IT perspective. As a Latitude notebook it also has different supporting services than the Vostro line. The Latitude 13 is virtualization-ready and supports Broadcom TruManage technology, which allows IT to create, update, and deploy system images from a secure online location. On the security side the Latitude 13 offers full disk encryption, Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and Computrade software.

The Latitude 13 will have a starting weight of 3.36 pounds and is less than one inch thin. The chassis is designed using alunimum. The notebook is based on the Intel CULV platform; three CPUs will be offered, starting with a Celeron 743 and moving up to a Core 2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz/800MHz FSB/3MB L2) at the high end.
The Latitude 13 will be available for order in the coming weeks; its starting price point will be less than $1,000.

Dell Precision M6500 Mobile Workstation - Core i5, USB 3.0 Updates

Dell today announced updates to its Precision M6500 mobile workstation. It is now available with Intel Core i5 and i7 dual-core processors; previously it had only been available with the quad-core i7 processors. The M6500 is also being updated with USB 3.0, however it will only be available on the quad-core i7-equipped models.

Dell is also adding a 64GB SSD which fits in the system's mini-PCIe slot. This idea is to use the 64GB SSD for the operating system and programs while using the system's two hard drive bays to store data. Drives can easily be swapped in and out without affecting the operating system.

Additional upgrades to the M6500 include Gobi 2 support (GSM/CDMA in one card) and a higher-resolution 3.0MP camera (from 2.0MP). The dual-core i5/i7 versions of the Precision M6500 will be available for order in the coming weeks. The Precision M6500 with the Core i7 quad-core processor currently starts at $2,749.

Though in theory a great idea, I question the miniPCIe random R/W performance as the main OS/programs drive...

So I hope its safe to say that mine will come with at least ubs 3.0 since its not scheduled to ship till the 23rd

What is the purpose of a 3.0 MP webcam?

 

The M6500 is a dreamy workstation. Dell beat Clevo to the Quadro 3800M, but the standard M7740 is nearly as good, for $700 less? Craziness. I like how there's a factory option for a Samsung mini-PCIe SSD with OS. Combine that with twin 500GB drives in RAID 1, and you're treated to high capacity, as well as data security, without sacrificing application speed. USB 3.0 is an early bonus, but it's for a notebook that should stand the test of time. $$$ though...

 

I was really hoping the Latitude 13 would fix my problems with the Vostro V13; like adding HDMI/DisplayPort, higher screen resolution, better battery life etc. Maybe it will by the time it starts shipping though.
