Today Dell announced the Inspiron R series of entry-level laptops. The Inspiron brand is Dell's most affordable and most popular line. Today's refresh brings three new models with four new colors to the lineup, as well as Adamo-inspired design choices, like the redesigned screen hinges.

What? Not to be rude, but I thought these were announced a month ago.

What's kind of funny is that there's this pseudo-brished-metal look on the laptop, but it's just plastic with that pattern on it lol :p

Announced and released a month ago in parts of Asia and Austraila yes, but everywhere else no. Hence the announcement that they can finally be configured in the US and Canada. (among other places) These systems are noticible because before they debuted here, we had got a very short refresh of the Inspiron lineup in January. Oddly, the models sold before that refresh are still available today....

I actually like this, its like the patterns that HP used/uses in that it's embedded in the plastic. If it keeps the cost low (which is the ultimate goal with this line) then I don't see the problem. I AM disappointed with Dell's continued use of "Bundling and Packages" however, along with the continued lack of high resolution screen options.

It seems that one has to automatically choose a business machine if they want any semblance of high resolution...sad really. :(

So what is the difference between Dell Inspiron 1564 and Dell Inspiron 15r?

Didn't they refresh the inspiron line back in January by introducing the new look (pseudo-brished-metal look) and they had the new i3 processors. If yes, then why did they introduce 15r??

The inspiron 1564 is not even available on dell.com anymore, it's replace with 15r.

What's even more funny is that 1564 had 'side-hinges' like the studio and xps (I think), but 15r doesn't have them.

I bought 1564, so please if someone knows what are the differences, please clarify.

Correct, you've gotten the January refresh systems that debuted with Core i processors. The R line carries the design language used on the Dell Mini line of netbooks, with additional faux brushed metal used on the lid, unlike your 1564.

I got to play with a new 15 R at Wal-Mart a few days ago. I liked it but found that the screen resolution was too low for my tastes, and that the mouse button's felt a tad cheap. All in all it was pretty solid though. :)

So what about the side design? The hinges? I mean 1564 looks thinner and there are side hinges (I don't know whether that is the correct term), while 15r doesn't have them.

I chatted with Dell and asked them too and they said that "15r has all the same features exept some good colors & premium brushed finish"

and "it has the option for Tomato Red & Peacock Blue (1564 dint have it), premium brushed finish does not get the finger prints on your laptop".

15r looks like the Inspiron 15 that came out a year or two ago ...

The Inspiron 15R looks very similar to my younger brother's 1545, except slightly thinner and more smoothed on the corners.

Nope, but you do have to step up to the Studio range. If they offer high-res in the Inspiron then what's the point of the Studio - is maybe their thinking.
