The new Dell Inspiron 6000 and Dell Inspiron 9300 will be hitting the virtual shelves of Dell next week. These new notebooks will feature the latest Intel Pentium M processor, dubbed "Alviso", in addition to the new Express Card slot and PCI Express compatible graphics cards.
Intel will be announcing its new Alviso Pentium M chip on January 19 and Dell will be one of the manufacturers lining up with Intel to announce new notebooks that feature this chip. Given the fact theInspiron 9200 and Inspiron 8600are still on sale (as of 1/12/2005), you might want to wait a week before purchasing either laptop to see if the new i6000 and i9300 offerings and their prices are more appealing to you.
Dell Inspiron 6000
The Inspiron 6000 appears that it may be a replacement for the current Inspiron 8600 as it has a 15.4" screen. The i6000 will feature the latest Intel Pentium M chipset, a PCI-Express compatible 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X300 card (PCI-Express allows for easy graphics card upgrades in the future), the new Express Card slot, and also an 8-in 1 memory card reader. The new Alviso chip to be featured in the Inspiron 6000 has a faster Front Side Bus speed(533MHz) which will give the processor speed a boost via faster data transfer. Below is a spec sheet found on the Dell Sweden site recently:
Dell Inspiron 9300
The Inspiron 9300 will be the update to the currently selling Inspiron 9200 desktop replacement style notebook from Dell. The 9300 will feature the new Alviso Pentium M chip and will come with a 256MBNvidia PCI-Express compatible graphics card (PCI-Express allows foreasy upgrades down the road). Wow, the Inspiron 6000 is ~.4 lbs lighter than the Inspiron 8600. Not bad considering the much better specs, but I'm sure the casing has something to do with it. Still, very nice.

I just canceled my order on www.myaopen.com
that 6000 is just too sweet! i am gonna go for it!!!

ok, the Dell home site has a one day only (Tues. 1/12) 100.00 off most notebooks, which can be combined with the existing rebate and coupons offers.
so, my question is, does anyone have an opinion on whether this is as good as it is going to get, in light of the news that the new 6000 is coming soon to replace the 8600. I was intending to buy the 8600 and I am concerned that the price might drop, or that they will no longer sell them once the 6000 comes out. Certainly the 6000 sounds great, but for my needs, i would be quite happy with the 8600 and saving the extra money. What should i do? -
How sure are we that these models will be on sale next week as stated by abaxter? AAnyone have it on good authority? As we speak I'm sitting at home waiting for my 9200 to be delivered today. If next week, I'll probably return it. If not til March or April I'll probably just be happy with what I have
-Kevin -
They will be announced next week and likely be available to buy within that week or the week after, but in most cases with Dell new notebooks take a month or so to ship after the actual order is placed.

the unknowns of the new systems:
- change in availability
- change in cost
- change in battery life and thermals
the knowns:
- 533mhz fsb dothans + chipset use about 10% more power, but overal system performs 5-15% better.
- ddrII uses less power
- geforce 6800 go substantially faster than ati mobile 9700 (50-100%)
-
Anyone know of docking station / port replicator support on either the 6000 or 9300?
inevitable -
after some digging around... mobile ati 9700 is an 11 watt max part, the geforce 6800 go is a 35 watt max part. so for those buying based on battery life, the 9200 should have an edge over the 9300.

_Qick Analysis of 8600 vs. new 6000 using Dell site data_
By configuring for checkout both models, we can view the specification sheet. This reveals a few preliminary differences between the two models:
- 6000 ships with an INCREASED WATT/HR BATTERY. the difference is small, (47vs53 for small cap and 72vs80 for large cap).
- disregarding coupons or discounts, the PRICES ARE IDENTICAL with similar configuration (1.6ghz, 256M ram, 30G hd).
- low end 6000 will use intel's 915 integrated solutions instead of gf5200FX go found in 8600.
- high end - information not available from dell yet

Anyone know why they didn't release the 9300 today?
Any ideas on when it will be out?
Thanks! -
Dell seems to have the strategy of adding a little bit at a time. They video card for the 6000 will not be out until February sometime with the 100 GB hard drive coming out in March. Thus with the slow progress of the 6000 I would not be surprised if the 9300 is not released for several months.
-
Who frickin knows? Dell's year end is Jan. 31st, so they could just be milking as many 9200s as possible trying to get rid of their old centrino inventory. PCI express graphics cards I'm sure are another holdup as neither Nvidia or ATI have them in large quantities. Some guy received a brand new 9200 today that had "9300" listed under system specs, which could mean absolutely nothing. I returned my brand new 9200 last week and I'm just as antsy as the next guy and I'm ripe to purchase, but I think if we're all a little patient we shall be rewarded. Amen!! I'm giving it until Feb. 1st to see what's out...and after that..well I may just rant some more LOL [} ]

What i'd really like to know is how long before they start putting out the option for 2.13 Ghz chips with sonoma.
-
Shouldn't be long. Intel shipped a lot of sonoma/alviso inventory to system builders before year's end. The DDR2 probably isn't widely available yet but Samsung has said they are increasing production. Another hold up is probably gonne be the availability of 6800Go and X700/800 mobile GPUs. I have a feeling we'll see a lot more in the next couple of weeks. The Acer 8104 looks great to me and it's not a bad price cuz it's loaded to the gills, but I want a 17 incher so I'm waiting for the mysterious 9300
-Kevin -
What will these new pci-e video cards for notebooks look like? Will they be similar to a PCMCIA card that you can swap out easily? And could they be added to the current Dell 6000 available now with integrated graphics? If any one has links with more information it would be appriciated. I can't seem to find any info on them. Thanks
-
I just talked to Dell's order dept, and they estimate that they will start taking orders for the 9300 "around Feb 24th"
-
Desi, The 6000 is allegedely going to be offered with an ATI X300 PCI-express graphics card somethime in the future. I doubt the current 6000 can be upgraded. There are 3 different versions of the sonoma chipset(915GM, GMS, and PM), only the PM offers PCI-eX16 graphics. The current 6000 uses the new integrated graphics from Intel based on either the GM or GMS version of the chipset so I don't think it can be upgraded.
