Great writeup, looking forward to being able to recommend these around the forums!

I do, however, similar to my post about the 2017 HP Spectre x360 15, think that it would have been useful had you also added a small note about the pentile issue with the advertised 4K Ultra HD 3840x2160 display in the 2016 model (7559), as there's currently no confirmation that this 2017 model isn't doing the same thing, and that has significant bearing on what it means for this laptop to be listed as 4K.

A way of looking at the RG/BW Pentile ‘4K’ display in the 2016 model is that it more or less ‘cheated’ the ability to advertise the 4K resolution, without actually providing the full detail of the resolution. You would see 3840×2160 in your display settings, and the GPU would render every pixel of 3840×2160, but the actual display didn’t have enough RGB components to display all those pixels, so all you got to see was a downsampled version. It was a fair bit worse than the real 4K displays in the Dell XPS 15 4K and Lenovo IdeaPad 700 4K, and IMO the proper cost-cutting alternatives to 4K displays that manufacturers should use are 3K 2880x1620 and QHD+ 3200x1800 displays, not false-4K pentile displays.

Update: Inspiron 7567 4K is true 4K! But the FHD version uses a very low quality TN panel.

The 15.6" version looks very nice for that price. I wonder what the catch is? I suppose they could make selecting the higher end components prohibitively expensive...

Turns out that, judging by reports of the 7566, the catch is that the 1080p models use a very poor quality TN display :(

So much for recommending this everywhere.

EDIT: Adding these links so I can singularly link this one post on multiple sites:
    EDIT2: Display is replacable:
EDIT3: IPS FHD option now available! A config option on certain models in certain regions.

Ha! I didn't notice that, but I knew there was something. Indeed, judging by the descriptions:
    15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
    15.6-inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display
the cheaper model does not claim to be IPS. Sneaky!

To be fair to Dell, all of the OEMs have gotten sneakier. The HP competitor to this (the Omen 15) has an IPS 1080p display, but the UHD one appears to play the downsampling game described a few posts above. Oh well, on with the search...

It's disappointing indeed that the 15.6-inch FHD panel on the Inspiron 7566 does not appear to be IPS. The previous-gen Inspiron 7559 offered IPS. It wasn't a great panel, but it was respectable for its price point.

Dell normally uses WVA (Wide Viewing Angle) in its specifications because IPS is the technology used by one manufacturer but other manufacturers have equivalents. Nonetheless, the absence of any of these letters in the description of a panel is a strong indication of it being low quality and, with price differentials between the bad and good display panels now being relatively small, such panels should no longer be options except on the cheapest of the cheap computers.

Inspiron 7566 confirmed true 4K, and likely the 7567 the same!
